Really glad to hear this is sitewide and I'm not going crazy.

Learned how to use the "show other editions" link when searching for books in the "add book/author" function. Lots of Russian, French, German, or even just weird omnibus editions showing up top when searching for books, and the actual original publication is like at the bottom of the list.

It's also messing up the "you may take the page numbers from the top three editions on the list" search... top 10 editions are not in my language or are audiobooks... gah!

Sounds like all searching and sorting on the website is EFFED HARD, right now... people have emailed support and been told they're aware, or given excuses about using devices that haven't received an app update in awhile...

There's a dozen threads on the subreddit complaining about glitchy behavior... which is impressive, considering usually the subreddit gets one thread a week it seems like...

I tried visiting help.goodreads.com from the link at the bottom of the site (the main option, since the Feedback Group was disbanded a few years ago), and I get an ERROR, Failed to Login, every time I try... everything is borked... which sucks, since I generally do alot of my spreadsheet maintenance at the start of the month (page counts, GR book links, etc)... and was hoping to catch up on ratings/reviews a bit... but now seems like a terrible time to try...

message 5305: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1651 comments I'm using the website, not the app. I also tried to report it from the help page but couldn't find a way.

Re: The app: I'm not a fan. I really only use it to read my notifications when I'm away from my Mac. It's ridiculous to have a system where you either see spoilers you're not meant to see, or you can't see spoilers at all.

You also can't add books effectively when you use a lot of shelves.

I find it a huge disappointment.

I deleted the app years ago... I use the website too... I just spend 90% of my time in group discussions, so miss the badness, half the time...

The problem is everywhere... author pages aren't showing highest rated books... etc etc etc...

Some people are jumping ship and trying https://thestorygraph.com/

But I've got too much invested in the group discussions here :D

message 5308: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1651 comments Yeah. I'm not ready to leave GR. I am willing to give them time to correct the issues (on the site, that is).
I have no hope for the app.

message 5309: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21011 comments Yeah... storygraph is good for keeping track of books, but it has no social aspect... or didn't, when I first tried it out.

message 5310: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments Same. I really only come to GR for the groups. I have my own spreadsheets for tracking my books.

And the app is terrible. I just use the browser on my phone.

Storygraph is getting better with this aspect. You can buddy read with friends and discuss, and there are going to be book clubs coming soon. So at least there's some progress on that front.

That's good to hear. Maybe someday I'd give it another try...

I'm like Charlie though, I feel pretty invested in GR... and I'm too lazy to juggle two different book sites.

Amazon happened… from what I found when searching last week, Goodreads Librarians have been having a hell of a time keeping GR sorted, when admins allow Amazon bots to just add any book that gets posted on Amazon to Goodreads… all sorts of stuff that doesn’t qualify as a book ends up on here as a result, especially in the comic and graphic novel section… and authors and illustrators/narrators get swapped, etc…

That's a feature that was removed from Audible sometime in the past 5-10 years... that's what I get with a google search... I remember the feature (I honestly kinda found it annoying, but I think you could turn it off)...

Most likely, the functionality broke in one of the updates, and they just scrapped it when fixing it wasn't easy, or something...

Can always just hit rewind yourself... I know Audible lets you control how big/small the rewind and fast forward buttons are in settings, from seconds to minutes to chapters...

If you tap the rewind 30 seconds button before hitting play I think you'll get the effect you're looking for.

I wish I'd been paying attention... Kindle Unlimited went up in price... apparently they announced it months ago, and it went into affect this week...

monthly went from 10/mo to 12/mo... 2 years went from 6/mo to 7.2/mo... so from 144 to 172.66

message 5330: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments I just signed on to Kindle Unlimited because several of my reads coming up are on it. However, in browsing, I don’t see much beyond smut books so I don’t think I’ll keep it for too long. Aside from the buddy read books which I obviously already wanted to read, I see maybe 5 or so other books that interest me. Lots of chick lit and fantasy romance. I’m not against chick lit, per se, but I don’t like smut and it’s difficult to find chick lit that doesn’t include smut. Not a prude but reading intense sex scenes, even just to myself, feels like watching a sex scene in a movie with my parents. I’ll pass.

Yeah, I noticed the price increase. I wasn't happy about it. I'm still keeping it though because I still read quite a lot of books through KU.

I've found a lot of books on KU that aren't smut. I don't like reading that stuff either. I read a lot of mysteries and find a lot of those on KU. I've also found quite a few good fantasy books to read on there that aren't fantasy romance.

There's a lot of good books on there... but they're definitely buried in the avalanche of books... there's millions on offer... me and Tammie read a fair bit of mysteries off there...

I get some decent stuff from the Read & Listen selection... I otherwise have it because you can get cheap audiobooks with whispersync pricing, by checking the book out on KU... it acts like you bought the book and lets you get some books for $2-$7.49

message 5335: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2416 comments @Tammie - I do enjoy mystery. I think I also suffer from not being able to look at the catalogue very well. Seems like when I go to browse I end up just looking at some list of books and half of them aren’t even on KU. It’s annoying.

You might be best off searching for books on Goodreads... if the book is available on Kindle Unlimited, the book page will tell you it's Kindle Unlimited $0.00, instead of showing the full book price...

message 5339: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

I tried buying a new 2 year subscription, 1 minute after buying an audiobook through Amazon/Audible... and my bank rejected it or something... I tried to retry/fix, and the button I'm supposed to use seems to go directly to an error/404.html page... it's not even a redirect, my browser clearly shows that's the URL the button is linked to before I click it... so I guess I'm not resubbing today...

At the moment my subscription expires in September... I really wish I'd remembered to resub months ago, last time I thought about it... even last week, honestly...

Pretty sure most stuff is on KU forever... alot of it is indie authors on Amazon's publishing program... and indie authors in general looking to increase visibility... some bigger name stuff ends up on there, trying to find the perfect balance for profitability... I think those ones are more likely to be early books in series to hook interest... or older content... like I said, there are some hidden gems...

And Goodreads definitely has some lists for KU stuff...

message 5343: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 5949 comments There are several KU lists on Goodreads. Some of them come and go, but others stay on KU, so it might be worth looking at them.

Ah, thank y'all. Sadly, I tend to leave my ipod plugged in and wander the house with my bluetooth shokz headphones, and turn things on and off from the headphone button... but the headphones don't have a 30sec button... so I'd have to keep going back and forth to the ipod... message 5349: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35294 comments Mod
I definitely listen faster than I read... and need some time at a slower speed to acclimatize myself to a new world (first in series, etc)... then I'm generally decent at retaining I think, unless I'm literally reading things in the games I'm playing or guides/chat, instead of just mindlessly making numbers go up...

message 5350: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 5447 comments I am fine reading or listening for the most part but I definitely read faster than I am comfortable listening. If it is a new series with heavy world-building or a lot of characters thrown at you right off the bat I will try to read those but I good to listen for subsequent books in the series.
