Authors with Dates
Good luck! I'm still working through all the BnF/Hachette books which were imported with reversed name order...
And with this kind of authors it is often extra useful to check the similar names function. I did several authors and found for each at least 4/5 extra profiles.
And they can be quite confusing sometimes.E.g.: John F B 1853 Stevens stands for John F. Stevens, born in 1853 (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Fr...), not for John F.B. Stevens
- and, similar to this: John J D 1899 Lalor stands for John J. Lalor, died in 1899 (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Jo...), not for John J.D. Lalor .
And then - sigh - there is those similar to Thomas B 1785 Woolnoth (Thomas Woolnoth, born in 1785 - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_...) and John D 1722 Essay on the Diff Quincy (John Quincy, died in 1722 - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Qu...).
The profiles mentioned here belong to authors that can be found in Wikipedia, but that's not the case for the majority of them...
I worked on 1914 on Friday for two hours. I found duplicate listings for Walter Scott, Andrew Lang, and other well-known authors as well as some I'd never heard of and had to search to find the correct listing for. Usually the dates in the author field are for birth or death dates, but I couldn't figure out how Walter Scott popped up!
Oh...and using Google to look at cover images did help me figure out some of what the authors originally published as. Sometimes Project Gutenburg has cover images but many of their author names are not as published, so I have to be careful going there.

Thanks for spending some time on this. It's one of those projects that is a time sink if you let it.
Some days at the office I have no projects to do and a great fast desktop computer. This is one of the projects I used it for!! And no, the listing was "Sir Walter Scott 1914" and the title was a well-known one. Weird.
Looks like a number of his works were republished in 1914 and 1920. Maybe those dates were significant relative to copyright expiring?
As this project was mentioned in another thread I worked on 1823 and I think it is down to only a few ones which are not my cup of tea as they seem to involve a closer look or more research. Is there any preferred date to work on next? or is it just randomly picking numbers?

Just for information I chose 1866 and will be doing one or two authors once in a while. I will skip organizations like gouvenors and university and states as they are not my cup of tea and will only take care of persons names.
Maybe someone from this thread who worked on similar problems could be of help. I stumbled across a few books where I am lost. I do not want to just delete the numbers, as we already identified that sometimes the letters before or after do have a meaning like born or the names are in mixed order. The books are hebrew I guess and these are the books that I am unable to solve:
Maazor Vitri
Maberet Menaem; 01
There is another one which would probably need someone speaking greece I guess as I am not sure if that is a real author or publisher 200 συγγραφείς
Le Livre de L'Impot Foncier:I am struggeling with arabic authors as I have no experience with them If someone could help with this book it would be great.
Struggeling with Harvard University Class Books. I see a lot of them and I am not sure what to do with them. Examples below: Harvard University Class of 1854
Harvard University Class of 1880
Harvard University Class of 1866
Do they need to be combined with
Harvard University Press ?
I leave them as they are then. That makes two forms of names with numbers in them that I will leave out, as I already found that there are a lot of war diaries, and that was adressed in another thread already: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
In addition I came across an author Ghazzali which I could not find a profile to merge on as I was unsure which one would be the correct one. I found two variants because they have numbers: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
I was not sure if they should be combined with https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... or with https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... or maybe there is another profile to be combined with?
these are some additional Arabic ones I could not solve:'Ali Ibn Ahmad 994-1064 Ibn Hazm
Muammad Ibn Abd Al-Karm 1086 ShahrastnAl Ibn Amad 994-1064 Ibn Azm
Mamd Ibn Umar 1075-1144 Zamakhshar
فخر الدین الطریحی النجفی المتوفی سنة 1085 هجری

Abraham Ben Meir 1092-1167 Ibn Ezra
and an Asian one which I can not solve:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
When these ones and the ones I mentioned under #16 and #28 are solved, then the years 1000 till 1100 should be solved!
Very great Yes there are two Ghazzali one of them is in the 20th century,
Anyway I'll try to do my best and check asap

These are done:
Jan Muhammad Qudsi
Abul 'Ala' Al-Ma'arri
Yusuf Ibn Tahir Al-Khaweie
Ibrahim Ibn Abi Al-Fath Ibn Khafajah
Hibat Allah Ibn Ali Ibn Al-Shajari
Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali
Ahmad Ghazali
These are the remaining:Ibn Hazm Al-Andalusi
Abu Al-Fath Al-Shahrestani
Mahmoud Ibn Umar Az-Zamakhshari (I didn't find an English profile for this one. I found an Arabic)
فخر الدين الطريحي النجفي (No English profile but there is an Arabic one)
Abraham Ben Meir Ibn Ezra (No Arabic Profile)
For the Chinese one this is the only and closest one to him:
Li Qingzhao
The years of birth and death are close but not the same
and as you know the name of his book is not clear so we can compare between the books. So that I didn't merge them
Thanks for the ones you were able to solve. I checked where other issues like these were posted, and posted separate threads there: Chinese one: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
remaining hebrew issues:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I forgot to mention it, while doing 1000-1100 I came across a bug in author names and posted the issue in the bugs section: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Just wanted to mention it in case anyone comes across these strange looking books while working on other years.
Just for mentioning it, while doing 1000-1100 I did not correct authors with numbers that were no dates. There is an awful lot of authors in 1000 and 1001 that seem wrong, but since they are not connected to a year, I understand them as a separate issue. They might as well be correct, just wanted to mention that I did not dig deeper on those.

I merged him with Ali Mubarak
A more general question, which authors with dates should be adressed in this thread? I came across some author who have the current years, like 2017, 2018 and so on in their names. Should they be adressed here as well? It is mostly years and an awful lot of Journals and stuff. Or shall I open a seperate thread in projects?
In addition I came across some I could not solve again: Fl 1110-1161 Nizami 'Aruzi
Fl 1110-1161 Nim 'Arz
Abd Al-Karm Ibn Muammad 1113-1166 Samn
Izz Al-Dn 1160-1233 Al-Lu Ibn Al-Athr

There may be others who appropriately have dates such as London Exhibition 1851.
Thanks a lot, solved 1&2. For 3 the link does not open on my computer, I get a security warning. For 4 I am not aware if there is alreay a profile in the database, if not I am struggeling identifying the last name part of the name, therefore I leave that one for someone more experienced with arabic names.

Moved on in the years from 1100 upwards and here are the finds that I can not solve: وطواط، رشيد الدين محمد بن محمد، ح. 1114-ح. 1182. شواربي، إبراهيم أمين.
Al-Himyari D 1117 Nashwn Ibn Sa'id

Al-Usayn Ibn Masd D 1117? Ma'l Baghaw
'Al Ibn Muammad 1279 O Khzin Al-Baghdd
Abd Allh Ibn Amad D 1310 Nasaf
and this one looks suspicially like a title ending up as an author, but I cannot prove it:

Public domain authors have been imported with dates included with their names. We've probably all been seeing them. If you're interested, you could just put any public domain date in the search box, tick the author radio button, and come up with a list.
Example: 1823
Note there are 23 pages of results!
Some research may be required. Yesterday I saw "French Alice 1850 - 1934" who I suspected was really Alice French. But that turned up the fact that she published under the pseudonym Octave Thanet.
Still, I might always think of this as my French Alice project.
