Yeah I don't either anymore and I think you might have misunderstood since I was talking about the tv series instead of the books and people were saying how good it was and how it goes away from the books and this was before I got into books so I was very annoyed that I hadn't started it and even more annoyed when people were talking about it so I just felt bad until I started to not give a shit anymore

Also another main reason I never had interest in the book was because it was famous and I thinks common to people that there are books that you don't want to read because there too famous like harry potter or LOTR and I was just a bit stubborn about it so I chose not to read it for that reason

HOWEVER I do think its time I get into the series so I will definitely be joining in for that since I can be fuck you I've read the books which means I'm better than you to people

Liv, a Song of Ice and Fire is my favourite series and has been for yes 20 years! (Though Malazan is likely to kick it off number one spot). It really cemented my love of fantasy and hooked me right it. Has all the great element I love - loosely based on historical - The War of the Roses, battles, multiple POVs and a world I could get into, several grey characters and fantastic writing. I'm really tempted to join you guys. I've reread A Game of Thrones about 6x. I reread it about 18 months ago in the plan to do a reread, but never carried on past that. Liv, now I'm hopeful you'll love the books.

Ahdam, it wasn't that famous when I read the first book in gasp were you even born ;) in 1996. Part of me kind of hates how famous it became once the show took off. I knew it was already pretty popular then, but the show made it explode. I stopped watching the show from Season 2 trying to avoid spoilers for the ending of the books, but it's difficult. Plus, I think people often compare the two and some find they like the show more and others the books. For me the books always come first. I loved all the books, even though I do know some people struggle with the later books due to pun intended a knotty problem!

Haha I get excited about the series just writing about it.

I know what you mean and your right that it came out before I was born as well but wow 21 years to finish this book granted there are probably books out there that took decades to finish but still.

Also about people comparing books and film/tv series I used to believe that as well but I am doing a film degree and I've met and worked with people who were in that industry and when talking to them about adaptations from books they said that its pointless since books and the visual media is entirely different and cannot be compared because you cant tell a story exactly in a film as a book can because of obvious reasons and I'm glad I was taught that because reading fantasy there is soo much in those books that it would be difficult to adapt into a film (just look at LOTR) and for clarity's sake to make it easier for the audience to understand

I've gone off a bit but this is just my thoughts on the film adaptations of books and how people view them and to be honest it was probably one of the best things I've learnt during my first year but still its yours and everyone else's opinions on what you think is best

Anyway cant wait to delve into that series now thinking about it and just sinking my teeth into it and then just be worried about the authors health like a concerned mother

Way too long to finish a series. But it is what it is. That's my attitude now.

Ahdam, so fantastic you are doing a film degree. It would definitely give you a different perspective and have a much better understanding about adaptations from book to film/TV. Plus being able to treat them as separate from each other. You are right it must be very difficult to decide what to include and what not to include in an adaptation. There would always been that sense that you're never going to please everyone and you do the best job you can to tell a story.

I read other books that have been adapted to movies or TV and it's not bothered me, like The Martian. I think it's just this one series for me, I can't separate the two. Of course if the books had been finished it wouldn't even be an issue for me.

Solseit | 1516 comments Anyone who would be interested in reading The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu?
It appears that is a good fantasy story based on Chinese culture - with gods and magics among other traits.

I am not in a rush to read it, there is so much going on, but this is a book that genuinely interests me and I wonder if anyone else would be drawn to it!

I've just read the blurb and it sounds very interesting and I do need to read more fantasy that's outside the normal European feel to it so I wouldn't mind picking this up and your right there is much going on since the next free space I have is late September early October

Awesome! Now we just need to draw the attention of moderators so we might be able to add this read maybe at the beginning of October.
Would it be possible? I think only two books are out as of right now and it will still give time to anyone else interested to research and, potentially, buy the book on time - and to generate enough hype!

ASOIAF was by far my favorite series by the time book three was published. I read them all early on as well, and thought book three was one of the best fantasy books I ever read. I met him wandering the dealers aisle at the Worldcon in 2001 and had a nice conversation with him.
But, alas poor Mr Martin has far too much on his plate to finish in any near future, and I am concerned that the quality will be there at this point.
At least we are so lucky that there are so many other great fantasy series out there to enjoy.

message 962: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments I'm expecting the answer to be 'no' but would anyone be interesting in reading the Sword-Dancer series by Jennifer Roberson? They're fairly lightweight, classic (as in 'old') S&S stories so wouldn't take up too much time.

I believe they're only available as dead tree books, though - no kindle editions.

Would anyone like to read Blackwing with me? Sometime in the fall. It's getting great reviews and it's a new fantasy author so I want to check it out

Quote:

“The world is a cruel mother, a matron of darkness, selfishness, greed, and misery. For most, their time suckling at her breast is naught but a scramble through stinging, tearing briars before a naked, shameful collapse as the flesh gives out. And yet in the bright eyes of every newborn, there lies a spark, a potential for goodness, the possibility of a life worth living. That spark deserves its chance. And though most of them will turn out to be as worthless as the parents who sired them, while the cruelty of the earth will tell them to release their innocence and join in the drawing of daggers, every now and then one manages to clutch to its beauty and refuses to release it into the dark.”
― Ed McDonald, Blackwing

message 964: by Liam (new)

Liam (leeman729) | 828 comments I would definitely consider it Margret!

Although honestly, I find I'm not really into the "dark, gritty" trend that's become so popular haha. Seems like every new fantasy author is trying to ride that wave, and it just doesn't appeal to me very much. So I can't promise I'd stick with it, but I would give it a try =].

Provided it's written well enough, I can like anything (except romance). Authors should stay true to what fits them best though, and not all authors are well suited for the diabolical

Cough cough... there are 20... yes twenty people on my friends list who've marked Blackwing as to-read. I'm a Mom, the guilt trip is strong with this one... :D

Niki, provided it works for Laura, could you set up the sword dancer buddy read for 11th please? Laura, if you'd rather have another date in September, please say which!

Shall we pick the 11th of every month to read these? Seems best to keep it fairly simple!

Winter starts Dec 21st. My wife's birthday is Dec 18th and I always tell her she has a fall birthday at which point the entire household erupts into why I'm wrong and now Dec is winter. At which point they start with so Christmas is fall? No that's after the 21st and Christmas is a stolen pagan holiday that celebrated the winter solstice on what? yes that's right the 21st of December. It's so wonderful seeing them all united against a common cause even if I am that common cause. :)

I have Kings of the Wyld starting on the 8th, so how about the 6th?
