K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments The only reason I remember it particularly is because I first saw a picture of the little girl without any headline, and thought, "Oh, what a cute little girl, but she needs her hair brushed." Then I saw that she had been beaten to death. The incongruity between my first reaction and the reality is what made it stick for me, I think.

This is the picture I saw (her name was Lisa):

Oh, God. Heartbreaking. And the guy is out of prison, given a rent free apartment and driven from prison in a limo.

I read What Lisa Knew: The Truth and Lies of the Steinberg Case, the one we were all reading as the case unfolded in court. It's not easy going but well worth your time.

Beth Carpenter (emma2009) | 46 comments The story of Lisa Steinberg was sad, but what was even sadder was that the woman who was supposed to 'protect' her didn't do that.
I realize that Hedda Neusbaum was just as much as a victim as Lisa was, but she was an adult and she could have taken Lisa and her younger brother and walked out while Joel Steinberg was not at home.
Maybe she was afraid that the children would be taken from her because it was an illegal adoption, but I would rather have the children taken away and know that they were alive then live with the fact that I didn't do anything to save their lives and that I watched the daughter that I say I loved be murdered.

Oops, I thought I did! Here it is: Turned to Account: The Forms and Functions of Criminal Biography in Late Seventeenth- And Early Eighteenth-Century England
Turned to Account The Forms and Functions of Criminal Biography in Late Seventeenth- And Early Eighteenth-Century England by Lincoln B. Faller

It was in one of his classes that I discovered true crime was an actual genre. The syllabus included both In Cold Blood and The Executioner's Song, among more than a few others. After taking that class I was off and running.

EDIT: Amazon lied. It said this book is newly-published, but the publication date on my copy when it arrived in the mail was 1987 -- a year after I took that true-crime class.
