Nirkatze | 21011 comments LOL I really have to wonder, don't folks like, read through the paragraph or chapter before recording, and mark things they need to check? Or emotional moments? Character voice changes? Etc? How do they miss stuff like that?

I really like what Angela Dawe does with the Agatha H / Girl Genius series...

It's a steampunk with mad science and airships and a variety of kid characters from all over Europe, and Jaegermonsters and the like... tons of accents to play with...

Agatha H and the Airship City

Ah. I don't know who requested it; I just remembered seeing a thread for it.

message 5410: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21011 comments I requested it, and I used the form.

A few that missed the list:
Sept 1st: All Systems Red (Murderbot #1) by Martha Wells

Sept 20th Rogue Protocol (Murderbot #3) by Martha Wells

We were going to do them as a book-club read, so had requested just the new one--and then we started not using book-clubs for whole series in one thread, and the mods just made us new threads. So only one got in the form.

Ahhh! Now I remember!
Yes you can do the forms and it will be on the master sheet then I'll add all the links on there. The threads are all made already so you're good to go.

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments I need to rant. I've been on a several month battle to get 3 audio-books, i just want someone to take my money!

I am absolutely desperate to get audio books of the Nadia Stafford trilogy by Kelley Armstrong.

Audible UK doesn't have them so I made an account on audible US and they also said they're not available. I've tried a load of random audiobook websites online and some of them seem to have them when i Google, but when i then visit the website im unable to purchase because they're 'not available'. I even emailed the author's website and asked to purchase direct and got a lovely response basically apologizing but stating they cant sell them to me as Kelley no longer owns the rights to them and the people that do own the rights aren't allowing them to be for sale. Absolute insanity.

If anyone knows of anywhere where I can purchase these I'd be forever grateful if you can send me a link.

Its pretty much impossible for me to read physical books at the moment between working full time and then having the baby when i get home so audio books are my only option and im dying to reread this series.

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments That's one of the links i found on google and when i click it, it says 'We're sorry, we can't find audiobooks that match your query at this time.' Maybe it's because I'm English and it's an American site, something to do with rights?

It defaults to audiobooks.co.uk and wont even let me visit the .com site

That sucks, they are available for me but I am in the US, $24.99 each before tax. I always check there, for some reason the often have audios available that have been pulled from audible, sorry :(

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments Damn, Chirp also gives me 'No results found Sorry! We couldn't find any audiobooks that match your search for “made to be broken”'. I just want to buy them! Saar The Book owl wrote: "It's been going on since a couple of days, but GR is aware of it and is fixing it, apparently."

Sounds like an automated response... most of the best curated content on the internet is a labor of love... anyone doing it as a job is less invested and the quality can vary or decline... look at the hassle the volunteers have been dealing with, as Amazon tries to automate adding all Amazon listings to Goodreads...

Also, things have been going downhill since they got rid of the Feedback Group, so people couldn't "compare notes" (that's how I feel anyway... now all feedback is directed to the Help section of the site, and leaves everyone more isolated)...

They dissolved the Feedback Group shortly after nobody liked the redesign of the website in favor of mobile/one-size-fits-all UI/UX design... bungling the profitles, the series pages, and the book pages to make the book images bigger and hide useful info in out-of-the-way locations... profile stuff in that dropdown menu, series stuff just not visible anymore requiring you to go to the book page, and book page stuff hidden in expandable sections and all the way at the bottom below reviews that don't even load immediately, so you have to keep scrolling as they load...

message 5439: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments Yep, I remember thinking after the redesign how they solicited for feedback, and as I tried to be thoughtful of how it could be improved... Well, those sections hidden all the way at the bottom underneath the reviews could be put into a sidebar, and it's a pain to click to expand everything so just-- okay, so everything would be better by changing it back to the way it was. Yeah...

All you can do is learn and adapt to the dysfunction. :/

Mel | 2360 comments So, uh, are we ready to start a GR Choice Awards thread, because... I have words.

...

And those words are along the lines of: UGH gOdSz! why does it suck so hard I swear it gets worse every year, and since they took away the option to submit nominations we're just stuck with whatever baffling choices they've made.

The one thing I like is the making of a Romantasy section, since Sarah J Maas has won Fantasy the past 3 years in a row, overshadowing the rest of the herd.

But I can't believe they took away other categories like Graphic Novels, and I am Up In Arms that there isn't a SINGLE queer book in the romance section this year. WTF??

Graphic Novels is gone... Poetry is gone... Middle Grade & Children is gone...

I have no idea how they decided what to remove... I checked last year, and those categories got just as many votes as plenty of other categories that not everyone reads...

I also feel like the voting is longer... the winner isn't announced until December 7th... I swear the winner used to be announced around Thanksgiving...

Oh, it's announced already!

Thanksgiving was the first round of votes, semi-finals. The Finals weren't until the first week in December...

On cursory inspection--I've read six of the SF and six of the Fantasy this year--which means they were BRs... and at least 3 books overlap into Debut Novel.

Excited!!

Though yeah, Mel... that's really annoying the way categories keep getting cut... and yet, YA SF/Fantasy is still its own category? And there's a separate category just for Romantasy? Where is the logic in things?

Are there any LGBT in the Romantasy category?
EDIT: I just cursorily read through the blurbs and... nope. Not a one.

There's a few with good LGBT rep & queer romances in Fantasy--but they aren't romance books, just books with a romance plotline...

message 5446: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments Friggin romantasy, tiktok has a lot to answer for hahaha.

But seriously, that is good for the rest of fantasy to stand a chance in its own category!!

Can't believe they've removed those other categories, what the hell.

And I much preferred it when you could write in nominations too.

Yeah, it only shows two max--but I think it changes each time you go to the page...

message 5449: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments Yeah. What y'all said. Multiple categories cut, lack of LGBT rep, I haven't even tried to survey POC characters or authors yet, although I did see a smattering in SFF. I think the romance section is what really set me off, because they are all these cookie-cutter white chick contemporary ones. No historicals even, which is a significant slice of the romance pie.

I'm disappointed Graphic Novels are gone, since that was a category that I could easily binge a bunch quickly to participate in voting. And although I don't read Poetry or Childrens, they seem like such major, staple categories to cut when you also have... Romantasy.

Yeah, the two shelved examples do switch out as you refresh. It would be nice if you could see the full list of which nominations you have on your shelves, without having to click through all the categories... but it's hardly my main gripe in the grand scheme of things.

Who knows, maybe some of it is just sour grapes, because I've read exactly NONE of the books in ANY of the categories. I have 3 of the Fantasy in my TBR, and 7 of the Sci-fi, but overall, I'm not super impressed by the selection.

*shrug* Meh. More time to catch up on Cosy November! Once I finish Half a Soul I may have to jump immediately into System Collapse, I don't know if I have the self-control to reread Network Effect first when it's ready and waiting. *vibrates*

message 5450: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21011 comments Yeah, I can see how having NONE of the books you've enjoyed this year show up on the lists can be really disheartening. Or like, make you lose any shred of faith in the system. Each time Sarah J. Maas wins in a category I feel the same... I was so glad to NOT see her name in anything this year...

On the plus side, once the list narrows down maybe more of your TBR will be on it?
