Oops I mean on June 10 lol. I should stop post so early morning
The green rider thread still says may 1st. Let us know if you need an adjustment. I'm most excited for this one.

Agree Lol!

Please give it a try everyone! the first book is really character driven and slow paced but after that everything only gets better! :)

Yes! I've been meaning to get to this for ages!

I was thinking of doing Malice on audio, but john keating is one of the few narrators I don't care for. He uses weird inflections constantly which makes every other sentence sound like a question. If I join this one, it will be a physical read. :)

But I may be reading it out loud, making every other sentence sound like a question for my own personal amusement ;-)

I am ashamed to admit but this is the truth, I didn't even know they existed until last year and never tried one till now. It is ok if you consider that I heard about something called e-book or kindle only about very very few years back.
I read the old fashion way and though my mother never read for me when I was little I made it a habit to read for my boys and they seem to enjoy it a lot. I keep wondering if it is the same with audio books - like someone reading you a story. when I read i imagine a certain voice for each character and I suppose it's the same for everyone. Are audio books more pleasant that way? I got the feeling from your comments that some of them really put you off from reading a book which is really good just because of the voice of the narrator. So do you recommend them or not?

Not the best voice for this question because I've only read one audiobook, but I think it really depends on the narrator. Some can make a book even better, but yes, some can ruin a book too.

It was a game changer for me. I pretty much like all the audiobooks I read but I tend to get the book (ebook usually) and the audiobook. It helped me to improve the amount of books I read - usually, I am quite tired in the evenings so it helps that to read a ton more!

I keep hearing so many things about this. I want to join too, just going to have to figure out how to shuffle overbooked schedule.

Well, I'm pretty new to teh audiobooks worls, but they often imporove the reading experience. For exemple Red Rising has a great audiobook, the Emperor's blades also was pretty good.
But for exemple the audiobook of Sarker shade of magic was pretty bad. It depends.

Gelisvb, they did switch the narrators for the other two books in the Darker Shades of Magic series. Much better.

The raven boy series with Will Patten is amazing. Also anything by Robin Hobb or Brandon Sanderson is enhanced by audio. I always stop listening if I happen upon a terrible narrator as they can easily ruin a book. My favourite is The narrator for the Matthew Corbett ( Speaks the Nightbird) series.

Hahahaha - do it!!! And if at any point you start to annoy yourself, then you'll know how I feel when that guy reads to me. :P

I started listening to audiobooks a few years ago when I was finishing college and working full time. I didn't have time to read and that made me sad. All of the sudden, I could experience books at work, in the car, while doing chores. Basically it turned reading into an all day activity instead of "when I have time." Then I got an eye strain injury and audiobooks kept me sane.
What I'm saying is - I'm a huge fan of audiobooks! There aren't many I don't like and there are a lot of cases where I think the audio version enhanced the experience. I have a list somewhere of my favs that I'll find for you. I think Jenna also had a topic started where everyone chimed in with their favorites. Kramer and Reading are the best!! :)

Audio when it's done right (and by this I mean when you encounter a voice that works for you - which is a completely personal thing), it can be a great and therefore I think an enhancing experience of the book.
And for me personally, the best thing about reading audio books means I can cram more 'reading time' in my day which I'm really pleased with as I'm a slow reader.
So yes, a definite recommendation from me.
One of my favorite voices so far are Simon Vance (and he's done a TON of books) and Kate Reading. The person who's doing Riyria is also good. Tim whatshisface (I apologize but sleep deprivation temporarily has turned my memory into soup).
Oh man if that narrator sounds like he's putting question marks on every sentence I do not wanna know what the battle scenes and sex scenes would be like...

I think that putting the storytelling voice in the hands of someone else is too risky, and it could lead to a book I would enjoy on my own being ruined. So I'll never listen to an audio-book of a book/series I'm invested in or am pretty sure I'll enjoy. I'll throw on an easier/trashy audio-book if I want to relax, but more recently podcasts have taken over that role so I can't even remember the last audio-book I've listened to.
I take in information much more visually, and am easily put off by a lot of voices, so there is also that. Plus I just enjoy the act of reading so much more and I really don't think you can get a full, personal appreciation of the writing if it's filtered through someone else's interpretation of it. I'll also disregard any review that's based on an audio-book,as I don't think that it's a fair reflection on the book itself. I'd love if Goodreads had a separate section for audio-book reviews!
Probably sounds a bit snobby, but one thing I've learned in my time using Goodreads is that I am really anti-audiobook :p
I can see disregarding negative views based on the audio because it is so narrator dependent but I hope you still consider positive reviews as worthy of your attention. Just because I was doing zen tasks like running a rototiller while listening doesn't mean I wasn't paying attention!

Hehe, oh I know the information's still coming through! And I can still appreciate a good audio-book review, but I don't think of it as a review of the actual book, which is why I'd love to see a separate section. The reviews are still useful to get a sense of the book and the story, but writing style is so important to me and that can just be lost by the narrator.
I'm not looking to discredit any audio-book reviews, just saying that they're a different category in my eyes.
I get you, and I am at the opposite side of the spectrum where if I find a good narrator I try to follow what they narrate.
You may find your audio portfolio increasing post baby despite your best efforts ;)... April right? That's when my oldest kid was born

I was actually thinking I get more from the writing style when listening because the narrators slow things down and really make me take time to appreciate it. I also think it allows more freedom for my brain to analyze the craft of storytelling than when I read it. Maybe you just haven't let yourself listen to the good ones yet. ;)
That said, I do tend to feel more immersed in the book when I'm physically reading it, so maybe that's the difference for me.

@Niki: I'll just respectfully disagree :) I'm also super picky with voices and sounds in general, so one little nuance in the narrator's voice that I don't like just turns me off. But again, this is completely personal preference and I am in no way saying 'audio-books suck and no one should listen to them.'
The point on the separate review section for them though I will stand by as being objectively the better way to do things :p

I understand your view point on audio books. I'm very selective when I listen to them. I also much prefer the experience of sitting down and actually reading the words. I feel like it's a more intimate experience than if I'm listening to someone else tell the story. I also tend to like the way I picture the voices sounding in my own head instead of the way the narrator makes them sound. When I choose to listen to an audio book it's either because I'm going on a road trip and I want something to listen to while I''m driving, or I feel a disconnect with a book and just want to get through it faster, or it's a reread.
