Exactly... it's a bit like a rusty bicycle... the longer you let it sit there, the harder it is to get started again... I'm 31 and single... and work nights and don't get out of the house much... not really creating opportunities here...

Edit: Not sure that really had much to do with what you said, exactly... just parallel maybe...

Plenty of parallels. I didn't even try to date while in college. I was too focused on school. Finished undergrad in 3 1/2 years as a result. Barely had time to sleep during grad school, so dating was out of the question. So once I was done with school it was kind of a moment of....so how do I do this now? Even then I wasn't super focused on it at first as I tried to figure out the "Now what do I do with my life" thing.
Tried online dating for awhile. That was....interesting. I didn't have any horror story experiences but I was definitely underwhelmed.
Trying to figure out what to do next. Bars are NOT my thing, but it seems like that is still what so many people my age do for fun.

At this rate, guess I'll stay single forever and be the crazy book lady who travels all the time.

The common suggestion I hear is: find a hobby... take class... anything to put you in the vicinity of other people with a common interest, even if that interest is trying something new...

Cause that response just created more parallels... my introversion was nurtured early on since my step-dad was in the Navy and Iattended a different school every year from kindergarden to 6th grade... that either makes you good at making friends... or good at being an introvert who reads books all day... I went the latter route... and I focused on classes in college... wasn't a drinker/partyer...

Then I focused on finding a stable job and paying my bills when I graduated, after watching my parents struggle with 4 kids... ended up wasting that computer degree...

Let's go back to talking about happy things... ANDREW has a great marriage :D

I wholeheartedly agree with you Andrew. I got married when I was 20 and my husband was 21. I will say that we were more immature than we thought we were at that age and it wasn't always easy. I'm now 46 and we are still married. I've also been a stay at home parent since our first child was born. It required sacrifice on our part at times to make that possible, but it was important to us that one of us be home with the kids, and I've loved every minute of it.

Shows what YOU know... craiglist removed the personals section in response to the US's Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act of 2017... it's so loosely worded that it leaves websites open to liability in lawsuits if a victim feels they contributed to their pain...

Amazon also just started hiding most erotica and reverse-harems and menage stories as a result:

Just heard about this in another group... lot's of fallout for indie authors especially, who don't have publishing house lawyers to help them when a book is censored unnecessarily...

High five for introvert, bookworm kids. We didn't move at all, but I'm an only child was the only kid on our street growing up. So I read a lot even as a little kid.

Andrew | 653 comments Iain wrote: "The common suggestion I hear is: find a hobby... take class... anything to put you in the vicinity of other people with a common interest, even if that interest is trying something new..."

That is very common advice, and I don't personally think it's the greatest advice. Common interests are good and all, but they're not what makes you you, or makes me me. Values and personality are what do that. While having common interests is fun and can help you fall in love, having compatible personalities and value systems is what keeps you there, IMO. That's why I think getting involved with things that align with your moral compass and value system (church, activist groups, non-profits, etc) is going to yield better relationship results than going to the bar or meeting someone at a baseball game.

Maybe I should write a book or something. If people actually want to read my unsolicited relationship advice, then I should at least try to profit off of it. :)

message 2365: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 765 comments about the dating/introvert thing, I had an interesting message exchange with a GR user the other day. SPOILERS for ending phrase of Ready player one, though it doesn't really tell anything about the story.

David:
It was by Halliday ""As terrifying and painful as reality can be, it's also the only place where you can find true happiness." and then "Don't make the same mistake I did. Don't hide in hear forever".

Just made me think that as soon as the film would finish lots of people would pull their phones out and "disappear" into facebook, instgram etc and go home onto xbox, ps4, PC, VR. Just seems that's the way the world is heading. Technology should help life not become it.

idiffer:
Thanks for your reply. And yeah, I agree with the phrase... sort of. If you find the right ppl it's happier in RL. But the effort of finding those ppl, well, sorry, but I'm not willing to filter through all the assholes and dumbasses that life offers up en masse, all to find that one true friend who you can respect. So for me right now it's the internet all the way. And don't be like "he'll come around when he matures", bc this comes from 29 years of experience and personal circumstances like depression and being weird and different. I'm not saying this is the right way for everyone, I'm saying it's the right way for SOME people and disregarding the internet altogether is smth one should not do.

Anni | 5066 comments I visited a wildlife park (like a zoo but with less exotic animals and huuuuge pens, the park is 80ha/ 8000a wide!) and there are pens you can walk through with deer and wild boar for example. The animals are used to the humans, so you can walk among them, but you have to stay at the paths to let the animals decide wether they like to meet you or not 😂
The moose had a separate enclosure and you couldn't walk in, so no, sadly I didn't play with the moose 😅

I seriously am having reading issues today. First I read "with less exotic animals and huuuuge penises" and then reading further down I read "the animals used to be humans". At least I got a good laugh at it. Might need to make that cat scan appointment sooner than later though.

I was just reading an article this morning about how Amazon was now going to stop allowing rating for "erotic" books, and if something has a sex scene that doesn't just fade to black, it is getting an erotic label. Guess that article hadn't quite left my mind yet.

But seriously, how ridiculous is that? That means most of Ilona Andrews' books, the Kushiel books, Sookie, Fever, basically all the PNR stuff. It's all going to be "erotica" and not given a review? I really hope I'm misunderstanding cuz that makes no sense.

It's probably just more repercussions to the Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 that became a law this month... I was talking about this yesterday... tons of internet companies/websites are being overcautious to avoid liability right now...

Generally, in the US, Congressional Bills do a lot more than their title says...

This Bill fiddles with liability laws in previous communications bills...leaves them wide open to interpretation by unscrupulous people that like to sue everybody they can... makes people nervous and they start over-reacting...

I agree, tho... unless you're writing age-play erotica (where one of the characters pretends to be a child) there shouldn't be any problems... even that shouldn't REALLY be a problem, but it skirts the line in people's minds with the child sex trafficking they're trying to combat...
