I'm out there in cargo shorts, giving coworkers a hard time in their 5 layers of clothes :D
With my knee-length compression socks, only like 1 inch of skin is exposed, other than wind it's not too bad... I bundle up a bit, on the upper half of my body, in cold weather...

About to give it a test so I can see if I jam with the style, but can someone who's read Jade City answer two quick questions please:Is it fast-paced?
Is it action-packed?

Neither. Lots of establishing story setting and characters in #1.
I've found a new challenge in 2 other groups, but I don't know if there's animo here and if it's okay 'to steal' and to post it here? It's about collecting dragon eggs and creating habitats for your dragon.
Random question--does anyone remember a series where women wear vials around their necks to collect tears? Especially mother's tears, I think... I have a scene memory of one woman collecting the tears of another not of her culture, and giving her the bottle to hold on to... I don't think it's the Aiel in Wheel of Time, or the desert people in Demon Cycle... but it might have been, or something like that...
No, haven't read either of those... it wasn't a major issue, just a small part of the culture... thank you for the suggestions though!
Ya'll, I went down a fun rabbit hole. Tear CatchersBased on Nirkatze question that I didn't get an answer for. But I feel like I've read it in a few stories. Just don't know which. 🤗🫣
Points to Biblical & Roman times.
Romanticized custom in Victorian times.
Do a little search. It's neat.
Looking up books and other stuff seems always much more intresting when you've got some study to do 😂
I wish my books weren't all in boxes... usually I'd just walk through my shelves and look until something jumps out at me...
I heard a reddit stpry recently where wife wasn’t happy to learn husband’s family collects and disperses teeth after death… everyone has a tooth jar, and the teeth you’ve collected over your life (from other people’s deaths) go into a chest of thousands of teeth after being carried around for a second lifetime… sounds like a longstanding unmentioned tradition, and something else dating back to Victorian times (altho hear and stuff is more common)

Sounds cool! If you add it to your portal challenge, I'd be interested to see how it works :)

I'll think on how I can fit this one into the portal challenge. I don't think it would be difficult.
GR feels pretty broken right now... any thread more than like 2 minutes old is throwing errors when I try to comment, and I have to copy, reload, and paste to successfully comment... so annoying...
Remninds me of the bounty hunter aliens from Jodie Whitaker's first episode as The Doctor, and a Game Changer skit about less successful Tooth Fairies:

I start getting into the habit of ctrl+a ctrl+c every time I write a comment, just in case I get the pink wall of death... seems like if there's a "new" tag on a comment, page must be refreshed or will error-wall out.
Hey everyone, I started a booktube channel. This was something I thought about doing for over a year and finally got the courage to try it. I'm enjoying it despite feeling self-conscious, and learning as I go. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnwa...

Good luck
Good luck
I'm the worst at even keeping up with Goodreads data input... general January website breakdowns, busy reading schedule, and real life injuries, have me 3 weeks behind on 2024 reviews already (30+ books), and I still haven't finishined inputting November/December 2023...
I swear I'm gonna catch up soon...

Do you ever feel guilty for reading over your challenge goal? Last year I found it a good challenge to read 75 books. This year I quit my job so I upped it to 100 books. So far I'm at 15 books read, and 8 books over upped goal, and I feel so guilty for it. Like there are better things I should be doing (even though my books are mostly on audiobook and I multitask while "reading" them. And I know that eventually I'll prob get another job and my reading numbers will drop, but for now the number of books ahead of schedule is just staring at me. Today I watched a Disney show while jogging instead of listening to a book, just to slow my reading speed. Talk me off the guilt ledge please. And thank you for being part of my internet therapy session.
What is this nonsense?... I feel guilty when I'm NOT reading, like I'm wasting valuable time...
And I've read 47 books this month, nearly 17k pages, and have 4 books / 1856 pages left to read for BRs (and I dropped out of one BR)...
Time wasted where I could be reading =
1) Mindlessly watching numbers go up in my idle games to a silent room...
2) Watching youtube videos/clips
3) Watching game shows and D&D shows on Dropout.tv
4) Talking on Goodreads/Discord
5) Falling asleep in my recliner after work (usually with audiobook playing, but I need to rewind when I wake up and stop "listening with my eyes closed")...
Only time I don't consider wasted = watching Youtube/Dropout while eating, and/or laying in bed about to go to sleep...

I've never experienced this, but it's also the sort of reason why I have purposely never signed up for the Reading Challenge. To my mind, the number of books that I end up reading is the perfect amount that I should read. Not that I've never wasted time reading a bad book, but more that I want to preserve my internal sense of motivation, and feel in my body whether I've been reading too little/too much lately, independent of any outside counter, even self-determined.
If I'm reading "too much," it's not because of a tracker, but because maybe read all day yesterday, and am feeling sluggish, like I need to go outside and be active today. Basically these sources of external motivation like challenges function by telling you that what you're currently doing is wrong, in order to change your behavior.
So I would suggest thinking about how you feel about your reading right now, regardless of the counter. Does it feel good? Do you tend to have periods of intense reading, followed by a phase of other hobbies? If it's happening naturally because you're excited about the books you're reading, then let it happen! Enjoy it! It never hurts to be ahead of the curve to give yourself leeway if you are busy at a new job later on. :)
I exaggerate a smidge about wasting time (except sitting in silence)...
If I'm timed/drowsy, I usually switch to music, helps wake me back up... I've been getting solid 8hrs of sleep lately, instead of the 6-7 I usually get when I'm not healing...
Done a fair bit of hibernation mode lately, sleeping extra...
I do alot of re-reading (I think I'm like 60% for the year, so far)... like talking books with people...
My main measure of over-reading/over-booking, is when none of my current BR options loaded up for listening sound appealing... but part of that tends to be how I parcel out my books for home listening and work listening...

You know stuff goes in waves. Right now, you have time to read and you're interested in doing that.
So, don't feel bad for something that makes you feel good. I doubt you're taking time away from other activities, chores or interactions.
Give yourself a little mental cheer, enjoy what you're doing (whatever that is) and be okay with whatever state you are in.
It's nice to have a day when the most exciting problem is whether or not you read more than you thought you would. 🤗👌

I discovered a new to me genre a few months ago that I really like (light fluff romance). The books are so easy to read I can finish 2 in 3 days. Normally the reading challenge is a great motivator for me but now it's just staring at me judgingly. Part of it is probably a guilt of not working lol. But I'm saving that guilt for a different therapy session ;-)

Your level of reading is not something I could ever do lol. If I tried that pace I would def burn myself out on it and end up jumping to the next hobby on the list.
Mostly mentioned to show you're over-reading is fine by comparison...
It's easy to fall down an efficiency/time-management rabbithole, tho... as also evinced by me...

Def need someone to tell me when I'm overthinking things. I get lost in my own anxiety spiral sometimes
It's good to juggle! In theory, not having guilt and stuff would be good, but it probably makes people less motivated. Considering that negative aspects tend to be higher motivaters.
Like I used to struggle with learning how to 'relax' and did a bunch of different things to learn about relaxation. Good learning phase! I learned that relaxing doesn't mean to do nothing. It can be active or inactive. You can relax by snoozing for a sun tan, taking time to make traditional tea or hands on coffee, reading a book, playing a game, chatting, hiking, etc. Relaxing is more about changing your state of mind from what causes you stress. Not necessarily about choosing to do nothing.
Fluff books are great! Just like fluffy movies, tv shows, etc. 🎶🎵🎶
Ohh but it sounds so good, that you just found a new genre that you like! Treasure that joy!I know it can be easy to feel guilty, I am no stranger to that thought-process. But really, I think we should treasure it if we find things we enjoy. We need it! Life and work will get in the way soon enough.
So I thought I'd post and people'd be like, yeah I feel guilty about it but *insert comment*. I did not think everyone would be like "nope, you crazy" lol This has been eye opening, thank you lol
Reading is definitely my escape... and I love finding new super-niche genres to love (even if it's harder to find lists of books in the genres)...

Nah. You're not crazy. You are normal.
Woo! Normal! 🤣
Nahhh, you're weird, but then we're all weird in our own ways. My weird reading stat quirk in that I don't want to finish two books published in the same year on the same day. Because then in my dot graph they overlap and one will disappear. And what's even the point of reading if you don't get the little dot!?See, data is a mixed blessing. ^^;;
