I finished Brown Girl Dreaming and I just didn’t really get it. I thought some poems were off topic and kind of confusing for the story. It took me forever to get through this book. When I first started reading and she was talking about the time she was born, I thought we might get some really interesting stories but we didn’t. It was disappointing that other than the format there was nothing different about this story from a lot of others. I didn’t learn anything new or even hear anything new in the stories.

I'm so glad you said that about Brown Girl Dreaming! I felt the same way! But, because everyone else seemed to be raving about it, I thought I must have missed something. I just didn't like it that much :/Well, you must read The Cay, then! You can relive the memories of kissing the sea lion ;)
It really is a very good book, also it's short. Give it a try :)
I just finished
Pax by Sara Pennypacker. It was pretty good. Not my favorite, but I think kids in elementary school would probably like it. It has some pretty good lessons in it. It is about a young boy who is separated from his pet fox and is trying to get back to him. Told from the boy's perspective and also from the fox's point of view.
