Buddy Read Invite (Retired)

@Iain and Choko, I've just had a browse of the book page and synopsis etc, it doesn't look like it's related at all to her other series, it's completely different.
There were attempts, at some point, to have a thread where Book Club people posted what their book club was currently reading (there's generally not much pre-planning, it's just "are you guys ready? let's read the next book today / this week"
Eventually, Niki abandoned it, and said updating the thread titles was good enough, so the BR name appears in notifications. That's how most Book Club threads work, like the Mystery Club & the YA Club... some other clubs don't do it as much (I don't think the Last Minute one does, and Vagabond didn't really have anyone that could edit but Niki, for the past 6 months... Soo made the thread and has been radio silent since around March 23rd)
Chronicles of St. Mary's is a pretty popular series/BR, tho... there was a monthly discussion here 2-3 years ago with Diana and others... Charlie & Siobhan have been reading it in the Last Minute BR thread for the past year and a half, when the mood strikes... and Vagabond has been reading it since June (slower since August and people got busy)...

I have no preference for when we start it, so does anyone have a time to read before/after?

By the way, I was wondering if anyone is interested in reading the In Death series starting with book one, one book a week? And if yes, maybe read it in the Mystery club, or just make a series thread for it? I plan on reading it no matter what, I just prefer reading with buddies:)))

I'd make it's own series thread (not that I'm volunteering to join, I've already read 1-50ish, and don't plan to re-read)... doing in the Mystery thread that frequently might be confusing, and there is some definite character/plot continuity worth discussing as you progress through at least 1-33+...
Maybe I will re-read a couple, but there's no way I'm doing them all again... you ALMOST intrigue me ;)

How about Saturday 17th December as a starting date? That way we should be able to get it finished before Christmas.
Sounds good to me… if I/we like it, maybe we can squeeze in the new 2nd book as well… think it’s to be a trilogy?

Choko, I'm interested in at least starting the In Death series, but don't actually have the books yet. :) As I do paperbacks, do you mind waiting while I get the first few books?

Iron Man In Death Buddy Read Challenge
The idea of this is growing on me, inch by inch... the idea of that title is seeing how long you can maintain 1 book a week before life / other BRs get in the way :D
I really do/did love the early dynamics of the characters, before everything was hyper set in stone, and characters got promotions...

F It... You Crazy S of a B, I'm In!!!... for the Iron Man In Death Buddy Read Challenge ;)
I binged the first 30-40 of these in late 2014, as my intro to audiobooks... pure nostalgia...

It's the longrunning Romantic Suspense series by JD Robb (Nora Roberts)...
Cops solving crimes in 2060/2080... hovercars and autoChefs that make food like star trek and soda in plastic tubes make up most of the tech... otherwise it's basically a slightly futuristic NYC mystery series with a crazy tight timeline (less than 3 years have passed in 50 books)...
Can be a bit formulaic, but I like the characters... there's also 1-2 sex scenes between the MC and her eventual billionaire husband (he should realistically be a trillionaire/quadrillionaire, given his business empire, but the series was started in the 90s, before billionaires got so rich in real life)...
You can probably get some of the books from library/etc... I like the short stories as well... they always have some supernatural element that the junior cop believes in, but the MC is the skeptic...
Starts with Naked in Death

That sounds interesting. I might try it, but I'm not doing the challenge of reading one a week. I'll do one a month if I like it.

Wasn't my idea... I think Choko just didn't want to be reading the series for the next 5 years... JD Robb/Nora Roberts releases a new one every 6 months or so, and a new short story every 3-5 years it seems like... February and September were the release times, last time I was caught up...
Having a thread for it can create a communal area to discuss the series/characters/mysteries, even if most people keep to a slower pace... I don't think the series needs BRs for each book... I read the first couple books on my Kindle, then paused for awhile because I solved the 5th book in like 20-30 pages... it made a great entry to audiobooks tho, when I gave it a second chance... and loved the narration...

If we're going to use my nifty title, I say we just make our own Book Club thread for In Death... not sure when this is all starting, tho, so I'll leave it to Choko to setup... as a participating mod, I can then still edit the title if Choko isn't doing it :)
If we want to have 2 common BR schedules it can be something like
Iron Man In Death Buddy Reading Challenge [Monthly: #2/50, Weekly: #5/50]
(I don't think 50 is an accurate count of the books now, just an example)...

According to Amazon, there are currently 56 titles.

Iain, you know I am terrible at making a thread and organizing it, so I am counting on you:))))
Yeah the last minute nature of most of the book club reads made it impossible to keep even the bookshelf updated accurately. And no one had time to carefully read the bajillion posts in those threads to figure out what was next for each one of them.
I do like the recent idea of notifying people in the buddy read invite thread that a fun series is set to start soon.
Alas, this is one area where I had to let go of my perfectionism and settle for thread heading updates. It was just too labor intensive and ended up rarely accurate, anyway.
Ps, I think it’s cool y’all are getting together a JD Robb read. Sooo many books, which of course I haven’t read yet.

I'd be willing to haunt the Iron Man In Death thread, but don't know if I can keep up... Book Club thread sounds like a good idea. Plus, not sure if I want to buy 50+ audiobooks, and the library only has the first three and the last three... Hoopla doesn't have any.

Don't change anything on my account. I may not even get to it.
Is this thread getting too big?... for some reason GR failed to find either comment on page 146 today, when I clicked from the notification... usually it only does that if the author deleted the comment since posting...

Yeah that was wierd.

That's too soon for me. You all enjoy. I'll catch up later :)

Also, I'm planning on doing a AMAP read of the Goodreads Choice Awards once they pop in November. Anyone interested in joining a Book Club thread for that? I've low-key been pitching the idea for a while, but figure I would officially put it out here.

I just recently read Mexican Gothic, if others are interested I might be a... thread lurker... xD

depends

Yanique made your requested (or Choko requested) BR thread, earlier today...
Have fun, I read the trilogy a few years ago when the 3rd book was coming out, and loved it...

I haven’t forgotten about the In Death thread or making official requests for Heartstrikers/etc in 2023… just been derailed with a cough/cold for most of the past week… hopefully I feel better soon…

@Siobhan
Yeah, as a mood reader I certainly understand wanting to be spontaneous, and saving the mods the headache of last-minute threads, so the thread-title method is a good compromise for visibility. Still, when BRs are planned in advance, I appreciate this kind of cross-posting to here like this and setting up their own threads to make them easily findable. I almost never initiate BRs and prefer to join existing ones, so that extra step makes a difference.
