How does the river that flows through Ayemenem in 1969 differ from the river in 1992? What is its importance in the lives and histories of the two families and in the twins' childhood?

The river represented a source of joy for the twins as they did set out to play that fateful day but tragedy struck and the river they knew so well became deadly for Sophie Mol. For Ammu and Velutha the river represented sensuality.

Water is something that hides what is below. It can seem like a fun place but the unknown represents danger.
