I've occasionally thought about a real life rendition of my bitmoji: "bearded man in a hoodie"... but I'm too lazy / photo-phobic... and it took me 3 years to add ANY profile photo... I got awhile still before I need to consider changing it

I deleted my last name as well. I didn’t really realize that it shows up for some reason but oh well 😂

I avoid uploading personal information on such sites... Don't want to gather a bunch of creepy stalkers. :((

Weeeell, I was kinda forced into going into rehad. Manipulated. I don't regret it, but it wasn't really a choice. It was either rehab or live on the street. And while everyone tells me it's hard, for ME it wasn't as hard as for others. But this can turn into a very lengthy explanation.

Group therapy helps in the way socializing helps depressed ppl, which is to say not THAT much. I owe alot to medication.

I didn't really mean to talk this much about it, but I'm not averse to discussing it as long as we don't turn into a pity-party for me (my paranoia again, see).

No, it's not. A member of the Goodreads team already intervened and put a end to the situation. I didn't notice my last name was on GR though... My stalker found me on Facebook 😓

LOL. I don't mind a polite stalker. But mine's not polite at all. Started to PM me insults every hour or so...

And I just don't get ppl who hurl insults in PM, while stalking a girl they're interested in. Or he wasn't interested?

Goodreads has some weird things going on with last names... you can easily have them hidden in your profile options... but then they'll show up in certain situations like direct messages or notifications or friends lists or just the header bar of your profile... whatever causes this isn't very consistent...

message 1863: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 765 comments That's why I tell ppl to keep my first name on the dl. I'm pure stalker-victim material (besides BEING a stalker myself)

If the therapy allows you to see whats been going wrong then you can always find a way around to beat it and be even better than your first unbroken self.

I really don't worry too much about stalkers, lol. So long as they don't find me in real life and cause things to get messy. I have actually had strangers come up to me who know me from social media and it's been cool, but I'm not a ver controversial person.

The social media thing plus publications makes certain anonymity impossible.

message 1869: by Chris (new)

Chris (murphy44) | 710 comments I've never had an online stalker... Maybe it's because I'm a guy. I did however meet my wife on World of Warcraft, so I did the online thing.

Awesome, bro. I met my then-GF on a jap light novel translating site, and I'm a proponent of online hook-ups (though not dating sites). It's very "hip" to shit on internet socialization in some circles, and I respectfully disagree.

I kinda had a stalker once... ran into this dude at the bus stop while car hunting (I think he had some mild mental disability), and he was going on about giving up on women because of a bad girlfriend... had a boyfriend instead now...

It was my own fault, and it resolved itself in a couple weeks time... my friends got a good laugh out of it...

But on a random note spent the whole day training and I’m interested in the work I’ll be on my feet all day but some exceeding never hurt anybody and it will be interesting to see how it goes hell I might even meet some of you guys if you happen to live around Yorkshire which is unlikely

message 1874: by Anni (new)

Anni | 5066 comments That's awesome! I'm always open for new conversations and I think today it isn't unusal to make friends via internet. I for example joined a German group here at Goodreads and we grew real close over the years, we even rented a house last year and visited the book fair together, I really don't want to miss them. I think finding love via internet is possible as well and nothing one should be contemptuous about...

But I don't think you can afford any of these by crazy stalker messages 😂
Also I'm actually wondering if claims like 'Hey you look nice, wanna show me your tits?' ever worked on Goodreads? There have to be a reason people trying this, right?

I used to be in a lot of adult gr book clubs and used to get messages like that. I think they think people who like to read sexual books also want to show strangers their tits? Not sure how you make that leap but since I deleted myself from those groups I haven't had any messages like that since lol.

The insults came after I said I wasn't interested. The guy was asking for private infos so he could contact me ><

I agree, it's not unusual at all. My closest friends are those I met in World of Warcraft (had my share of weird stalkers there as well --").

As for the crazy stalker method... I really don't understand... I mean, there's no way it worked on anyone, right?
But this kind of thing is not just on Goodreads, or any other website/forum. I've had guys walk up to me and say "You're hot. Want to [insert sexual allusion] with me?"

The only difference is that they spam insults with PM instead of yelling them in my face after I say "Nope, not interested. Bye now!"

It's true!
I live about in the middle of Durham and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but I could walk to London in about 10minutes according to a lotta people I've met from other countries.
Kinda like how some people seem to presume you just pop around to see the Queen on a weekend for tea.
I don't even like tea!
Plus, we all know the REAL Queen of England is Elton John and I don't rightly know where he lives, but it's probably London like the rest of us.

Sorry you got a weird, creepy message.

I’ve never had a stalker either. I have resting bitch face so that helps. They see my profile pic and think... “nope”.

My sister is super nice and friendly looking and gets hit on when we go out without one of the husbands, but not this girl 😂 one guy who was hitting on her called me “the disapproving friend”.

I had no idea I had a character trait! I laughed so hard. Resting bitch face is such a great thing in this respect, but super annoying when people come up to you when you’re walking down the street and say “you should try smiling once in a while”

The women in my family all seem to have faces that say "Tell me all of your problems, I care." And its like...if I don't know you, then no I really don't care 😂 , cold as that sounds. If I know someone, then yeah I care and will want to help if I can but I have lost count of the number of times total strangers have started telling me their life story. Its kind of crazy.

I need to improve my resting bitch face, lmao

I have that same problem. At the grocery, in stores, anywhere, people look at me and they start talking. Children are the worst! I don’t even really like being around them but they love me and follow me around everywhere...

You know I’ve had a random child follow me around a grocery store? A toddler! Parent didn’t even realize he was missing.... I just looked down and there was a baby staring up at me. No one else in the isle...

And that’s not even the only story I have like this...
