Are you talking about promoting in groups here on Goodreads? If you find a group that looks like it would be a good fit, read the promo rules before you post anything. And read them thoroughly. Some groups just don't allow promo and if they do, they often have strict rules.

And you've just got to respect that.

Mods get frustrated when authors don't read or blatantly ignore their rules. (Most) groups here aren't meant to be platforms for authors to promote their titles. They're meant for book discussion.
