Felina | 2416 comments Our summer last year was actually super mild and we got a thunderstorm almost every day. It was awesome!!

But highs in the 100’s is normal for salt lake. We are in a desert after all.

Ann-Marie | 5447 comments The recent summers in NJ have been stupid hot with scattered, fast thunderstorms that don't last long enough to do any good hydrating the ground. On the other hand we have had very little snow in winter which is something I love so I guess it is a trade-off?

Summers are hot, winters are cold, storms are all over the place (some years they're often, some years they're lacking)... and some years, they practically break the seasonal calendar...

A year or 3 ago, we had 1/3 inch of snow on the ground at the end of April...

Felina | 2416 comments We got a stupid snow storm on Cinco de Mayo this year. Lame.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5357 comments I hate these thunder storms. My thunder fearing dog hasn’t stepped outside since 2pm. So now, at 10pm, I forced him out (in a downpour) and walked him for 20 minutes and he still hasn’t peed. Either his bladder will explode or he’s going to wake me up at 2 am to go pee. As much as I hate being woken I’m still hoping for that over the alternative.

message 6006: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 5447 comments The storm last night was BAD, at first I was like who is driving heavy machinery around at 10pm??? then realized it was the storm!

message 6007: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2319 comments To be honest Iain I'm living almost 20 years in England and don't remember proper cold winter here... it's more or less raining season... sleet is the nearest thing to snow, specially on the coast. In Poland...hmmm... I'll be not far from truth if I say hardly white Xmas in my hometown (central Poland) since about 30-35 years, still pretty nice snowfall by Feb or even March tho as far as I know. My Dad is saying since years that folk proverbs about weather are not truth anymore as they were when he was child. Weather is unpredictable, no matter place on Earth...

message 6008: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments That’s true for us too, in Utah. When I was little, every winter was like 10 to 15 snow storms with 2 or 3 of them being really bad. Now we usually don’t get our first snow storm until right before Christmas, if we’re lucky, and then January and February we get maybe 2 or three snow storms. Nothing like when I was little.

Except for the 22/23 winter. We got slammed. And everybody was so happy because the water tables were low. Then that spring it was thunderstorms every day. It was the best.

This past winter was the same as normal and that sucked. I hate winter and driving in snow but I love spring thunderstorms and full lakes.

Midwest USA still gets occasional blizzard levels of snow... I remember one in 2021 when I had covid... and some further back... even when it's just a decent amount of snow, they plow grocery store parking lots into big piles that take weeks to melt... don't remember that as much in recent years... mostly the snow salt on the roads, getting all over vehicles/etc...

message 6010: by Monika (new)

Monika | 2319 comments If memory serves correct, my last Xmas visit in Poland I had in 2006, snow started just after Xmas, but nothing massively crazy, I back to England just before New Year, and when I phoned my parents with New Year wishes they were laughing they can't see their car on the yard and noone who lives in the same building couldn't left it cause snow totally blocked the main door and they had to wait for local emergency services to dig the way out.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5357 comments Guys, help me please. Goodreads did an update on its website and now I can't find the number of pages in a book. Where should I be looking?

Updating comment: I found a work around. It's annoying cuz it's 5 extra steps to get there but at least there's somewhere to go.

I see what you mean. Looks like book details loads blank for me on fresh page loads. If I close then open that little dialog box, some info comes back and I can at least look at various editions. I hope the regular pages comes back and this is just a glitch.

message 6013: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments Yeah, there is some stuff happening. I saw The Edge serie got book 3 and 4 merged and it was done by Goodreads... I put it to separate again but it's still processing.

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Oh yeah that's very inconvenient! The only way I can see is to edit my activity on the book page and then change the edition to see a list of editions and page numbers...

message 6017: by Ann-Marie (new)

That's basically just one extra click, for me... half the time, I have to click book details and editions anyway... not sure if it's the volume of book pages I go to, but it's constantly forgetting what state I prefer my details expanded/collapsed...

I still hate that I have to scroll to the bottom of the page and then keep scrolling for like 10 extra seconds while all the reviews and other periphernalia loads, so I can scroll up a bit and view questions/discussions, because the site likes to delay loading parts of the page until it needs it... and they moved discussions and questions to the bottom of the page like 5 UI changes ago... from before, when it was before reviews...

Felina | 2416 comments Can I just brag for a moment? I am glorying in cancelled plans. Not only that but we are currently having a wicked thunder storm. I am listening to audiobooks and cross stitching surrounded by kitties and nibbling some homemade brownies I made while the rain pounds the window and the thunder claps drown out my audiobook. I am in heaven.

message 6027: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments I totally get you Felina. I will likely have a similar experience soon. My husband will be out for 2+ days getting a car for the family company and I will be left alone at home. Now, I am not completely happy being home alone (well with two cats and a mother-in-law one floor up) but it means I can pull a read-a-thon without feeling judged. No need to cook either. Cold dinners and store-bought pizza/lasagna for the win.

message 6028: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments Home alone is one thing I almost never get. I love to be home alone except at night. I do not like sleeping alone. I am afraid of the dark! Too many horror books. And I don’t feel comfortable or safe until I hear my husband snoring. So if I could work it out that he would be gone all day and back for bed, that would be perfect.

I'm a hermit... I love listening to books at home after work, when I'm not burnt out...

Yesterday I had a "Sleep Day"... got drowsy after work and eating, and took a nap... nap ran long, only got up for 1hr before just going back to bed for the night until work the next morning...

Batteries recharged, and back to books/etc today...

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5357 comments Once in a while, my husband goes out of town for work and while I do hate sleeping alone I do love the time between my kids going to bed and me going to sleep. I can just relax in bed and read without feeling like I’m not doing enough productive things.

I am also a bit afraid at night alone, that's why I prefer to read through night and go sleep when the sun is coming up. (I don't work summers as I work with kids so I can shift my schedule. I just do billing for the family company.) I don't read horror because my imagination is already bad enough lol.

Also in the non-horror club... I've dabbled a bit in recent years with Spooktober and Stephen King, but I'm firmly anti-horror in general, for similar reasons mentioned above...

Altho, I have firm opinions about how the difference between Horror and Urban Fantasy / etc, is pretty thin... it's a matter of framing and POV... when you follow a magic-user everything is normal, but someone on the outside that gets attacked by vampires/werewolves they didn't know were real?... basically a horror movie...

message 6038: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Sounds super cozy Felina!

The way I read doesn't involve a lot of visualization, so I can read a lot of horror without being too scared, but sometimes the horror movies can stick around in my head for days and makes sleeping hard... Doesn't stop me from watching though 😆

Felina | 2416 comments There are only a few books that have ever scared me but movies mess me up pretty good.

The big one I struggle with is the remake of Dawn of the Dead with the little zombie girl standing at the foot of their bed. I start thinking about that at night and I can’t sleep. Then if my son come in for whatever reason in the night and I see that little silloutte, I’ll lose it.

Also, in the first Paranormal Activity movie when the demon grabs her ankle when she’s sleeping and drags her out of bed and down the stairs. I can’t deal. Ever since chemo, I stick me feet out at night because of my chemo feet and if I think about that dumb movie, it’s over for me.

I saw half of Ring when I was young and it traumatised me for years 😅 I didn't want to sleep with a TV in room. I was also forced to drop Legion because that weird growling demon guy was just too much for me 😭

As for books I don't mind some horror elements in my fantasy. As long as it's not our world or it's only happening within certain supernatural society. But your normal average Joe being haunted, no thanks.

Felina | 2416 comments So I finally got my reconstruction surgery scheduled for next Thursday. It’s so short notice but I’m so excited to get it over with and then cancer will be completely in the rear view window. Plus! I get to take 7 days off work to recover so I’m going to have time to catch up on my BR’s. Gonna get caught up!! So happy. It seems weird to me to be excited about surgery but I’m so happy. This expander isn’t comfortable and the surgery wasn’t going to be until probably early next year. Someone cancelled and I got the spot. *dances* I can catch up on my BR’s and maybe get a little ahead since we’re going on a cruise in November. Everything is coming up Milhouse!
