I don't say Snowmageddon... I say everyone is acting like it's the end of the world tomorrow... batten down the hatches...

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Apparently we'll hit freezing temps all the way in the gulf coast of Texas too... It's always a hazard when this happens here because we're so unused to ice on the roads.. Let's just hope I don't get stuck at the hospital again!

I have all the deets! I worked for several years as a concierge at a local hotel, so I know cool things to do! It's been a while though, so I'm not caught up on everything.

re: winter storms--I hope everyone stays warm and safe and no hospitals, no no!

message 6155: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments Our winter has been mega lame here in Salt Lake. Barely gotten any snow. My son is so sad about it. I don’t think we have one coming either, at least I haven’t heard anything.

Nirkatze, where in Alaska? My husbands sister is in Fairfield (that’s the name right? Suddenly that sounds wrong and I’m too lazy to google it) and we’ve been trying to get up there to visit for ages. Seeing the northern lights is numero uno on my bucket list.

message 6156: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 20994 comments Fairbanks, I'm guessing? That's about an 8 hour drive north of me. About half the folk in Alaska live in Anchorage. It's a lot colder in Fairbanks, being landlocked. ^^

Seriously, if you do get up to visit, drop me a line!

I've been good since seeing 30 Days of Night back in college ;)

Vampire movie, 2007, Josh Hartnett, no sunlight lots of violence... that's about all I remember :D

message 6159: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments I love that movie. I watch it a few times a year. I should totally make it a tradition to watch it on the shortest day of the year. December 21st?

Fireplaces. Fireplaces make everything cozy. And Christmas lights strung indoors... some days I don't see the sun at all, stuck in my classroom from 7am to 7pm... but coming home to a fireplace makes all the difference.

I love real fireplaces. A nice crinkling fire and some smores to cook over it are the highlights of winter.

message 6167: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments I enjoy a fireplace but fires in my house make me nervous.

And SAD is real and I have it. I adore those long summer days. The sun is up at 5 am and seems to go down at 11. It feels like anything is possible.

And so it begins... 6 days after New Year... time to take Goodreads offline and do alot of maintenance "because less people use Goodreads this time of year, and it's the best time to do it"...

Sucks to be people like us that use Goodreads consistently year round...

All this to say I'm starting to get the expected amounts of extra "page unavailable" and "failed to upload comment" results

I haven't been getting it like I got it for a bit today... occasional failed loads... GR stopped loading for a few minutes straight on me today... then everything was normal... I keep expecting notifications to break...

And I hear the new 2025 reading challenge is very buggy, from reddit and my visit to the Help Page to see what people were saying...

message 6172: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments There's no way the challenge update is going to go well. GR is on an old system and who knows how buggy & cobwebbed Kindle system is. XD

Timelord Iain | 35273 comments Mod
So many people are having problems with books not counting, books counting twice, etc etc etc...

I guess people have been asking for an update, apparently, but I miss all the features lost from the old system... ability to see friend's challenges, the sitewide stats at the top, etc etc etc...

And then, the one time I tried to explore the new system it was so annoying... most things load new pages instead of just explaining in a popup... that's alot of subchallenges to load/explain... if it's gonna be that shitty, there should have been an announcement that explained the changes up-front...

Such a terrible rollout...

message 6174: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments That's because it's done to be "mobile" friendly. Mostly tablets or Kindle Reader. Choices on how things will be changed for interface makes a big difference on graphics & programming.

Meh

message 6175: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1651 comments I do miss seeing other's challenges.

As for the double counting:

1. If you set the book as read on Goodreads, do not set it as such on the Kindle.

2. If you set both, deleting the second one is easy.

I've been completing the challenges via Kindle for a few years; I find them fun. I wish there were a way to count paper books as well.

If you use Facebook, check your Meta Settings and Turn OFF EXTERNAL ACTIVITY TRACKING.

META default setting allows it to track everything on your phone/device and sell the info.

I found 2 years worth of apps & records. Had to manually check off to remove apps from tracking.

Then choose to Stop Tracking External Usage.

Dived into rabbit hole to check all other privacy and ad settings.

In Ad Audience lists, there's a bunch of entities that can add you to an ad list. Had to manually go into each one to click "Don't Allow".

Cautious upside, I have more friend posts showing up in my FB feed after spending 30min taking off permission to use my info and add my info to random ad lists.

This is good advice and if you're big into social media it probably bears looking into the other settings of services you use. If a service is free, you are the product.

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments On another note, Houston, TX area got several inches of snow! I don't think this has happened since the 60's... The most we've got in recent years was maybe 2 inches lol

Luckily, I'll have work off for the next couple of days because we just don't have the infrastructure to make the roads around here safe for snowy/icy conditions. Let's just hope we don't lose power like we did back in 2021...

message 6185: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Facebook & Goodreads are clinging to the idea of what it was supposed to be for and failing more over time. No good alternative to either FB or GR.

Yup, anything META runs has a default setting to track everything you do on ANY of the devices you run Facebook or Instagram.

I feel like even if you choose to OPT out of being tracked, you are still tracked, but it's not as obvious by getting targeted ads.

It's gotta be a super cold front for the lower south to get snow. Cool and weird cause it's out of the norm.

I remember how excited we used to get some snow in South Carolina. XD

LoL even when the areas are prepped for weather, stuff still doesn't work. Too many people from other places living in the area & not knowing how to drive/deal with weather.

That makes no sense because I've had to resign in on a different device in January.

Anyways. Relogged in (which lead me to multiple Page Doesn't Exist). Like, I went to my profile. Doesn't exist. Reload. Profile loads. Log out. Doesn't exist. Reload. Base page for GR shows. Every single time.

- two thumbs down -

Did not fix my notifications. XD

message 6196: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (last edited Feb 06, 2025 11:35AM) (new)

Timelord Iain | 35273 comments Mod
Well... it fixed mine and Leah's... something in profiles isn't tracking logins/activity correctly, and for some people that fixes things, because I guess GR stops giving people notifications when it thinks you haven't logged in in 2-3 months... for me and Leah it read November in January (even tho we use the site most every day)...

It was worth a try...

Your profile says last active this month now...

Pre-Edit: it IS worth noting that this doesn't fix missed notifications, it just makes future notifications start appearing again... anything from your lost day is lost forever, sadly...

I feel like they did something to how notifications work to stop the thing where they break notifications for a week, and then when they fix them it's like a clogged pipe shooting out gunk, and you keep getting old notifications for a few days after, until everything returns to normal... now they just disappear into the ether if they don't appear on time...

message 6197: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Came back to say that it fixed notifications. It doesn't make entire sense though because like I said, I had to relog in January.

Mobile webpage will ask for a relog more frequently than PC browser.

Thanks for the tip!

message 6198: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35273 comments Mod
No idea... it's the first thing I check now, when things breakdown tho... if my profile says I haven't logged in in 2-3 months, I feel confident that the relog will help...

I generally stay logged in all the time and only relog when it kicks me out... I think it's supposed to kick you out every 30 days and force a relog (based on what most checkboxes say on sites that let you stay logged in), but I feel like it's more like 90 days and at different times, when I'm forced to relog on PC and mobile...

message 6199: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments It's erratic.

I use Firefox on laptop & Brave on mobile devices. Sometimes forced log in happens every month and sometimes takes longer than 3 months.
