Oh def. It's easier when i have other people I'm trying to keep up with.

Tomorrow I'll start training with my son. There were so many kids there. I didn't even expect kids to be running 5k but why not? They have endless amounts of energy. My 11 year old wanted to come with but I wasn't sure he was ready so I'm going to train with him and see if he can run the next one with me. Hoping to get the 9 year old in on it as well eventually.

It's felt like a pretty tame summer in the midwest... last year was full of power outages, including that big storm that took a week to fully repair from... 1-2 power hubs blew up / caught fire, which was alot of work to repair...

message 5875: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Jul 09, 2024 05:11AM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments Do you have power again, Tonari and has the storm passed?
I heard that it's 45°C and more at the West or East of America.
It has been here (in Belgium) around 18°C. It should've been around 25°C normally and out of nowhere there is 30°C announced today with a thunderstorm that will happen in the next hour. It has been cloudy and oppressively warm with 25°C today.
It has just been a very strange and cold Summer for now.

message 5876: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 5447 comments I am in NJ and it is ungodly hot with no break anticipated until the end of the week. The Weather Channel has Sunday as the nicest day of the week and it's going to be 95 degrees but lower humidity I guess? Today's forecast is high of 97, hot & humid....

message 5877: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35293 comments Mod
Today is a weird day where the high is 72, and it just slowly goes down all day into the 60s...

Rest of the week is back to 85-95 tho... night time temps of 65-75...

That's pretty much how it's been all summer... I don't like hot weather, but I prefer it to all the destructive storms last year...

message 5878: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments It’s been pretty nice in salt lake. High 80’s and low 90’s. I guess it’s supposed to spike this weekend with a severe heat wave warning. I don’t mind the heat. Hate the cold.

message 5879: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments I have lived in Portugal for 5 years and there are always very hot and dry summers with clear skies starting in June. Now we getting rain, cloudy days, and quite mild temperatures, storms that are pretty rare in summer... I don't mind but something is not right, certainly. Feels like I am back home in Czechia with this kind of weather.

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments Felina wrote: "I love rain so much. Especially thunder and lightning. Love!"
Me too! When I don't have to go out that is :D
But yeah I rather have some rains and clouds now and then than clear sky and heat whole summer, the sun here is so strong and it kind of sucks when there are no clouds at all. I burn easily... At least there is a breeze most days.

Still I am not complaining about our weather here when I see the chaos out there. Stays safe everyone...

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments It'll probably get hotter as the week goes on now that the storm has passed.

Luckily my mother in law lives close and she has power

message 5885: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments No good!!

When I was in highschool we lost power for a week right over Christmas break. Winter is no joke in Utah. My grandpa lives across the street. Literally kitty corner and that side of the street had power. But he would only watch westerns from the 50’s so me and my brother opted to freeze at home reading books and doing puzzles and getting 12 hours or more of sleep.

Olivia (vinjii) | 1144 comments Big vent incoming, I just needed to tell someone…

What do you do when the universe is just not giving you a break?

In the last 12 months I’ve had massive surgery (for endometriosis), then during recovery lost a 15 year old dog (who I’d lived with for 10 years, she was my now-ex-partner’s), then my relationship of 12 years fell apart, and I had to move out of my home, and finally yesterday my 16 year old dog who I’d had since he was 8 weeks old crossed the rainbow bridge.

And I’m just…. done 😭

message 5892: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments I'm so sorry Olivia. Sometimes life just keeps on throwing one thing after another at you. And I think it's precisely because major things have already fallen apart that the rest feels so impossible to handle.

For me, losing friendships/relationships and sources of support is the worst. Maybe losing a job/being kicked out of housing/losing a pet would have been more bearable if you had someone to turn to. I hate that I've had to discover how much more ableist/classist some people are, who distance themselves when you are struggling.

Keep reaching out, let people know you are having a hard time. Times of grief can actually be the best times to bond with others. Share stories of your pets. What were the things that made them special?

message 5893: by Olivia (last edited Jul 11, 2024 07:56AM) (new)

Olivia (vinjii) | 1144 comments Thank you. My friends are amazing, and I've got a good support network. It's the reason I'm still standing.

My ex-partner's dog, Lola, was a black Cocker Spaniel, and she made it to 15, I met her when she was 3 years old, and moved in with her 2 years later. I moved countries for my ex, and Lola was my emotional support companion who would sit on me and lie on me whenever I was stressed or sad. Whenever I had a migraine, she'd sit on my head, sweetest girl.

But my boy, Blue, he was perfect. He chased the frisbee for hours, even at 16, he still went for 6 mile hikes with us.
He was very reserved around strangers, and tried to herd small children (Aussie), but he made friends with everyone and was just such an absolute sweet soul apart from when he
- figured out how to steal food from the counter by jumping up and angling himself in ways he could reach the back (he even got half a beef roast once)
- found and ate chocolate in an attempt to poison himself
- figured out how to open doors
- barked at the postman for delivering a package
- pulled me downhill whenever I didn't walk fast enough
- stole a massive slice of cheese from my plate (I was sitting on the sofa) during a blackout

At the end, he only really liked to drink from rivers, and we used aquarium equipment to make a pot of water bubble so he would drink...

He was so sweet (and active and healthy until he got ill) that our vet outright refused to put him to sleep a week ago...I knew in my gut that it was the end, but she wanted to try again and threw another batch of drugs his way. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

It was a sunny day, but when we came home afterwards, the skies suddenly opened and there was a two minute downpour, followed by a massive rainbow in front of our balcony. I'm not a believer, but what timing!

Nirkatze | 21010 comments So sorry to hear about your Lola & Blue, @Olivia, they sound like wonderful dogs... Very Good Boy and Very Good Girl. My mom had a Australian blue heeler when I was growing up, and she was the most loyal and sweetest thing.

message 5895: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments I feel you, Olivia. I had the most handsome perfect old man cat. Such a friendly and sweet ginger kitty. He was 17 when he passed. And he died a month after I found out I had cancer. It was so hard. I miss him everyday.

I know you aren’t a believer, but I am so I’ll pray for you. These things are hard for sure. ((Hugs))

message 5896: by Narilka (new)

Maybe the universe thinks I need 6 things? Or - I bloody hope not - 9?

Thank you everyone!

I really struggled with reading these last few years. I feel like when I'm stressed out it's easier to focus on television or videogames than books. And I really miss reading as well.
