Nirkatze | 20928 comments A few of us did Strange the Dreamer & Muse of Nightmares last summer, I think? I'd love to stop by and chatter while you read. :) I don't know if you'd want to use/check out our old thread or not... but here it is: (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)

The Forgetting Moon is also on my TBR and others look interesting. Starting to get worried about overbooking myself... but if others chip in to request threads I'll try to haunt...

Similar to this post I made in October, the Mystery Book Club has some plans for 2023 we'd like to share, to see if anyone wants to join us...

The Mystery Book Club was started in 2019 by Elinor... from the beginning, me and Tammie have been the most common Buddy Readers, with Soo & Brian joining us last year, and a few others popping in and out, depending on the book/series...

We mostly read series, but occassionally read some standalones... we also mostly read books from Kindle Unlimited, Hoopla, or Audible Plus, to make it easy to participate (and make sure we get our money's worth from those options)...

In the past, we've read:

The Perfect Roommate -- Standalone
Follow You Home -- Standalone
The Grave Tender -- Standalone
Sometimes I Lie -- Standalone
UnHappenings -- Standalone
Priscilla Pratt Mysteries -- Paranormal Cozy, abandoned
Mercy Kilpatrick Series -- Abandoned
Tradd Street Series -- Abandoned
Shetland Island Series -- Abandoned
Cormoran Strike Series -- Abandoned
Cameron Winter Series -- Abandoned
Fangborn Series -- Finished by Some, Abandoned by Others
Mackenzie and Mackenzie P.I. Series -- Finished trilogy
Barbara Holloway Series -- Finished
Aaron Falk Series -- Up-To-Date
Alex Benedict Series -- Up-To-Date
Cork O'Connor Series -- Abandoned or Up-To-Date with Hoopla Releases
Lady Sherlock -- Up-To-Date
Lady Darby Mysteries -- Up-To-Date
Tracy Crosswhite Series -- Currently Reading, Will Be Up-To-Date by New Years' Eve

Fangs in Fondant (Priscilla Pratt Mystery #1) by Melissa Monroe A Merciful Death (Mercy Kilpatrick, #1) by Kendra Elliot The House on Tradd Street (Tradd Street, #1) by Karen White Raven Black (Shetland Island, #1) by Ann Cleeves The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith When Christmas Comes (Cameron Winter #1) by Andrew Klavan Seven Kinds of Hell (Fangborn, #1) by Dana Cameron Sleuthing for a Living (Mackenzie & Mackenzie P.I. #1) by Jennifer L. Hart Death Qualified (Barbara Holloway #1) by Kate Wilhelm The Dry (Aaron Falk, #1) by Jane Harper A Talent for War (Alex Benedict, #1) by Jack McDevitt Iron Lake (Cork O'Connor, #1) by William Kent Krueger A Study in Scarlet Women (Lady Sherlock, #1) by Sherry Thomas The Anatomist's Wife (Lady Darby Mystery, #1) by Anna Lee Huber My Sister's Grave (Tracy Crosswhite, #1) by Robert Dugoni

In 2022, we started the year by wrapping up Alex Benedict, and were well into the Cork O'Connor series... we also tried Cormoran Strike and Fangborn in February and March, with middling success... by mid-spring Libby access to Cork O'Connor books was drying up, and the luster was fading for others who could continue to read the audiobooks on Hoopla... the replacement series for Alex Benedict was the Lady Darby mystery series on Hoopla... the replacement for the Cork O'Connor series was the Tracy Crosswhite series on Kindle Unlimited Read & Listen... we're aiming to finish those up by the end of the year, so we can start 2023 fresh...

To that end, we're looking to read the Jack Nightingale series (first 3 books on Kindle Read & Listen, Urban Fantasy mystery series involving a deal with the devil made my ancestor), the Verity Kent series on Hoopla (historical mystery series set in the 1920s, same author as Lady Darby), and the Manners & Monsters series on Hoopla (historical fantasy with mystery elements, vampires & werewolves/etc)... this last one, we're picking up from book 3... we each read books 1-2 at various points throughout 2022 and got distracted, so we're turning it into a Buddy Read...

Nightfall (Jack Nightingale, #1) by Stephen Leather This Side of Murder (Verity Kent, #1) by Anna Lee Huber Gossip and Gorgons (Manners and Monsters, #3) by Tilly Wallace

The Mystery Book Club does all it's BRs in the book club thread, with light tracking in the thread title for current series... we read one book in each series each month, generally, unless we really like the series and agree to accelerate... we just announce when we've started the current monthly book in each series, or if we're going to start in the next day or 2, to try and have some concurrent reads, and then we wait until everyone has read the current book in a series before moving to the next in the series...

Anyone is welcome to join us in 2023, for one series or all series listed... once those are finished or abandoned, we'll replace them with other series... we have a spreadsheet listing previous Buddy Reads, New Releases, and future Buddy Read options collected from our previous posts brainstorming ideas, but it's mostly been designed for the 3-4 current participants, at the moment, with some checkpoints for showing interest...

We also plan to Buddy Read the new entries in the series we're up-to-date on:

Exiles -- Aaron Falk #3 -- January 31st
Village in the Sky -- Alex Benedict #9 -- January 31st
A Tempest at Sea -- Lady Sherlock #7 -- March 14th
A Fatal Illusion -- Lady Darby #11 -- June 20th
One Last Kill -- Tracy Crosswhite #10 -- October 3rd

Vagabond is just about getting ready to start the Time Police series--I think they're waiting for me to get caught up with the last two St. Mary's but they don't have to. If you popped over there you'd have several folks join you. :)

Did you see Jodi Taylor's xmas special this year is Time Police?

And ty for the Mystery update Iain--a lot of those look interesting but by golly my brain is exploding from everything I want to read...

With your SF/Fantasy bent, you should check out Alex Benedict... they're historical mysteries in space... like... most/all of the stories are inspired by famous historical mysteries... like ghost ships that disappear for decades and the like... but reimagined in space... Alex Benedict & his partner Chase are like xenoarcheologists... looked down on for being in it for the money, but they kinda keep solving decade-long mysteries and changing the galaxy... their hovercar also gets sabotaged alot XD

Took me awhile to write... we've read a fair bit, in the past 3.5 years... luckily, we recently compiled alot of this info into a spreadsheet, so it was easy to copy and paste some stuff, then add links/details... we've generally read at least 1 book per month, since sometime in 2020, and more like 2-4 per month for the past year or so...

I'm definitely feeling pretty booked for 2023... also looking to read some tome-heavy series like Malazan and Sun Eater...

Choko wrote: "Yeah, Siobhan! Join us to read it in the Vagabond thread!"

It actually might be easier to do it the other way around, and read the Time Police books in the Last Minute BRs thread... I'm 99% sure this is a Siobhan & Charlie idea, and Jodi Taylor has dominated the Last Minute BRs thread for the past year or 2... probably be easier than digging through all our OTHER BR talk, in the Vagabond thread, depending on how often these BRs happen...

It ended up being 4 feet total--two storms came through in the past couple days--and yeah, the city was not prepared... big shame AK... though it apparently broke our record for liquid precipitation both in a month and a year... and we're supposed to have two more storms come through during the week.

re: Aomori--I know!!! I've always wanted to see it--especially that one road in Hakkouda... my students had this article a few weeks ago to read: (https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/k100...) we looked at videos and pictures of snow and talked about why Japanese might have specific words like 雪下ろし (taking snow off a roof) and why articles like this might be necessary--the last paragraph mentions that 1 cubic meter of snow can weigh up to 500kg!!!!--looked at climate maps and stuff... it was a good lesson.

@Choko--yes!! Let's do it!! I'd love to team tag Alex Benedict with you... when we can fit it in!!

@Mel, re: Time Police--separate series thread makes total sense! Anyone volunteering to put in the request? Or maybe Iain will just take care of it for us *wink wink* :)

I just found out that Robertson also published a new trilogy that is linked. It's called the Cycle of the Scour as well. I am trying to figure out which one comes first chronologically. Have you heard of these?

"The Cycle of the Scour is an ongoing fantasy series by Edward W Robertson. The events of the series precede the events of both the Cycle of Arawn and the Cycle of Galand, though by publication order it is the most recent. Scour follows Cally's adventures, unlike Arawn and Galand, which follow Dante and Blays." --- https://cycle-of-arawn.fandom.com/wik...

I'd never heard of the author before you mentioned... I'd say, stick to the original plan / publication order... if he's improved alot as an author, starting new readers on his newest work, then returning to much earlier work, might be jarring and ruin enjoyment... also, some people picked up / already had Cycle of Arawn omnibus purchased/waiting...

I see your point and agree. Are we starting with the Cycle of Arawn "The White Tree"? or the Galand Series which is the "The Red Sea"? I understand that the Galand Series can be read alone.

This is the potential breakdown:
The White Tree (The Cycle of Arawn #1) by Edward W. Robertson
The Great Rift (The Cycle of Arawn #2) by Edward W. Robertson
The Black Star (The Cycle of Arawn #3) by Edward W. Robertson
The Red Sea (The Cycle of Galand #1) by Edward W. Robertson
The Silver Thief (The Cycle of Galand #2) by Edward W. Robertson
The Wound of the World (The Cycle of Galand #3) by Edward W. Robertson
The Light of Life (The Cycle of Galand #4) by Edward W. Robertson
The Spear of Stars (The Cycle of Galand #5) by Edward W. Robertson
What Lies Beyond (The Cycle of Galand #6) by Edward W. Robertson
The Twelve Plagues (The Cycle of Galand #7) by Edward W. Robertson

I'm game for mid-year/June start for Arawn. And considering that the omnibus edition (at least for the first cycle seems to be pretty common, a book-club style thread, maybe by Cycle/series if the initial thread gets unwieldy or has a lot of participants, is a pretty good way to start. :)

@Iain--yes I am a teacher, I just got into the habit a few years back of couching it in general terms due to snarky remarks about free summers, so I don't think I've said anything straight out in FBR honestly...
