Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Hoopla and Overdrive/Libby work differently. I think Iain can use either in his area. My county library uses Overdrive and there's just a limit to how many I can borrow (total of 10) at a time. Not a montly credit system.

Yea... with Hoopla, you don't have to wait in line for limited books/materials... instead they just limit the usages, since I think they pay royalties to copyright holders per checkout?

message 6903: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I thought that for all ebooks/audiobooks libraries had a limited number of usages before they had to renew their license to the content?

I think Hoopla is a different model... you can look into it on wikipedia...

Threads requested for Zoth-Avarex, Untold Story, Witchshadow, and Fall of Babel (still hoping Frank joins)

Free Bastards in Vagabond thread, and Spindle Splintered delayed, unless others show interest in joining/early...

And Last Graduate (Scholomance #2), if Niki or anyone is interested in Buddy Reading...

Otherwise, I scheduled that list of 7 pretty quick... good day for BR invites...

Yes Iain, Last Graduate. Can we set a TBD thread and hop on spur if I get my copy this month? I should be able to give you a couple days warning.

I've been MIA for a long time but hoping to be active again this year. I'm torn about what to do about Malazan. I got through the first 100 pages or so of book eight, with the BR where Scott did all the amazing summary notes, but then my reading slump which, thanks in part to COVID, has lasted two years. Talk about a reading slump from hell. Anyway, not sure if I should just pick up where I left off - though I'm worried that I've forgotten too much - or if I should join the new BR and start again. Part of me thinks that a reread would work better after getting all the way through the series once but...like I said, I'm torn. :-/

Yeah, that's always tricky to choose to reread or pick up where you left off. Maybe if you don't want to start over from the beginning you could just reread books 6 and 7?

Also, glad you're back after a long slump! <3 happens to all of us at some point <3

Since I doubt 2022 will be the year I find time for RotE. I'll join in for this. Its less of a commitment than RotE and at least that way I'll be able to say I have read some Hobb 😅

Mel | 2360 comments Veronica! Nice to see you back! I know that feeling, even when it’s just a trilogy, of whether to reread or not, and usually the series gets put on the indefinite backburner.

I’m also in for Wax and Wayne! I don’t know if I will tackle rereading the Era 1 trilogy, but the Era 2 books will be a nice lead up to The Lost Metal. :)

Hailee, be warned that Soldier Son is very different to the RotE series, and a lot of Hobb fans (myself included) don't rate it as highly. Don't let it put you off trying more Hobb in the future if it's not to your taste.

That said, I might do a re-read of it with you; it wiped me out emotionally the first time I read it and it might read differently with some distance.

I wish you all of the best Veronica. Hugs <3 I hope this new year is better for you. And that you find some nice books to cuddle up with whilst drinking some hot tea or something or another ^~^

I know you were a bit in a bind about remembering lore for Malazan. While I haven't read this I had a similar issue with Wheel of Time. Have you ever looked to some booktubers? There's lots of great Youtube or wikia recaps of book series that are a great refresher if you're diving back into a large fantasy series. Just another thought :D

Thanks, Katie. I also took copious notes while doing one of the previous BRs, at least up to the point where I ghosted out (bk 8). It took up a whole spiral and a half! It's very disorganized though. I need to go through and group everything by character, location, etc. The booktube idea is a good one too!

I've been thinking about re-reading the whole Elderlings series this year, so I'd be up for it (I've been in a reading slump for a lot of 2021, and a re-read I know I'll enjoy should help me get back to books).

Then you'll find other ways to stay busy, instead, and still not having reading time :D

Nirkatze | 20930 comments Not sure if this is the thread to ask the question, but here goes!

The past two years, I've had fun trying to read as much of the Goodreads Choice awards as I could in the two weeks leading up to the voting. If I wanted to suggest a BR for all the books at once--a thread where folks could recommend and chat and "oh read this one next" and hide stuff in spoiler tags--how would that work? I've been thinking of trying to do a Hugo or Nebula awards thing too, but haven't done my research proper.

Would anyone be even interested in something like that for November?

I’d say start a thread in the book recommendations folder (I think we still have that one) then maybe link here to send people over. Sounds like a fun idea!
