Time to sign up for a Blackwell's Credit Card :D

Or open a new card specifically for Blackwell's...

Nirkatze | 21010 comments Huh. My order on Blackwells went through fine last week... maybe I got in just before the shenanigans? Also used a Visa and U.S. purchase, don't know if any of that made a difference... I don't think I had a $1 smoke charge...

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments Well, the last mail from Blackwells was that I needed to contact my bank (again, sigh). I don't know if I'll try and order again, though. It's Mastercard and UK purchase, here.

Internet shenanigans can be random & specific to certain people... might be working fine for everyone but Saar, sadly... good luck...

Playing phone tag is never fun...

Maybe you need a 3rd party to gift it to you, and just pay the 3rd party/friend?... avoid trying to get your card to work on Blackwells entirely...

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments Yes, I think I'll place my order that way. Maybe that will be the simplest solution.

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments Wondering if someone can help me... it's been a while since I used that Backerkit site for the first Stormlight book and I've forgotten how it works lol..

I think I've got it right- when you pledge, you are in effect, paying for your book (and add-ons etc. if you want them). Right?

I'm assuming so, cos it says this on the side in the checkout bit:

Your payment method will be charged after the campaign ends on Mar 29, 2024 at 6:00pm PDT and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.

After the campaign ends, you will receive a survey. You will be able to select exact options for your order, and, if applicable, provide your shipping address, pay for shipping, and pay for sales tax (depending on your location).

You will receive a confirmation email when your pledge is successfully processed.

I don't know why I'm so confused lol, why does he have to do it as a campaign? Surely he could sell all this stuff straight-off in his store?

Backerkit functions as a companion to Kickstarter and another campaign website...

This is more of a $1 campaign, which has to last 30 days, I think... not to mention he's got $20m+ in pledges (haven't checked since I signed up for the audiobooks day 3)... so it's gonna happen... you're just not gonna get charged until March 30th-ish...

I had to setup a new password for Backerkit... it had my email on file, but didn't take my Kickstarter password since they're technically different sites?... this is the first time I've used Backerkit without accessing it from an email link from a Kickstarter campaign...

message 5760: by Beena (new)

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments Ahhh, of course, the original campaign thing was on Kickstarter...

See I didn't realise it was a different site, I assumed that's the one Way of Kings was done on cos I couldn't remember. I didn't have my Kickstarter password saved anywhere anyway. so I just did a password reset and that seemed to work funnily enough..

Yeah, I saw he's far surpassed his goal, so realised it's succeeded. Hmmm, I might just leave the pledging and wait until it's all set up, (being that its purpose is fulfilled anyway) then you can skip straight to buying the book...

message 5761: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21010 comments That is a good question--what can you get out of the Backerkit "Kickstarter" that you can't get from just waiting until everything is available on the Dragonsteel store? Well, for one, I think things are anywhere from 10%-20% cheaper in the campaign... I don't think anything though has been said to be exclusive... unless the stock all sells out...

Probably the expensive signed limited copy stuff...

message 5763: by Beena (new)

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments Well, I just checked Sanderson's shop and The Way of Kings limited edition on there isn't signed, so that's the difference. (The price is the same I think).

I've taken the plunge and pledged on Backerkit. I wish they blimmin' had instructions on the site, explaining how it works.

All I want is the signed book- I tried to pledge just $5, (assuming it worked how Iain said) but the site edited it back to 250, so you are paying for the actual stuff once it goes through on the 29th March.

Erin | 385 comments Nirkatze wrote: "That is a good question--what can you get out of the Backerkit "Kickstarter" that you can't get from just waiting until everything is available on the Dragonsteel store? Well, for one, I think thin..."

I think the difference is Backerkit/Kickstarter gets you a signed book. And then it's also cheaper on Backerkit vs later on Dragonsteel. I looked up the Secret Project kickstarter to compare and the kickstarter reward level that got you the 4 hardbacks was $160. But if you go on Dragonsteel's website now and get the 4 hardback bundle it's $220

Timelord Iain | 35293 comments Mod
Makes sense... the fact Sanderson multitasks and does youtube videos while signing all his books shows just how long it takes to sign 1000s of book pages... and doing it in bulk probably saves a ton of time...

And gives the personal touch... would probably be so much easier if you could just program a machine to do it, like those programmable sowing machines...

And yea... with Backerkit, you're basically just buying the items you want, instead of pledging $1 to get access to add-on the item you want, like you'd have to do on Kickstarter... and Kickstarter comes with all the caveats about a failed campaign, which is a non-issue for someone like Sanderson... Sanderson is mostly using Kickstarter/Backerkit to handle the email/physical address management aspect of the whole thing... vs trying to host the whole thing on the Dragonsteel website...

You’re basically just buying the items. I think the benefit is that you get the book signed and sooner than available to the public. And depending on which bundle you get there’s either freebies or cheaper books thrown in as well. I wouldn’t expect anything he sells to be exclusive though. He’s all about getting his books to anyone who wants them.

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments I wish I could do that. I try to push the speed on re-reads like now on Kate Daniels series to get used to it more but since I am not native English speaker I sometimes even struggle on 1x because of less clear accent. Also I have trouble remembering names when I don't read them. I leave audiobooks mostly for YA, urban fantasy, lately litrpg. Very helpful for re-reads too. Reserve reading for adult epic fantasy.

Felina | 2416 comments I started a new job yesterday. It’s in my same company but for a specialized team. But my new boss was MIA yesterday and this new team and this new position were just created so I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing. Yesterday I was able to work on a few projects from my old job that were lingering but not time sensitive so the people who took over my clients wouldn’t have to deal with them. If my boss is MIA again today, I really don’t know what to do with my time. I don’t like this. I enjoy being challenged at work and I like to be busy at work. There is also a real possibility I could get laid off. Like I trained off all my clients and then they decide to not do this new team and they’re like, oh sorry, we don’t have a place for you, bye. So I’m really worried. Just a little stressed and thought I’d complain to my book buddies.

If I don’t hear from my boss today I’m going to listen to audiobooks (which I normally can’t do at work because of getting caught up in stories and not actually working 😂) type up a spreadsheet of my owned audiobooks and apply for new jobs.

I sympathise, Felina.

The council I work for was amalgamated into a county-wide major council last year and they've finally got around to reorganising our department. Two of the team are moving sideways into different-but-related jobs, and three of the other guys have received letters 'inviting' them to move into new-ish roles; if they refuse they don't know if they'll be able to keep their current jobs or be told "Well, you've made yourself unemployable; bye." If I lose my job at the end of June (I'm on a rolling contract) it's not a major loss as I'm officially temporary staff, but these guys have been here for twenty plus years...

I hope it all works out for you!

Felina | 2416 comments My small company was bought out by a huge company last summer. We went from 40 employees to 10,000+. I hate the big company but it did provide opportunity for growth where my little one didn’t. I got recruited into this role because I have a certain set of skills. Ha ha. Mainly I’m a good worker, I like to be challenged so I’ve kinda of recreated my previous position so I was 2 times as effective/productive as my co-workers.

But others in my small company have been let go despite being key players because they were being realigned into different roles that didn’t fit them or were a considerable pay decrease.

My new boss is awesome. I’ve met with him a few times and after I talk to him I get so excited. But it looks like he’s very hands off which I will love, I’m just really concerned that he had no plan for training or anything for yesterday…and it does look like today.

I saw a job that would be a major step up for me when I was looking casually last night. It’s a long shot I’d get it but I’m going to apply for it anyway. It would be about $25K more than I make now so if I did get it, that would be crazy! And it’s just adjacent to my skill set to be a challenge.

I'm always in Desktop mode on my mobile browsers. In Desktop mode, the section for dates is there but no options for inputing dates in drop down menus.

Will check on laptop later, but guessing there's some mobile update to GR that's broken reviews.

I had this same or similar problem on my laptop a few minutes ago. I was trying to update the read dates on a book and it wouldn't let me. I think I ended up going through the book's page to edit it and it worked, instead of trying to edit it through my read list.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I use the book page every time. It cuts down on GR posting issues. Hope it gets fixed soon! I wrote a note in the post to place when comic was read. It'll be annoying but easy to fix later.

Yeah, must be website updates. Keep thinking this is how GR dies. 😑😮‍💨💩

It's certainly annoying that there are so many issues like this that keep happening.
