Lately, I've been feeling the same way. And I used to LOVE big, fat, long books. James Michener being a huge favorite. But lately, not so much.
I do want to get to this one eventually because it is on the PBT 100 so glad it read fast for you and that you liked it.
This book has been on my TBR pile for a while. I have a problem that I tend to not read big books (especially if I'm in reading challenge mode). I'm not sure why because I really love getting immersed into stories, but alas when I see that it will take 27 hours to listen or 24 hours to read I freak out a bit.
This is a long book but it read fairly fast. The book is the first in a trilogy and the set-up is that a chronicler (a writer of stories/histories) comes across an innkeeper, who he believes is the famous wizard/assassin, Kvothe. We aren't really given much of a glimpse of why this man is famous/infamous, but the innkeeper does start telling the chronicler his story from the beginning of his life. He was born into a family of travelling entertainers. They perform in various towns and along the way pick up an artificer who begins to teach Kvothe the ways of sympathy (magic). Things take a turn for the worst and Kvothe ends up living on the streets for several years until he gets a break that allows him to enroll in the university.
This is a tale of adventure and humble beginnings. I definitely enjoyed the character of Kvothe, but there were a few annoying things about him --- first, it seems like there was nothing that he couldn't pick up quickly and second he was a bit naive at times. However, I very much enjoyed his story. Word of warning, this is only a small portion of Kvothe's story. Some further adventures are hinted at as well as some tragedy, but no details. The final book of the trilogy does not even have a publication date, so I'm a bit hesitant to rush out to read the next one. The good news is that it really isn't a cliff-hanger ending.
