I don't think anything new released by Sarah J. Maas this year... all her author page shows is some Graphics Audio and foreign language omnibus releases... next Crescent City is 2024...

message 5452: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments I only voted on two books in the awards, I think it's because I just don't read new releases very often anymore and the ones I do tend to be from an established author/ series that I love. Clearly they're just not that popular.

It's such a shame Benedict Jacka and Jodi Taylor aren't on the list.

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments AIOM was so good, I really think it deserves a spot. I also think it's terrible that The Shadow Cabinet wasn't on the list, probably the best book I've read all year.

Ooh, yes, do! Charlie only just finished a few days ago, so the thread's still pretty lively.

I feel like that's the main difference between me and Nirkatze... I read all these books, and still find time to sleep at least 6-7hrs/night, generally... even if I do wake up a bunch of times...

Mostly because I can listen at work more... and she listens while doing school prep and maybe dealing with insomnia?...

message 5463: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments Yeah, I can’t listen to books at work. At least not new ones and even rereads I find I stop working and just sitting there listening. I do podcasts at work and it’s the only way I can concentrate. Ever since I finished chemo I’m just more tired than I used to be. I need a solid 8 to 9 hours to be functional. So while I do want to increase my numbers, I’ll never pull off you two’s numbers.

You had way to much of a head start to think to pass you but when I checked my comment count I was surprised that it was over 1000 in like a year.

message 5465: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21011 comments I bet a lot of those new comments were just all the new threads made this weekend...

I pretty much am listening if I'm not reading eyebooks or if I'm not actively teaching... not so much insomnia as there just not being enough hours in the day to both sleep and get work done, so sleep gets sacrificed...

I wasn't sure if insomnia was involved or not... my problem is after a certain point, keeping my eyes open becomes difficult, if I'm tired in any way... then I either start dozing through chunks of story, or give up and go to sleep/bed... and immediately become more awake, lol...

I basically sleep in chunky naps... I take a 2-3 (sometimes 4) hour nap when I get home--the one time of day where I let myself sleep until I naturally wake up. Then I get to work. If I'm lucky, I get another 2-3, maybe up to 5 hours of sleep before my alarm goes off...

I actually almost never read in bed... bed is almost exclusively for sleeping, since I don't even head for it until I'm too exhausted to keep working...

My sleep goal is 7 hours nightly and then I take a nap for my lunch break. When I had to go to the office I kept a chair in my car and would go to the side of the building to nap, now I can just hop in bed since we are remote now lol

message 5470: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1651 comments What is this thing called "nap"!?!

I either sleep or don't sleep. I have never been able to nap - not even as a kid when it was forced on me.

I have found that I must go to bed earlier than I used to. Since my birthday, there are nights where I would have been sound asleep a half hour ago (it's 10 PM EST). Since I am still awake, one of two things will happen. I'll ever hit a wall in the next hour, or I won't be able to sleep (which will make work a living hell tomorrow).

It is even worse! I fall asleep pretty much immediately, my sister has been bitter about this her entire life lol I set a timer on my watch for 52 minutes when I get up from my desk for lunch and get at least 50 minutes of sleep and then I get up, make a cup of tea and get an afternoon snack and get back to work! When I worked in the office it was like 45 minutes of sleep so I especially love WFH :)

My favorite job ever was 6am-3pm, if I could get those hours back I would love it but 2hours earlier start time would make a big difference, I am not sure I would like that. Do you get done at 1pm?

12:30pm, yea... I like it... I worked 9pm to 6:30am for most of a decade... 4am to 12:30pm lets me do more things during the day, as needed... working 9pm, I needed to be in bed by 1-3pm, generally... preferably 12-2pm...

That is not too bad. To me the worst shift is second shift, when I was in college I worked overnights at a 24 hour convenience store rather than second shift, that was the worst!

message 5476: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments My work schedule is 7 to 5 with a 2 hour lunch and I love it. However, it I could pick it would be 5 to 3 with a 2 hour lunch. I also work from home and while I have napped during my lunch break when I was sick or slept really bad, it isn’t normal. I wake up from naps all jacked up in my brain so it’s hard to get back into a working mindset. My 2 hours lunches are because I was having weekly doctors appointments but I’m supposed to do chores but I usually end up making my lunch and then watching episodes of Friends.

My husband has to be up by 4 so he goes to bed early, around 8. I usually join him and then sleep until 6 which is a little indulgent. I need to figure that out.

message 5477: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21011 comments I worked a night shift during a summer job once--it was brutal... I have the hardest time sleeping during the day... I also have a hard time making myself go to bed before midnight--not fall asleep, but actually head to bed... feels like I'm leaving the day behind...

I've never worked a night shift before, but I did not do well for the two years I had a split shift working 7am-11am and 5:30pm-9:30pm. Whenever I came home for a nap in the afternoon, the apartment complex's speaker decided it was a great time to advertise that there was a market vendor who came to sell apples in the neighbourhood.

message 5479: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1651 comments I did a 4pm to 1am shift for about 6 months. I also had to get my kids to their bus stop at 6am. It was not fun; I didn’t sleep much.

message 5480: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments The closest I ever got was working the front desk in my college dorm which was also the main switchboard for the whole school. In the weekends all the workers would rotate the shifts and sometimes I’d have to work a midnight to 4 shift and it was horrible. This was pre-cell phone so you had to be there in case there were emergency calls.

I’m such a profound morning person I think a night shift where I’m forced to work in the morning would literally kill me. I need the sun. I wake with the sun. I couldn’t be forced to sleep while the sun was out.

message 5482: by Nyssa (new)

message 5483: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Shaitarn wrote: "Every time I DNF a book, I increase my book challenge total by one. Does anyone else do this, or am I simply an idiot?"

I leave the date & note about why I DNF. That way I know when & why I decided to DNF. Any book I have noted as a DNF, I probably won't try to read it ever again. For books that I want to try later, I just put it back on TBR.

I don't mind it being a part of the book challenge total. It's a story you read. Page count could be the same as short story. We post shorts and novellas. They also count in GR book count.

message 5484: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 5447 comments I count DNFs, I had 4 this year and I read more than 50% for each of them. I want my pain & suffering to count!

Narilka | 5691 comments Shaitarn wrote: "Every time I DNF a book, I increase my book challenge total by one. Does anyone else do this, or am I simply an idiot?"

I did. If I read 50 pages then that's what went in my challenge total since I didn't read the whole book.

message 5486: by Erin (new)

Erin | 385 comments I don't have my DNFs count towards my yearly challenge goal. I made a separate exclusive shelf to put them on and I will note why I DNFed and when and will still write them down in my book journal as a separate list than books read for the year. If I tracked pages read in a year I might include them since those are still pages read but I don't track that.

And same as Soo if I'm DNFing something I still want to read I just put it back on my TBR. Which is rare, but every so often I get one of those

message 5487: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1651 comments I have a DNF-Backburner shelf for books I’m willing to try again later. I’m very much a mood reader so I have to determine if it was the book or me.

message 5488: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments I've both an exclusive DNF and a Come Back to Later shelf for a mood-pause. Admittedly I may never come back to many, or it takes years, but at least I have the distinction that I'm still interested, and if my tastes change significantly, I can always move a book to DNF. ... Come to think of it, I should switch a couple currently-readings to a come-back-to, because it's been ages since I've picked them up. ^_^;;

I log into Goodreads using Chrome/Firefox/Safari from my mobile device... NOT the app... uninstall the app, so it doesn't try and redirect you every time you click a google link...

I leave it in mobile mode, unless I want to change pages in a discussion (since that's buggy on mobile version of browser display)... if you want more visible display space, try a tablet...

That's my advice... altho I still do 90% of my typing from desktop PC at home... I mostly check on notifications/etc from mobile device at work...
