Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely

Hey peeps! I'm wanting to read the Vlad Taltos series The Book of Jhereg by Steven Brust in chronological order (which is kind of fun because it really does bounce around the books quite a bit). It'll be an epic read through the series and I'd like to pace it so that we read it in tandem the whole way (like, let's get to X by this day, and I'll wait if you're not there yet kind of read). I would be hopeful to start next week. Is anyone interested? ^_^
The series is a cool mix of genres - high fantasy setting, small dragon sidekick, but it reads like an urban fantasy and the novels usually each has a mystery that wraps up nicely.

Not sure I want to do a re-read right now, but Vlad Taltos is a great series... read it 2 years ago, with Choko I think, and Soo tagged along towards the end, catching up on the newer books...
I believe there's 4 books left to be written in the series (1 for each of the Great Houses in the fantasy world, and the one already named after the main character Vlad Taltos and The Final Contract, for 19 total)... and the author hasn't gone too long between publishing a book in the series, over the past 30 years...

I might try this.

I'll recommend it... it's kind of a mystery series in a sci-fi/fantasy setting, that feels UF, like Niki said... with a bonded miniature dragon-like familiar... the creature on the cover...

That sounds intriguing to me, plus I've heard about this series for years and know quite a few people who read it and liked it.
I'm really tempted to do a re-read... I really liked the first dozen books, and missed some details in the newest book that had a pretty trippy plotline, now that the disparate sci-fi/fantasy elements are converging around Vlad...
And I still need to read the Khaavren Romances... they're a Three Musketeers spoof written in-world by a character/author with a penchant for implanting himself into his stories... I think (Paarfi?)
EDIT: Yea, Paarfi... just did a search, and Brust released a 6th book in 2020 inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo, in-character... there's also Paarfi-rotica... I remember reading and sharing that, and finding it quite ridiculous...
Here's a quote: (view spoiler)
And here's the link to the several page author fanfic: http://dreamcafe.com/downloads/
EDIT 2: The Paarfi tangent I went off on, isn't what the Vlad Taltos books are like (view spoiler)

I've read the first three Vlad (non-chronological) and they were awesome! LMK Tammy/Iain if you're up for it. :)

I think I've talked myself in... but am confused about what order you're reading in, because you linked an omnibus book that is publication order, I think...
Here's the chronological order from the series page:
The books are numbered in publication order; here is a rough guide to chronological order:
Taltos (1988)
Dragon (1998)
Yendi (1984)
Tiassa, section 1 (2011)
Jhereg (1983)
Teckla (1987)
Phoenix (1990)
Jhegaala (2008)
Athyra (1993)
Orca (1996)
Issola (2001)
Dzur (2006)
Tiassa, section 2 (2011)
Iorich (2010)
Tiassa, section 3 (2011)
It's missing Hawk (2014) and Vallista (2017), but I think they continue the trend of being the same chronologically as published order... most of the time-jumbled books are in the first 6 published books + Jhegaala... Tiassa should also probably just be read at the end where section 3 is listed... it's time-split because it's chronicling the life of an artifact that has passed through many hands over the years... would lose some meaning being read in pieces...

I'm up for it.
Yay! I would like to experience it in chronological order:
1. Jhereg, prologue (1983)
2. Taltos (1988)
3. Dragon, main chapters (1998)
4. Yendi (1984)
5. Dragon, interludes (1998)

9. Phoenix (1990)

11. Athyra (1993)
12. Orca (1996)
13. Issola (2001)
14. Dzur (2006)
15. Tiassa, section 2 (2011)
16. Iorich (2010)
17. Tiassa, section 3 (2011)
18. Vallista (2017)
19. Hawk (2014)
I'll get a thread going. What do you say we get the 1. Jhereg prologue read by monday then decide on pacing then?

Oye, those slumps are rough. I'd love to have you join us! The quickness of the books makes them feel much more manageable.

Sweet! If not lmk and we'll accommodate. I'm more motivated to read it alongside yall than I am to get through it quickly. It'll be a side read for Malazan for me so I'm looking forward to it as a refreshing break from the density.

Prologue is only 15-20 pages I think... quick summary of Vlad's childhood and mercenary beginnings, before getting to the meat of the story... Taltos and Dragon give a better idea of his pre-pinnacle days...

Didn’t we read at least one of them together? I remember complaining how confused I was with all of the unexplained references. I’m hopefully that chronological will be much more satisfying.
I'm not sure all the references are explained... but the big ones are I think... some of the referentialness, I think is just there to give a feeling of a life lived... we'll see on re-read, I guess...

I have the first five books, and would be happy to read them with you. I'll have to bail out after that, though (I'm currently looking for a job so aren't buying any new books at the moment).

No library?... half the buddy reads I do lately, in the mystery book club thread at least, rely on library/e-library app books...
Hoopla, Libby, Overdrive, etc... not sure what apps you have access to in EU, if you're EU... I know some apps are US only, like Hoopla...

No ebook reader. Might be able to find a few of the audiobooks online though...

@slagathor ~ We don't have to start in October if you're overbooked. How would everyone feel about November for Fool Moon? Any specific days that work/don't for people?
Would be glad to have you in as well Timelord and Shaitarn ^~^ Hopefully you can find some means to borrow the other books Shaitarn. I recently discovered YouTube has quite a few audiobooks as well to parose. Pretty sure they have some Jim Butcher ones as well

November would be fine. I'll probably re-read book 1 this month so I'm ready for it. Hopefully by the time we get to book 6 I'll have a job (fingers crossed!).

Depending on how long your eyes can stand it, you can load ebook readers on your phone, or just the elibrary apps and read within... ereaders with eInk and lighting options do more to try and reduce eyestrain, but you also might be able to get audiobooks on the apps... that's primarily what I do...

An older coworker has been listening to Harry Bosch mysteries on Youtube... we talk about them a bit, since he knows I'm a reader/listener and I read the Bosch series about 8-9 years ago...

I did my re-read over the summer... I still haven't read Harrow the Ninth, tho...
So if anyone makes it through Gideon the Ninth and is looking to BR Harrow the Ninth, I'll be here... lurking... waiting... :D

Oof, that's enough. :)

I'll happily read The Way of Shadows and The Steel Remainswith you; I have both these trilogies sitting on my shelves, so can start whenever.

I've been wanting to try Will Wight's books for a while. I would like to buddy read Unsouled with you, but probably not until January.

The Waking Fire (It would be attempt 3, but maybe I finish it now.)
Blood of Elves
She Who Became the Sun
with you, Robb. Only it would be for 2022, if you're up for it.

I'd be interested in the Unsouled series too. Jan/Feb work for me
And Rob, Gideon the Ninth, Traitors blade, We Ride the Storm, and The Blacktoungue Thief are all books I own and need to get too. I could be down for more in your list as well.
I need to read book 2 of a bunch of those: Harrow the Ninth, A Desolation Called Peace, "Swarm and Steel"...
I was waiting for Swarm and Steel to get audio... the rest of Manifest Delusions only got audio over the summer...
Iron Druid chronicles is a great series, until the author ruined the ending in my opinion...
Cradle/Unsouled is a great series...
