Any time I tried listening to an audiobook directly from the Kindle app it had a tinny echo... you can try it, but I recommend downloading the Audible app... anything you buy or rent on Kindle will appear in your Audible library, assuming you have your accounts linked (i think that's mandatory these days?)..
I use only Audible app myself but I think you can use Kindle app for listening if you own the ebook too and the book supports whispersync.
I think you can download audios directly to a Kindle Fire if you buy from Audible but I just have the apps downloaded on my phone. I used to back-up the audios but I haven't done that in a long time and I forget how honestly plus I have 1 million so yeah, ugh to that! I have a folder on my phone with Audible, Chirp, Kobo, Hooopla, Libby, Audiobooks.com, Soundbooth, Everand, Prolofic Works, etc. so they are all in the same place when I need to listen :)
I never read or watched watership down... but I've heard D&D players discuss their childhood trauma surrounding it, when talking to other players/friends/family, that never read it...

You will probably have to have the audible app on your phone.

That said I read the book in 4th grade and then at least once a year after, I was the only kid that checked the book out of the library and when I graduated 8th grade the librarian gave it to me, I think she was afraid other kids may check it out eventiually lol["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

they aired it Easter Sunday 2016, in the UK... families were appalled, not realizing what they were about to do to their kids, lol... it didn't get upped from G to PG rating until 2023, lol... came out in like 1974...

Dimension 20 also did a season/campaign spiritually inspired by the book... about a family of stoats...

I listen on my phone via the Audible app, though there are many as stated above. I always have a book going when I do household chores, cooking and driving. Sometimes while eating or doing other things too though those first three are my primary. I've also hooked my husband into listening on our long drives to weekend fun :)For a first time audio listener I'd probably go with Project Hail Mary. It's such heart warming story with fantastic narration and a neat surprise.
If you're in the Dungeon Crawler Carl BR (or interested in it), that audiobook is super active, great voices. It's an Audible Only though. But if you don't have audible yet, you get one free audiobook when you do a free trial...I also saw you mention St. Mary's in the Sales thread--that is another really good series on audio, good for beginners...
Timelord Iain wrote: "For sure :DIt was about stoats and other animals in a forest being cut down by loggers..."
Do you mean The Animals of Farthing Wood? I loved that series as a kid and always wanted a copy of the book, but the last years I've looked out of nostalgia and never found any.

It will mostly be to do house chores, gardening,...a bit as a motivation to get things done. So, I've got time tomorrow and will install the Audible app and I think to start with 'St. Mary' or 'Project Hail Mary'.
I'm curious if listening will hold my attention.

You could try eye and audio reading DCC to get used to audio, too--I'm doing that right now just 'cuz I want to eye-read (I retain detail better) but love the audio...I also really recommend trying rereads on audio--when I was starting to train myself, I could only really follow either really active narrators or rereads...
Project Hail Mary is awesome but I don't remember if the narrator is super active or not...
Is Project Hail Mary (view spoiler)? I was not a huge fan, definitely did not like it nearly as much as most but it wasn't because of the narrator from what I remember.
Ann-Marie wrote: "Is Project Hail Mary [spoilers removed]? I was not a huge fan, definitely did not like it nearly as much as most but it wasn't because of the narrator from what I remember."I wouldn't call it that. You may be thinking of Children of Time.
Ann-Marie wrote: "Is Project Hail Mary [spoilers removed]? I was not a huge fan, definitely did not like it nearly as much as most but it wasn't because of the narrator from what I remember."He sits there working on lab stuff most of the time. I didn't like it that much either.
I really enjoyed Project Hail Mary... but I like the science problem-solving stuff--same in the Martian--and I loved the bromance...

And the language thing, I was like seriously? So dumb lol
Out of interest, those who do audio when doing chores, driving etc. do you listen to music much? If you do, when? Just asking cos music is my go-to for chores etc. I had intended on trying audio for a re-read; was actually gonna try it for the name of the wind, but I realised when I got to it that I just don't want to lol. I love the act of physically reading too much and like to fully immerse myself into stories. I also have an inkling that I just wouldn't get as much satisfaction from audio.
Nirkatze wrote: "Language thing? That it was [spoilers removed]? I thought that was cool... Each has different tastes!"I'm with you Nirkatze, I thought that was awesome and loved it in the audio book.

I prefer books over music these days though not always. Sometimes I'll cook or whatever to music instead. It's just rare.

I do not listen to music much, if I am not listening to an audiobook I am listening to a podcast. The exception to that is when I am with my 7yo niece, then I listen to Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga lol
Beena wrote: "Out of interest, those who do audio when doing chores, driving etc. do you listen to music much? If you do, when? Just asking cos music is my go-to for chores etc. I had intended on trying audio ..."
I prefer listening to music while I'm driving unless I'm on a long road trip, then I'll take time to listen to music and a book. About the only time I ever listen to an audio book is if I'm doing stuff around the house. I don't really like listening to fantasy on audio though I occasionally do, especially if it's a reread. Most of the time it's a mystery or thriller. I find those easier to pay attention to for some reason.
Same with music while driving unless I’ll be driving for longer than 3 hours. If it’s 2 hours, I always go Hamilton. Anything over that is an audiobook. But anything under 2 hours is me singing at high volume. I do audiobooks while I do some chores. Cooking, if it’s a new recipe, is podcasts. I also audiobook when I do crafts because my brain just stops and I get sucked right into the story.
Beena wrote: "Out of interest, those who do audio when doing chores, driving etc. do you listen to music much? If you do, when? Just asking cos music is my go-to for chores etc. I had intended on trying audio ..."
Yes. I love music. Sometimes my brain is too tired to pay attention or enjoy audiobooks. And then I opt for Spotify.
Same as Narilka... altho since I've been reading more, I've been listening to music more... sometimes I don't want to start a 4th book of the day, and just listen to a bunch of music until bedtime...
I haven't been listening to music much since I started audiobooking. Though sometimes I'll randomly sing while listening to an audiobook or reading. I much prefer books to music, though sometimes feelings gotta get out. Then I'll go to East-Asian-style (ie: private room) karaoke with friends.I started to say that I don't get as much detail on audio as I do on eye-read--but that's not quite true... I notice different things, and miss different things... it is a different experience... Kind of like book v. movie are different experiences, but 100% faithful to text, and the quality depends on the performance of the narrators. A great narration can make a so-so book great, and vice versa.
Nirkatze wrote: "Kind of like book v. movie are different experiences, but 100% faithful to text, and the quality depends on the performance of the narrators. A great narration can make a so-so book great, and vice versa. "So much this. A narrator can make or break a listening experience.
I just saw the trailer for Project Hail Mary today for the first time lol They give away a lot of the plot, I was surprised!
Ann-Marie wrote: "I will still watch the movie because I <3 Ryan Gosling so much lol"What? They're making a movie??

I thought The Martian film was an excellent adaptation, so I immediately checked, and it's the same screenwriter! I loved Project Hail Mary even more than The Martian, so I hope that they do it justice.
*watches trailer*
Yeah, it gives away a lot, so @Saar if you haven't watched it yet, I'd beware. I think there's an extra benefit of going in blind with Hail Mary in particular, as that way during the entire first section you get to piece together everything alongside the character. Plus the trailer reveals a later plot point.

Right? So much for the big reveal lol
How did I not know they were adapting PHM?? Just watched the trailer and wow they revealed a lot of things. Makes sense to hook people in but I liked going blind to read the book and the movie doesn't gives that experience
I am okay with giving details about him but the reveal should not have been featured in the trailer!
For a movie trailer, it would be impossible to make one that didn't spoil the first part of the book. 😂Basics like, "Who is the main character?" and, "What the hell is going on?" are hard to ignore. Still, I'm glad I was able to go in completely blind.Damn, if this news hasn't got me hankering for a reread though.
It makes me really curious about how the movie is going to be plotted--like, will they do the dual timelines with flashbacks like the book? Or go completely chronological? Since they gave away one of the biggest spoilers in the first 10 seconds of the trailer....Also, the movie's not until March 2026. This is mega early for a trailer.
I guess it is a good thing the release date is so far away, if they had more of the effects done they may have shown more about the reveal lol
You all got me into reading 'Project Hail Mary' the coming days.I haven't looked for Audible yet, because the current heatwave is now at day 3 and my brain is just melting. I can't focus on reading, when it's just so hot.

I do re-reads, YA and urban fantasy mostly. Leaving the more complex/hyped stuff for eye reading.
For side loaded stuff I like to use Listen Audiobook Player. Just listen on my phone with wireless earphones. Bought Xiaomi ones for like 20€ years ago and they still work well.
