This is all very interesting! In my province in Canada (Alberta) the learners permit you can get at 14, probably because there’s so many farm kids who are already driving at the age of 12 and operating heavy equipment like combines and swathers. Then you could get your license at 16. They’ve since moved to a graduated program, but it’s not mandatory to have any kind of driving school but it lowers your insurance rates and ends up paying for itself if you do it.

Reminds me of a thing I've seen on FB & Pinterest a few times:
How to Parallel Park
Step 1: Park somewhere else

I am terrible at parallel parking. I will do anything I can to avoid it.

I did Drivers Ed at 15 1/2 (my high school did it where if your 16th birthday occurred during first semester you had the option of taking Drivers Ed over the summer, so I did), but didn't actually go get my license until I was almost 18. I just didn't want too, but it finally became a necessity. We live 5 miles outside of town and there is pretty much no such thing as public transit where I live. So if I wanted to get a job, I had to get my license. So I did.

I've gotten really good at parallel parking over the past 10 years since i always have to park to catch the public transportation to get to the city for work. With the rear facing cameras now it's sooo much easier.

My next car might have cameras... I'm about a decade behind on cars... my first car in 2009 was a 1992... my 2nd car in 2012 was a 1998 or 1999... my 3rd car in 2015 is a 2006... my next car might only be 5 years old...

Chris (murphy44) | 710 comments Well hello my reading friends! I haven't been on here much for the last week because it was my birthday and I decided to spend quality time with books, family, and Captain Morgan! I even introduced some new books to my current library because, well, the old books were getting lonely. So my small book village has increased in population by 23... Good thing I'm not doing that book buying challenge like some of you are! I'd link a picture to show you the books but I've never been able to figure out how, so I'll just list them off for you. If you'd like to buddy read any of them, let me know and we can work something out!
Forest of Ruin
The City of Brass
Death's Mistress
Chronicles of the Black Company
The Way of Kings
Leviathan Wakes
The Waking Fire
Rise of the Necrofauna: A Provocative Look at the Science, Ethics, and Risks of De-Extinction
Ender's Game
Ender in Exile
Godsgrave
Orphan X
Ready Player One
Red Rising
Golden Son
Morning Star
Arrowood
Skullsworn
The Dragonbone Chair
Stone of Farewell
The Herald
Dragon Teeth
The Bear and the Nightingale

So I think I'm set for the year (and then some lol). OH, and after all that i bought a nice bookmark that says, "It's not hoarding, if it's books!" Cheers!

Sounds like fun to me.

There’s a Ready Player One BR starting March 1st, and some of us are doing The Way of Kings April 10th.
I totally failed at Leviathan Wakes late last year, so depending on when you wanted to do it I’d be up for trying that one again!

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I think there are different types of bakewell tarts Chris but I used to have the small round cakes with the cherry in the middle but haven't had those in a long time

Also I would be down to read the Red Rising series if your interested

That sounds great Sarah! I've read RPO already, it was fantastic - I bought it more as a reread and because my wife wanted to read it. I'll definitely keep my eye on the April read for The Way of Kings because i think it will be nice to experience Sanderson in an epic format. And regarding Leviathan Wakes, just let me know when you're good to go and I'll try my best to partake in the read!

Yeah buddy! The last time I was in England I went to the grocery store and bought a 4 pack of the tarts with the jam in the middle of the almond paste, topped with white icing sugar and a half cherry. You can't buy them in Canada anymore, so I looked up and found the recipe online and now we bake'em from scratch for dinner guests and parties and such. I use Stevia instead of sugar because of my diabetes and they're great!

And in regards to Red Rising, just let me know when you have time and want to start since you're much busier than me! I'm pretty much booked solid this month though.

idiffer | 765 comments Did NOT know selling books could be so profitable. You know how much a 5th edition russian translation of a D&D rulebook is worth? 70$. Now let's see if I can sell an english 3rd edition in Russia for three times its original price...

PS: getting rid of my dead tree books, cause I like reading on my phone, and like MONEY, tons and tons of money.

I totally get you on the two hand thing. Harder to snack like Margret said, and with my kindle I can hold a cup of coffee/tea in one hand and swipe with the other!

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I think the worst thing for me is posture because I have a reading chair I can sit on but when I am in bed and I get really tired you start to find a way to sit comfortably and it’s worse when you have to wrestle with the light source since you have the lamp and can’t be bothered to switch on the main light

Oh yeah those fivers I remember how everyone was ranting about it when they came in I was surprised when I first got it because they were so small and plastic and my main gripe was they don’t bend well but I’m used to it now

Yes and the tenners now too! Wonder when they'll change the 20s.

Hardback books I can pretty much only read sat up in bed with my knees up in front of me. Paperbacks I'm not so bad, I can get comfy anywhere, it's just the two hand thing. I definitely appreciate the benefits of my kindle, but I'm not ready to let go of paper books! Even if they just sat on my shelves forever. I love them!

message 1634: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments It probably exists but probably not in Bradford out of curiosity what dvds do you have s t just cds or do they come with the boxes and all that

This talk actually reminds me of a Tarantino interview where he voices his dislike towards Netflix because it changed how people viewed films (lets be honest here if we don’t like what we see we switch off)

Fortunately I still remember going to a video store when I was young and while it was cool I don’t fully miss it since technology is just getting better and everything is efficient and while I like the prospect of CD’s I don’t have any hate with Netflix cos who knows we might have something better in the next couple of decades

I don't know how networks block stuff, but my whole country has blocked some sites, and I just use the browsec extension for firefox. Have you tried similar add-ons or proxy sites? There's a ton of ways to get around this. Americans are all into VPN programs.

Am I gonna get in trouble for sharing torrent site links here? bc if so, I'll message ahdam privately. Mod answer please?

message 1642: by Ahdam (new)

Dad will find it awkward that a German girl has come all the way to Bradford to meet me and my mum would probably kill me she would probably think that I got a girlfriend or something and it will probably be my last day in this world

Sisters will be okay they’ll be surprised I have a social life and the fact that your from Germany will be bonus points hahaha

But imagine if I visited you out of nowhere I would probably spend my time looking awkward and vulnerable to people talking about me in German 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤓🤓
