There’s been news recently, that some people have a lung protein or something that latches on to covid cells and immobilizes them, which is why some people never seem to get seriously sick from covid, and others do…

Oh geez, Iain, I'm sorry to hear you've been going through that.

I have not had Covid *Knock on Wood*, but I am susceptible to bronchitis and once had it every year for about four years in a row; One of those times, I was on the brink of pneumonia without realizing it. I happened to go to the doctor at the right time.

It's frustrating because I also have year-round allergies, so when I start coughing, it's a game of- is this a cold, allergies, bronchitis, or covid!?!

I hear that, Nyssa… Xyzal, the newer allergy med has been working well for me, for the past year or 2…

Get well soon, Emily. Take care of yourself.
3 weeks ago I had a viral infection, after that a staphylococcus or a streptoccoccus in my toe that went very bad and now I've got the flu. I mean, every year in January/February I get sick...Maybe I need to hide in these months.

I think you need to hibernate, Saar - there's a reason why tortoises live to over 100!

message 5068: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Ditto on the hibernation! I wish I could hibernate the winter months away!

message 5069: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments @Shaitarn: that's actually a good idea! Just a hole in a tree or beneath a stone with lots of books, blankets, tea and cake. After the flu I now have sinusitis and hay fever. **going to look for a hibernation option**

Tortoises hibernate? I didn't know that!!

message 5071: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments Yes, they do and there's actually a difference between hibernation and something similar. I don't know how it's called in English, but you can translate it as 'winter rest'.
Some animals, like tortoises, hedgehogs, bats, hamsters...are having a hibernation. They sleep, their body temperature and breathing is getting very slow. They don't awake, until Mother Nature says it's okay.
Other animals, like bears, badgers, squirrels...are having a 'winter rest'. They don't sleep as deep as hibernating animals, they eat when awake, bodytemperature is dropped only by a few degrees and heartfrequency and breathing are dropping.

message 5073: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35312 comments Mod
Things are taking longer than initially projected, but so far I’m still within my insurance’s hotel budget…

I’ve cleaned, sorted, etc all my stuff… done pretty much as much work/prep as I can… just a matter of waiting to move back in… which is going to be another 10+ days…

They’re still dehumidifying the place (I haven’t seen a full tank in 5-6 days, which is good news)… waiting on parts or a new heater, need to install new insulation & drywall in ceiling (they’re starting to stockpile supplies in my place for that) and resecure/replace parts of the carpets and the remodeling team should start work early to mid next day… been told it’s about 2-3 days of work, and I should be able to move back in next Friday or the Monday after hopefully… which will be 3 weeks from the incident… insurance stipend should run out after 4 weeks, based on my math & the numbers I got from front desk at hotel about costs…

From what maintenance supervisor told me, they’re going to repaint and do all the things they’d do if I was a new tenant moving in for the first time…

message 5074: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35312 comments Mod
Things are taking longer because initial projections were before they removed half the living room ceiling and 1/4 of the insulation… and overbooked remodeling team I think…

message 5075: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35312 comments Mod
Finally saw maintenance installing new insulation/drywall today... Also got voicemail from landlord, extending worst case move back in date from Feb 27 to March 1st... Not too surprising... I've been wondering how the ceiling would have time to be mudded and dried/sealed, since they hadn't started yet and weren't working weekends (considering how long one small square in the bathroom took to dry/mud last year)

message 5076: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Eek, yeah, mud & dry can take a long time, especially in a humid environment... I took the popcorn ceilings down in my house last summer, and we have a fairly dry environment... still took three days for the plaster to dry enough for sanding....

message 5077: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments I would be so stressed out. I can imaging how you must feeling, Iain. It's normal that things take longer than expected, but one wants to be in it's own place. But it seems that everything goes okay with the planning and the works?

message 5078: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

I’m back in my apartment… or I will be… moved half my stuff back in…

They oversold me on what it would look like when I moved back in… but I did another pass with vacuum & swiffer wetmop, and it’s looking good…

It’ll probably take me a few more days to be back to normal, but it’s great to be getting there, light at the end of the tunnel…

After a another bookend long day of moving, I'm mostly setup back in my apartment... looks like I was able to salvage my mattress... YAY for water resistance bed covers... $40 to replace instead of like $400 for a new mattress... good as new...

bought some other knick-knacks to finish out the old things I threw away (like a door mat that had had 1/2 the rubber bits shear off, over the years...

The one big fail of the day happened at the 90% mark, when I was carrying my TV stand vertically and awkwardly... I either took one to few or one too many steps, and fell, and obliterated it... and skimmed my left knee and hurt my left hand a bit... not fun... but at least it was just a wooden TV stand, and not expensive electronics... probably look for a replacement at pawn shop / goodwill / etc...

Now I just need to eat / sleep / go to work in 7hrs...

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Triple dittoing huzzah for back home, Iain! The first time I read your post about that trip & fall I thought it was your TV that took the hit... I've been ignoring randoms since I started joining groups basically (so the past 5 years)... early on, I accepted sometimes...

Now, I mostly want to see ratings/reviews of group friends... if randoms want to see my content, being a follower should be good enough...

I hate when it's men who are obviously on here to collect women friends. I no longer feel guilty about ignoring them either. I've had a couple of ones that harassed me.

For me, it's usually people just spamming randos as a backwards way to try and peddle their book with free book links... or sketchy download sites... I think GR also struggles with bots a bit, as well...

Ann-Marie | 5453 comments I used to be a mod for a large group here on my old profile and I used to think I had to accept friend requests but then I started checking and if they were not in the group it was a pass for me, no time for nonsense lol

I'm not even sure if being in group with me is enough to accept a friend request now... and I've somehow become a low-effort mod in 2 groups (this one and another) in the past 6 months...

The main things that get me to accept friend requests, I think, would be being a fellow mod in group if not already friends, and having done some Buddy Reads together, and wanting to see ratings/reviews at the top of book pages / etc...

Oh I used to mark strangers in group as not a top friend so I didn't see their updates on the main page as well. I believe you do see them at the top when you go to a specific book page but that didn't bug me so much. It can be a lot though, I agree.

Ugh, I'm sorry Tammie. I honestly don't understand people like that.

I'm probably in a similar boat to Iain. If a friend request is from someone brand new to a group with 3 comments, I'll ignore that. I want to have interacted in some way. Or hypothetically they should at least offer some explanation like they read a review they liked... but that never happens.

Do you have a friend request question?... I added the "Why do you want to be friends?" question and it helps... a fair amount of randos write something, some more intelligibly than others... doesn't guarantee I accept, actually mostly helps weed out the bots/author spam...

message 5096: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments Yeah, I do have a question set up actually. Just rechecked it now because I realized that I'm still getting blank requests anyway. Not sure why it doesn't work. *shrug*

The answers don't show up on the app, even if the requester sends one I've noticed.

message 5098: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 5949 comments I get requests where my question isn't answered all the time. I don't use the app much. I get an email that will show the answer, and I can see it on the desktop site. I don't think it's a requirement to answer it, but it should be.

Same here, Tammie. It's so annoying.

I also have a question set up and frequently it doesn't get answered. It's frustrating. I don't use the app, it's awful. I just use the desktop version when I'm on my phone.

Nirkatze | 21019 comments OMG I'm so glad to see this conversation... I sometimes think I'm not the only person who doesn't want a million strangers on my friends list... If I haven't had a good conversation with you here in FBR or in real life, I don't know you, we're not friends, go away please.... you scare me....

But I don't feel comfortable just rejecting them either... sometimes I keep them in limbo for years... just sitting there with an unclaimed friend request...
