Felina | 2416 comments Same. I joined in April, I think. It’s just more fun to read and plan with other people. And I’ve gotten to read books that I don’t think I would have even heard of if not for the group. Like Alex Verus which I love. We have a good group here. Looking forward to many more years and over scheduled calendars.

I was stupid and thought I could schedule a grocery delivery from Walmart today. Nope! I get to go out in the holiday madness this morning to prep for all the Christmas food. We do a Christmas candlight finger foods feast. Hopefully I can find everything I need. 😬 But I’m excited to spend the day cooking and audiobooking.

Nyssa | 1651 comments I'm not sure when I joined, but I think this was my first full year participation-wise, and I've loved it!

I ditto Felina in that it is more fun to read with other people and to be exposed to titles you might not have found otherwise. I especially like that it encourages me to catch up on or complete previously started series.

I also ditto Nirkatze that there are a fantastic group of readers here! I get an instant smile on my face when someone comments on a book we are reading together.

Between this group and my daughter, this is the most titles I have ever read in a year!

I wish everyone a Very Happy & Healthy Holiday Season!
And to those who celebrate - Merry Christmas !

Mel | 2360 comments Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone!

Nirkatze, that's crazy to think that you've only been here for the past couple years, since you're so active and integrated now. Mei and Felina, likewise you've both jumped into the BRs and we're so glad to have you here! Nyssa, It looks like you also joined in 2017, same as me - 6 years both seems like a short and a long time. Congratulation though on a wonderful reading year!

This year was weird, because on one hand... it wasn't my best reading year. Don't get me wrong, I still got a good 120 books in, and there were some really good ones in there too. But I found myself rereading more, or anticipating sequels from reliable fave authors. I feel like I'm overdue for a fave new author discovery and binge-fest.

On the flip side, while my personal reading has felt sluggish, I absolutely have loved seeing all this new energy in this group. It's really come alive again, and we're more hopping than ever, with a jam-packed BR schedule that I just can't keep up with! I can't wait to see how this shakes up the Team Reading Competition for next year!

So I want to say, thank you all for being here! I love our conversations, and I love having this space to geek out over books together. I don't know about you guys, but even if I'm lucky enough to meet a friend IRL who enjoys reading, or even the same books and authors, rarely do we get the chance to share reactions to specific scenes, theorize plot twists in real time, or meme and joke around in the same way. This is a really unique space, and I'm glad to be able to share it with you all. :)

Happy Holidqays!
I'm loving all of the sweet and sentimental messages here. I also appreciate all of the newer member who just jumped right in and infused so much life into this group once again.

I look forward to reading and talking to all of you in 2024!

More of the same... I've been with the group for 6 years now, and been pretty active since the Team Competition Year 1 was announced... training wheels came off, then, and I've been revving ever since...

I love this group, because it's not just like having one book club, but many shared book clubs... you don't have to read every book together, but you can read any that interest you, and build a real group atmosphere... also, in earlier years, it let me join enough sub-groups to fill my reading time... now I have Nirkatze around for 90% of the ride/BRs, it seems :D

This has also been my first full year as a mod... I never thought I'd be a mod, but like everyone else, I love this group so much, and seeing it running smoothly is the best feeling... I don't do social media, I just do Goodreads and idle gaming Discord servers...

Merry Christmas, everyone...

New Spreadsheets should be ready by New Years' Eve...

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

I really can't express how much FBR means to me. <3 This group has been one of the reasons my love of reading has stayed alive, and it's really special to have such a great group of people who come to chat about all the books we love. Whether you've been here for years or just joined recently, I'm so happy this group has grown into what it is today, and I'm excited to read with everyone in the new year!

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Wanna brainstorm a 'Survival/Build' Reading Challenge?

In the BR Recruitment thread, there was a fun off topic thread. Mentions of old chats in FBR about forming your crew and stuff if lost on an island, etc.

My brain ran off in a tangent and thought about a Reading Challenge based on building your own camp/settlement/bunker/enclave/etc.
Maybe a bit like Civilization?

Time Table could be 2024 January to November.

1) 3 Books to Establish Time/Era, Place, Reader Character
Example:
- Time/Era: Beware of Chicken - Historical with Cultivation
- Place: Beware of Chicken 2 - Large Farm in Boonies
- My Character: Farming Space Makes Me Rich - Female Lead has a farming space with a spiritual spring & fertile land. Stuff grown in space are pure, enhanced food/herbs, cleanse body etc. But! It's like beginner level & needs growth & knowledge to

Then other categories like technology, skills, side characters, friends, lovers, buildings, pets, food, etc.

What ya'll think?

Core challenge can be a small list of books/categories like 5. Each person can change it up as they want. Go into as much detail as you feel like it. Add/Subtract as ya want. Should be fun and cool way to share book details.

Example: Life in the North: Build an interdimensional marketplace like in SA.

message 5569: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments I love this, Soo, I made a challenge similar to this one, a while ago.
F.e. Transportation: read a book with a transport vehicle on the cover. (an usual or unusual transport vehicle).
F.e. Food: read a book with disgusting food (your interpretation) in it.
F.e. Skills: what would your favorite skill be as a wizard/hunter...and then read a book with a MC that has this skill.

message 5570: by Rapunzel (new)

Rapunzel I love this, too! Although I'm not entirely sure how it will work, what kind of rules are there? Do I just come up with my own lists of books that represent certain elements? I'm not that well-versed in challenges.

Anyway, I love anything even remotely survival-themed or building civilization/camp from scratch, so I would love to see this going somewhere <3

Soo is big on creating random challenge ideas... I remember all the ones she came up with, the years she did the reading competition...

This group is pretty flexible about challenges... you can create your own thread in the challenge folder to track custom personal challenges, and use it for existing group challenges, or make up your own...

This one seems like a bit of a storytelling challenge, with alot of flexibility...

message 5572: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments There's another group that I'm in, that does a storytelling challenge. it's been going for years now with quests, markets, riding animals, creatures you can attack...all be reading certain books for certain assignements.

message 5573: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Need to see if my Individual Challenge thread is still active. 🙃

If others are doing the the Challenge, I was thinking about how we can play off each other's challenge with like a Settlement Portal or whatnot.

I'd probably link other's challenge in 2nd post for easier navigation.

Either choosing to read a book off a friend's challenge and using it for similar item/idea or using friend's subject and find your own book to fit subject.

message 5575: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments - Roll Call -

Who is interested in the Settlement/Island Reading Challenge?

If there's enough interest, Jenna said we can have our own folder. 😃

Ya'll can help brainstorm what we want as a core part of the challenge and extras can be up to player.

I think base part of the challenge should be 3-10. That way anyone can do it.

Base rules:
- One Book Per Subject (Can't use 1 book for multiple entries.)
- Any Reading Works: Book, Short Story, Novella, Comic, etc
Has to be on Goodreads & linkable
Re-Reads are ok
- Time Frame: Read in 2024
Start of January to End of November

🤔

Decent base to start?

message 5576: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21011 comments I'm in!

I almost feel like this could have a roleplay aspect to it, in a discussion thread in the folder...

message 5577: by Soo (last edited Dec 26, 2023 10:27PM) (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yesssssssss

I recommend we use our GR Names as the player name, but we are essentially creating a Role Play Character, Place, Time--stuff!

It can be as small or complex as ya want.

Guess I have to brainstorm for reals on what kind of RP toon and place I want. 🧐🤔😄

message 5578: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments 🙃🙃🙃

Be a library guardian of like a Dimensional Library in a spot right out of time. Recordings of all books, verbal tales, graphic stories, etc. So like word of mouth stories would be saved as holograms in original language/etc and have either direct translation in your brain or subtitles.

🤣🤣🤣

message 5579: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments So alas I doubt I can do the challenge - but my interest was piqued by the mention of roleplay. The chatter in the Invite thread made me think of some of the silly stories we've made up over the years, and I was thinking of starting a storytelling thread to the purpose. If anything have to create a place to let loose the creative tangents.

I sadly won't be joining the challenge (I have a hard enough time keeping up with one challenge these days), but I totally want to be a dimensional library guardian. That sounds so cool.

Merry New Year... that wonderful time of the year when the website breaks...

Either too many people login with New Years' Resolutions, or they say it's a slow time and perfect for site upgrades/maintenance...

Either way, it's annoying, and I keep failing to load pages...

As someone who's been on goodreads for over a decade, the community on it has helped me through some really rough times. If they close goodreads, sad would be an understatement of what I'll be. Even if I'm not on now as often as back then, knowing that my pocket friends are still there if I need them helps so much.
