Hi, I am getting so sick of reading books with perfect looking heroes and heroines. Any suggestions for romances to read with normal looking people? Or ones where everyone is just super rich and the men are all Lords, but the women impoverished spinsters? I am so sick of that plot line too.

Sweet Lullaby by Lorraine Heath- the hero is kind of unattractive(hero had smallpox as a child) but a good man at heart. He marries the heroine because she got pregnant by her dickhead boyfriend and her dad doesn't want her to marry the boyfriend. Instead, her dad wants her to marry the hero because he works for him and he is a hardworking man. Then the story unfolds and then we learn more about the hero's heartbreaking past and on top of that, the boyfriend comes back. It's a tear jerker so get the tissues ready.
Another one where the hero had smallpox as a child, heroine very plain is the Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. I really liked it because the characters seemed convincingly real and believable (more than just a sketchy character outline) but he is a Lord and she is impoverished...
Oh, another one I've thought of is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Anne Shaffer. Romance is only one of the elements (but it's an important one) and it's just lovely.I'm like you Joanna, I love to read romances but I just long for a bit more variety... I always feel so much more emotionally satisfied when I can get into the main characters' personalities rather than just being told what their hair and eyes are like. Hope you find something new - let me know!

To Ms. Pribble - I have lost your comment. I understand your feelings. I wish you well. Happy reading. I have a book to reccomemend to you and everyone: An Unexpected Grace by Kristin von Kreisler. I haven't read it yet, but its a dog story about a young woman who needs healing - she was a crime victim. It appears to be a bit of romance, too. I bought it at B & N and will read it next. Reading "The Woods" now by Harlan Coban. Good book.
I agree with Joanna. I am sick of watching TV movies where every main female character runs five miles each a.m. and has a perfect figure. Books tend to be that way, too. How tiresome. I never had a perfect figure in my life - and exactly what is perfect? These authors need to express reality a bit. :)

I copied the title of Sweet Lullaby by Lorraine Heath. I will add it to my list of books to buy or get from library in future. I have several stacked up right at the moment. Yes, we should tell some authors that many of their readers do not run each a.m. -- we are not all fans of the tiresome TV reporter and divorcee or widow with one child characters. Can't they think up another female personna? Every single female main character lately is divorced/widowed and has one child. Then they meet a guy who is the romantic interest and they play "keep a way." This plot is over and over.
I dubbed one particular TV channel the "Moron" channel. Guess where I got the M from. Anyway, I predict it: first(lately) graphic sex, then the morder occurs, then the female has to run outdoors, then there is dinner with the guy where no one eats, then the car chase, then the big fire blow up. Then proceed to the end where the perfect figure "runner" woman saves the day and rescues the boyfriend and/or the cop. The new "woman." I do not put this channel on -- my husband does. I read or crossword or make fun of it.
