Elizabeth (fantasynerd365) | 1229 comments Want to say maybe the 10th for book 1? I have the audio of book 1 and wanted to read it after Last Argument of Kings

Save a lot of time for House of chains. If it is your first time through it is a complete change of pace from the previous book. (The second time through i love this book, the first time a bit of a slog).

message 6853: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (fantasynerd365) | 1229 comments It is my first time through Malazan, I feel like I've probably already forgotten a lot from previous books. There is just so much going on in them.

message 6854: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Malazan is one of those books where a reread is almost required because of how large scale it is. There's so much going on in that world.

message 6855: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Ive been wanting to read the newer malazan books.. fall of light and onwards but i feel like i need to reread alot of it. I reread the first 3 recently.. but theyre so dense and take up a lot of my reading time so idk

message 6856: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Same here, I've been meaning to eventually do a reread of the main series in order to go and read all the additional books that have came out. Perhaps we could do a buddy read for all of malazan if enough people are interested?

Timelord Iain | 35226 comments Mod
I've read Gardens of the Moon 3x, I think... the 2nd book twice... the 3rd book once... and haven't made it to book 4+ yet... I keep getting sidetracked by other things...

Basically decided I need to go at my own pace at some point, instead of monthly BRs...

message 6858: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments @Julian I can try for a buddy read towards maybe april? We can wait and see for a bit if others are interested.

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7639 comments Mod
Elizabeth - yes to House of Chains. April perhaps? I need time to get through some physical reads first. I’ve kept decent track off all the things. I will need three months to read it if you’re game lol.

message 6860: by Jason (new)

Jason | 168 comments I am taking the plunge for the New Year and starting Gardens of the moon tomorrow..... Wish me luck.

message 6861: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (fantasynerd365) | 1229 comments I'm good to start that one in April Niki.

message 6862: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I'd be available to start a reread of the malazan series in April as well.

Hope you love it. It is a series that only gets better with each re-read too.

I would hold off on Kharkhanas trilogy since no end of the trilogy is in sight and read it when the third book is on the horizon. I have to read the God is Not Willing Myself. I don't know how I've held myself back all these months.

message 6865: by Jason (new)

Jason | 168 comments 2022 looking like a malazan year

message 6866: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1679 comments I only made it to book 3 of Malazan. I liked it but its a huge commitment. Maybe I'll jump in

message 6867: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments It sounds like there's enough people interested in a read of the malazan series. I'm still new to the group, do the mods create a buddy read thread for it in the upcoming series channel?

message 6868: by Jenna, I'd be free if not for Temper & Edgewalker (new)

Jenna Kathleen (jennakathleen) | 5178 comments Mod
I would also be interested in a Malazan re-read. :)

So generally when we decide on a date, then someone will create a request through this form: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Though since I am probably going to join, once you all decide dates, I can just set it up.

Malazan actually has its own folder here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Since ive read that one at least twice i think i might be able to. What do you think Julian?

message 6873: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I think it's doable starting mid-late January. the first book may be a bit rushed but once we get a cadence going we'll be fine

message 6874: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7639 comments Mod
It took me one year to read the first. Nine months to read the second. Three for the third. One month per might be pushing it but at least you’d be fresh with characters.

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7639 comments Mod
I’m glacial with it though lol.

message 6876: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments The first book is probably the roughest of the bunch, especially for a first time reader who doesn't know what's going on. I think that for most of us it would be a reread right?

Maybe we can set the first one for late January and then adjust the schedule as needed?

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments we can see if that works!

Already got a fair bit of BRs set up with people this month, but I've got a shortlist of other things I want to read this month, as well, and wanted to see if anyone wanted to join me (not really looking to delay into later this year, sorry)(most are pretty short):

The Conjuring of Zoth-Avarex: The Self-Proclaimed Greatest Dragon in the Multiverse -- 7hr audiobook, available on Hoopla
A Spindle Splintered -- 4hr audiobook... seems to be in a similar vein as Wayward Children, in that regard...

Later series books, bit more flexible on timing:

The Last Graduate -- Scholomance #2 (Niki?, anyone?)
The Free Bastards -- Lot Lands #3 (Soo?, anyone?)
Untold Story -- Invisible Library #8 (not until the audio releases, so probably late January / early February) (RachelG?, anyone?)

And, sometime this year:

The Fall of Babel -- Books of Babel #4 (Frank?... the 4th book snuck out on us, should probably read it... we read the first 3 back in 2019)...
Witchshadow -- Witchlands #4 (another series I lost track of, because the releases slowed down... I know I BR'd #3 with some people)

message 6882: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5678 comments @Iain I received Witchshadow for Christmas :) We can buddy read it in Feb or Mar if that sounds good. Either it's own thread or over in Vagabond Treehouse.

Narilka | 5678 comments With The Lost Metal releasing in November, would anyone like BR all of Wax & Wayne in August - November?

message 6884: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Iain, I'm down for Free Bastards and the Fall of Babel.

Need to check if I can get the 1st two you listed. So, those are maybes.

Narilka, I'm in for the Lost Metal. Just need to read the Bands of Mourning before #7 is released. Plenty of time. =)

Works for me...

EDIT: should have said more... Vagabond is fine with me, if it's just us... if other join, I can request a thread around Feb 14th?... that's when they used to release before all the delays started... seems Dennard wrote another trilogy unrelated... I saw it on Hoopla...

It sounds like the people that read the first Mistborn trilogy wanted a break... maybe see if they're up for waiting until August, and reading together?... that's Beena/Paula/etc... Laura/Mayim, too, I think...

I'm thinking Feb/March for Fall of Babel... Petrik's review was horrible, and I remember having problems with book 3... so I want to make sure I have plenty of time for it...

Free Bastards we can do later this month... probably not until the 15th or so, let all the early BRs wind down...

message 6889: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. | 1272 comments @ Timelord Ian - I am on the waitlist at the library for The Untold Story so late January or early February should work well to do a BR.

I also have The Conjuring of Zoth-Avarex: The Self-Proclaimed Greatest Dragon in the Multiverse downloaded and was planning to read it soon. I would be up for a BR on that one as well.

message 6890: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I'd like to get in on Malazan. I've been stuck between books 6 and 7 for several years. Every time I've tried a reread I get through GotM just fine then get slogged in book 2 and quit.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments My library had A Spindle Splintered. It's a 12 week wait. So, will let ya know when that comes in. Heh

Let's BR Free Bastards at Vagabond. I want to read that in the next few weeks.

I'm ok with waiting on Babel. I think the book will be so-so. Hm, I own all the audiobooks. I'll probably buy the audio.

I think book 2 will be out by the time you get book 1... can't remember when it comes out... Vagabond works for Lot Lands

Let's schedule Babel for mid-to-late Feb? I'll say around the 21st...

I'll request Untold Story for Feb 1st for now, and we can adjust if needed...

I'm up to doing Zoth-Avarex in the next few days... just need to borrow from Hoopla early one day... it has daily limits (if you're unaware) to avoid the library running out of credits before the end of the month...

Sounds good to me. I wasn't aware of Hoopla's limits. I tend to use Overdrive at my local library.

Libraries pay for a certain amount of checkouts a month... and can then set daily limits so they don't hit their monthly limits mid-month... users have a monthly limit, but also might need to check things out in the morning to make sure they get in before the library's daily limit is hit... I can checkout 7/month... used to be 5... some libraries have limits of up to 10, I think?

Lost Metal is a no-brainer for me... was also talking about joining for a whole Wax & Wayne re-read, in the Mistborn thread, tho...
