That's a good deal. They are a lot more than that on the UK version.

I read Wizard's First Rule ~15 years ago... I think it was on the display rack at the library... around the time I first tried Wheel of Time (and quit before making it out of the starter town)... I know I finished the book, but I never continued... I'll think about joining closer to the start date you guys decide on...

Sounds good to me. The other group I am reading it with will be starting the 1st book in the series at the beginning of May if you end up having the time.

It interesting that so many people just don't like the Wheel of Time. Maybe because the pace is quite slow, but I quite enjoy that about it. However it did take me one whole year to just read the first two books so there is plenty of time left for me to change my mind :-)

Thank god I'm seeing this comment right now! I thought I was in a reading slump. (have been reading the first book for 7 days now)

Thanks @Hailee :)

Hailee | 2762 comments @Beste Haha you are welcome. Just to make you feel better I can tell you that I started Eye of the World on 3rd of January and finished it on 29th of May. The Great Hunt I started on 8th of July and finished 28th November.

It is a good series in my opinion but I have struggled to read more than a chapter or two at one time (and sometimes wouldn't pick it up at all for a week or so) so I tend to have at least one other book on the go when I am reading a Wheel of Time book so I can take it at a steady pace but still get plenty of reading done.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I'm very hesitant about wizards first rule since I read the first couple of pages and o wasn't really impressed by what was happening and then I heard all about the stuff that happens in his book and I also heard about his philosophies which I don't think I'm a huge fan of

BUT I try not to be discriminative and you should have a go at reading different books (I myself have an interest in reading a few controversial books which I won't name out of fear of deportation 😂😂😂😂😂)so put me down as a maybe

That's interesting to know Ahdam. I've never heard anything about the author on a personal level but then again I haven't looked him up at all. But I do try my best to keep the 'artist' and the 'art' they produce separate if possible. The only exception (so far) being Orson Scott Card. I won't read anything by him or watch any adaptation of his work as I can't bare the idea that any of my money goes to support him and his beliefs in any way.

+1 He's not my only exception, but he is definitely one of them.

message 1859: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I don't think your gonna support him if you pirate the film or something and to be fair as a film student I think it's a huge shame that a good film with a lot of potential won't be continued because of the backlash and the authors views and I believe a few people have read his books and I hope to red his books but you do you and all and I might get some shit for this but card is allowed to say what he can and I'm allowed to say he's wrong.

However I really don't like people who lumps others saying if you like this book then your against homophobia and I've seen a few people have that your with me against me kind of thing and I remember reading a thread where they had problems with orson scott cards name in the final empire for some reason but that people I guess

Out of interest who are your other exceptions?

Other authors I have heard bad things about relate to things like rudeness to fans etc, which although not nice, I do try to separate and I just won't go to signing events if they come up. But if there are others along the line of Scott Card (homophobia, racism and misogyny) I'd like to be aware of them.

Nyssa | 1651 comments I would have to get permission from my friends to link to their reviews discussing the various matters. Plus, I have to leave for work in a but. But here is a quick rundown.

Larry Correia - Politics
Lynn Shepard - Attitude: See Article
Riley Hill - Behavior.

Hailee | 2762 comments That is fine Nyssa, thanks for giving the names. I'll look into them.

message 1864: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments Marion Zimmer Bradley is just about the only author whose books I now wish I didn't have (look up MZB scandal if you don't know what I mean - I don't even want to talk about it). I was never a fan of the Avalon books, but I still have several of the sword and Sorceress anthologies and can't bring myself to part with them.

message 1865: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I don't know maybe I'm just too passive about authors unless the person is absolute garbage then I'd rather see the other side before making my decision maybe I'll run into an author who I cannot bring myself to read

I try to be open as I can and I find it interesting some of you guys have limits so O know there's such a thing as being too open but kind of feel like I stick out a bit right now hahaha

I eventually read Wheel of Time in college... but it was too slow to start for me when I was 10-ish... in college I read the first 6 books in 2-3 months... then I burned out on them for 5 years... then I caught up through book 10 just in time for the Sanderson books to start releasing... then it took me another 3 years from Memory of Light to try Sanderson's original work... and now he's basically my favorite author...

I've seen Larry Correia's blog a little bit, and yea... I like some of his works though... I REALLY liked Hard Magic trilogy... but his Monster Hunter International series was a bit much for me... I finished the first book, but even a long time later, I couldn't make it more than a couple chapters into the second...

Only author I know of that has any controversy around them is Kendall Grey... she published a series of books for easy PNR money:

Strings (Hard Rock Harlots, #1) by Kendall Grey Beats (Hard Rock Harlots, #2) by Kendall Grey Nocturnes (Hard Rock Harlots, #3) by Kendall Grey

Then got mad that it was 10x more successful than her Whale Literature: Letting Go (Just Breathe Ephemera, #1) by Kendall Grey ... and made some blog post about it... didn't go over very well, to say the least... the funny thing is that she has since written more Hard Rock Harlots books...

Oh... there was also the thing last year with Karen Marie Moning defending the return of a convicted sex offender as the narrator for Feversong (Fever, #9) by Karen Marie Moning last year... apparently he couldn't narrate Feverborn (Fever, #8) by Karen Marie Moning because he was in prison...

message 1900: by Hailee (new)

Hailee | 2762 comments I haven't read The Grisha trilogy either. But from what I heard the Six of Crows duology is much better. I still might read the Grisha trilogy at some point but I'm much more excited to re-read Six of Crows!

But yes Siobhan Leigh Bardugo was always clear that although they are set in the same world she wrote the duology so that they could stand on their own (Although there are apparently "Easter eggs" included for those that have read the trilogy.)
