I don't like that red number box on any of the notification/email/friend buttons, so I ignore fast...

Same. I very clearly say on my profile that if not in a group together then I won't accept friend requests as I had got up to nearly 400 people at one point from just accepting anyone who looked like a non-bot account and was losing track of updates from people I actually wanted to see. I have deleted quite a few and am sitting at under 300 right now but there is still room to weed out some inactive friend collectors that I don't actually know.

I used to get so many emails from people I had accepted (when I accepted anyone who asked) asking me if I wanted a copy of their book or other random weird messages but since I stopped accepting just anyone my messages are usually from people I actually know and are actually something to look forward to.

I had the same epiphany when I started not seeing updates from people I actually knew because they were buried between the updates of all the randomers.

I'm not sure why people feel the need to build up a massive "friend list" of people they don't know and will probably never make the effort to speak to. Very occasionally I will come across someone I don't know but who reads books I like or they have a BookTube channel I am subscribed to but I just follow them instead of making a friend request.

The thing is, I haven't accepted many randomers, but somehow have people I don't recognize on my friends list... I think it's just people that have drastically changed their profile picture & username, but it could also be a bug I've heard mentioned where sometimes friend requests seem to just auto-accept or accept even when you ignore...

I haven't heard about that bug... interesting... I might keep a closer eye on whether the friend requests I reject actually stay out of my list.

The email page has a "mark all as read" at the top, to make the red number disappear... I don't even open most group newsletters...

message 5113: by Beena (new)

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments @Tammie, ugh gross! I'm glad I've never had guys harass me on here, but probably helps that my profile pic is a bird lol.

@Iain, I've never had spamming randos as well, there was one guy once, who messaged me about his new sci-fi book (he seemed nice enough) and I actually meant to politely decline, but ended up totally forgetting. Lol. Poor guy.

Mine are mainly from peeps who've read a review I've written, or are a friend of a friend and funnily enough do answer my question set up with a genuine answer.

I just have no interest in being friends with people that I haven't interacted with, and probably never will. I like seeing actual friends reviews, updates, seeing what they're reading and want to read cos it actually means something. And I like the random discussions on book updates which is only really fun if you know the person and their tastes etc.

Hahaha, oh bless you Nirkatze!

message 5115: by Beena (new)

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments @Hailee, yeah, I used to have a little section in my about me blurb that I won't friend people unless I've buddy read with them, but I found that people weren't bothering to read it at all! Super annoying, so I've just taken it out and will silently ignore. I don't understand it, cos I love reading people's profiles and seeing how they organise their shelves, if I'm interested in being a friend with them.

message 5116: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21012 comments @Beena--I don't know why I'm surprised that people don't read profiles... but I feel somehow dejected at that thought... almost makes me want to add more to my caveat section in defiance... like "your friend request must have the secret password in it to be accepted. The secret password can be found at the bottom of my profile description. ... The secret password is... blorp!"

message 5117: by Beena (new)

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments Haha! That's actually a good idea Nirkatze!

it's finally caught back up, I think... takes awhile to flush all the late notifications once fixed...

I don't know how much of this is things breaking, and how much is secret GR maintenance... they've responded in the past, saying they do site maintenance at the times of year when the least amount of people use the site... it's just annoying for people like us that use the site multiple times a day...

Yeah its obviously frequently ignored on my profile as well but maybe it reduces a few random pointless requests so I'll keep it, at least for now. It does make me even more reluctant to accept people though coz if you haven't even taken the time read my profile and you don't know me in a group then WHY do you even want to be my friend... the conclusion I draw normally does not encourage me to click accept.

I like it better too. Also, for me, on the keyboard I can do touch typing, whereas on a mobile device it's peck & hunt.

message 5128: by Nirkatze (last edited Mar 05, 2023 06:57PM) (new)

Nirkatze | 21012 comments @Hailee & Mel--y'all are the best blorp folks as far as I'm concerned!

Friend request settings are a little funky though... apparently you can only require a "challenge answer" and not just an answer to your question--so if I set it to "challenge answer" and have the answer be "blorp", then only people who type the one-word "blorp" in the friend request section are actually able to put through a friend request... but they won't be able to answer the other questions of why they want to be my friend and where do we know each other from... I'd like to have both an answer, and a challenge password...

On other conversations--#TeamKeyboard all the way... no thumbs for me... I'm all thumbs in the bad way...

Another good alternative and an independent business is Kenny's Bookshop. Irish shop posting internationally for only €1 shipping.

Pretty much ditto on Ann-Marie here--and when I do read physical books, they pretty much stay at home too, so they don't get all beat up... I use my physical copies to double check my ebook copies and to look pretty on shelves, mostly.

It is I, your humble Timelord, here to bestow you with my humble presence... humbly...

Since I can't seem to shut up around here, I've somehow managed to generate 20,000 comments :D

By comparison, nobody else has hit 10k yet, altho Choko & Siobhan are doing their darnedest, at 8k to 9k each... and I'm sure Nirkatze will be a contender in a few years, with 5k in 17 months...

Most of the other top commenters are founding members/mods (I don't quite count myself in that, since I've only been a mod for a few months now, and joined in late 2017, not mid 2016)...

Here's to the road to 30k comments :D

If I could, I'd have used one of the better wedding vids with the male adult flower girl (where the guy has petals hidden in every pocket and spins all over)...
