Jimmie | 302 comments We are finishing up the first week of the discussion of VOID. Thank you for jumping in to discuss this book. Chris has a theory about the direction of the book. Are there any other comments about VOID?

I had 2 theories now I am up to 4 because there is always the dream theme that writers use if they can't come up with a suitable explanation, remember Dallas LOL.

Where is everyone in this discussion. Betsy I am waiting to hear from you and Stephanie must be busy because she usually has comments on the books that are being read.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments You're a bit of a lone wolf at the moment, Chris. I believe Betsy has bowed out, as she was very active in a group discussion on Void in another group. I don't know if Stephanie is reading it.

message 56: by David (last edited Jul 07, 2016 10:07AM) (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments The book was due to go back to full price tomorrow, but I've decided to keep it at the reduced cost for a further week in the hope that some late comers might jump on board.

As a self-published author I need all the readers/reviews/recommendations I can get :-)

message 57: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Hetzel Chris, David is correct. I read VOID last month and participated in one of the BEST discussions ever, thanks to a very active author/participator !! I put a lot into it and got a lot out of it so now I feel satisfied that "I've been there, done that." No need for a repeat. Enjoy!!

Chris | 732 comments Okay David, I didn't see that exact ending coming. Something to that effect though.

Right now I am puzzled on how the book got on my Kindle.

Jimmie | 302 comments Tom, I have posted the GoodReads group that discusses the book VOID:

Stephanie, please let me know if you do note agree to adding the links in this thread from another GoodReads group. I will delete this comment if you do not feel this is adequate.

I'm pleased to note that you found catharsis in the ending, Tom. It was my intention that it would be so. I had various other endings in mind that would nit have promoted the same feelings, but the characters kind of direct what ending feels appropriate to their story.

I hope you found the ending to be a satisfying one, chris. As for how it got onto your kindle: are you perhaps hinting at something supernatural? ;-)

No seriously, I don't buy books anymore or very rarely. I know I didn't but this but I can't figure out when. Should check Amazon too see when I downloaded it.

Answer to your question I liked it and it made sense. I was close but not right on for the ending.

message 66: by Chris (new)

Chris | 732 comments The book has been on my Kindle since March so I do believe I got it free some way or paid $.99 for it. All I can say is that I finished reading the book have to get up all my reviews now.

message 67: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments It was on offer back then for the other group read. Looking forward to your review, Chris. Any questions or comments, feel free :-)

message 68: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda (kristismo-drrhonda) | 32 comments Hello I am having problems being able to open the kindle/Amazon download for Void by David's book for 99 cents. It keeps telling me it is free with unlimited. I do not have the unlimited program. STEPHANIE or whomever I would like to be able to contact the writer and pay him the dollar directly so I could get his download directly. Been trying since you announced the book. Or if anyone knows how to have this unlimited button go away and my one click come back. When I go to Amazon directly it states that I can only use the wish list for kindle requests. I called kindle:Amazon and they aren't even sure what I am talking about.

This is getting frustrating. But the book looks very interesting. Please help.

Thank you very much.

Chris | 732 comments David I at this moment I don't want to comment because not many people have read the book. I associated with Tom because of the things that have happened in the past. Until he was ready to face it. I will say I enjoyed this book more than imperfect strangers.

Fair enough, Chris. Hope you stick around for the rest of the month, then, when we can have some in depth discussion.

Glad you got it sorted, Rhonda. Things are not always as easy as they might be are they. Hope you find it a satisying read now that you have it. :-)

Good to hear, Dominic. Hope it continues throughout the book :-)

message 76: by Chris (new)

Chris | 732 comments Anyone that is reading this book I feel that they will be associate with some part of the book. This book I believe will touch you in some sort of way. I loved the characters and especially the end which you don't usually find much in books now.

message 77: by Jimmie (new)

Jimmie | 302 comments Chris, I feel the same way about the book VOID being touching. I related to this book as well because a family member of mine previously dealt with migraine headaches that affected their memory. I used music therapy and reading as a way to deal with my family members issues. They are doing much better now. When I read the book VOID a few months ago, I immediately gravitated to this book.

message 78: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments A thread in another group recently asked members to name books where they had enjoyed the ending. People struggled to think of books with such a criteria, so it is gratifying to know that you both found the ending of Void to be a good one. Even more gratifying is that you found elements of the book that touched you in a personal way. As a writer I find such a thing very rewarding, so thank you for mentioning it :-)

message 79: by Chris (new)

Chris | 732 comments We;; what I was thinking was about how he blocked out out so much of his life and only had snippets of memory until the very end when his mother explained things to him. If all families were like that we wouldn't have so many dysfunctional ones now. Stop hiding the truth from people because it's not just the person you are hurting you are also hurting yourself.

message 80: by Tom (new)

Tom | 10 comments interested in some of those alternate endings David. But I wouldn't want to lose the effect you created. Like on those DVDs that have outtakes and stuff never really is satisfying.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments Tom wrote: "interested in some of those alternate endings David. But I wouldn't want to lose the effect you created. Like on those DVDs that have outtakes and stuff never really is satisfying."

That is probably because the alternative ending would have been signposted early on in the telling, Tom (ie: small clues that would have pointed towards the final outcome). You can probably guess at what some of the other outcomes could have been, and probably more besides.

message 82: by Chris (last edited Jul 11, 2016 03:04PM) (new)

Chris | 732 comments Well I almost had the ending but not quite. I didn't think of Tom as a bad guy I thought he was some one other than who he was because he did things very well. So glad everything was explained in the final chapters.

message 83: by Jimmie (new)

Jimmie | 302 comments Group, this is a reminder that I will post this week's question later today. So look out for the next question for your chance to win an e-book.

message 84: by Jimmie (new)

Jimmie | 302 comments VOID book reading team, please see this week's question:

Question: What novel does Kaitlyn steal from the coffee shop?

If you have not won an e-book this week, please post your answer to the about question for your chance to win a free e-book.

Read the couple of chapters at the end when his mother is explaining things to him. Or just skim through them.

message 90: by David (last edited Jul 13, 2016 01:25PM) (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments As Chris points out, Rosa, the answer to your question in regard to his sister is spelled out by his mum. If you are referring to the incident on the canal, the answer is not given in the book, as I wanted the reader to decide for themselves based on the evidence of character that is presented. What we don't know is if Tom is aware himself or not. Just as in real life, I believe not every loose end should be tied up (a little bit of mystery attached to the person that keeps us partially guessing even about those closest to us).

What do the readers out there think? Should every loose end be tied up in a novel, or is it OK to leave a few small ones hanging loose?

message 91: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments Dominic wrote: "Great expectations."

Congratulations, Dominic. Message either me or Jimmie with your email and choice of title and I'll send the file on to you.

message 92: by Rosa (new)

Rosa | 17 comments Definitely keep those loose ends loose :) It always adds to the reflection and wonderment. I could have sworn as I read that Tom commented, in his mind, how he didn't tell Penny the entire truth...so I thought it was regarding the incident in the canal. Loose end indeed!

message 93: by David (last edited Jul 14, 2016 12:17AM) (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments I cant be certain, but i think that might have been in regard to knowing he had met her before the gig, or even some other half truth such as not knowing anything about the first nineteen years of his life. Naturally such things are kept purposefully ambiguous in order to let the reader's mind wander down dark avenues which might make them concerned for a characters well being. Done well, I think a reader can be convinced that they had read something which actually is not concretely stated. I know I have done this myself in books I have read, resulting in a search for said incident or statement only to find it was a clever bit of ambiguity that I wrongly steered. These are the elements that catch us at certain points in a book and cause us to reflect with an "of course, that was why that was mentioned" kind of realisation.

It is great fun adding such things into a novel when writing. Often they are inserted at the end, during a second draft.

Dang David while reading the book I can't tell you what scenarios I was coming up with and at one point I thought he was a wanted man.

message 95: by Chris (new)

Chris | 732 comments Hey I like loose ends when finishing a book but not the kind that you keep saying wth what a waste of my time. I liked Tom's character he is the type that down the road maybe you can revive him in a book b/c he was very talented.

I may possibly revisit him in another book. Quite a few people want to know more about mrs Gaskell too.

Told you that I come up with all these scenarios. This book unlike the first I read can have a few sequels I believe. There is so much about Tom and some of the other characters in the book that I would like to know more about 2 you mentioned and how about what his mother went through year after year.
