This summer's Adult Summer Reading Program theme is Exercise Your Mind. This year, I have decided not make it exclusively an online program. Instead, I have created a contest form listing activities to complete before August 16 that you can pick up at the library or download from our website. I will try and include it here under this heading but am not sure whether I can attach the file format so that it comes out correctly.

There are 20 activities to choose from. You can complete any and/or all of them any time between June 15 and August 16. For each 5 activities, you earn a chance in the Grand Prize Drawings and a ticket for 2 free DVDs. If you complete 10 activities, you earn another chance in the drawings as well as a ticket for $5 fine forgiveness. If you complete all 20, you’ll be entered into a special drawing. Submit your form at the Reference Desk any time before August 16 for your tickets and drawing entries.

I will also say that anybody who posts to this online forum during June, July & August will receive 1 chance/month in the prize drawings.

Prizes this year include gift cards to Prestige Diner, Coppola’s, Zita’s and Acme and IHOP. The special drawing is a selection of new books from Random House.

Some of the activities include reading different book genres such as biographies, bestsellers or those translated from another language. Reflecting the theme, you can also check out for example an exercise DVD, a documentary or a craft book. You could also try to download a magazine using Zinio or download an ebook or eaudiobook using Overdrive.

Another option is to attend a library event this summer. There’s lots to choose from including movies, coloring, storytimes & kids’ events, Baseball Discussion and Book Groups and events.

We’ll be featuring events on Tuesdays & Thursdays in July on the Exercise Your Mind theme. As of now, Jennifer Luster of Shop Rite in Chatham will be coming on Tuesday, July 19 @ 7:30PM to talk about cooking with summer produce and herbs. And she’s bringing samples! We’ll also be doing a series of yoga and wellness events including exploring the philosophy behind and health benefits of yoga. Popular NP Rec Yoga instructor Judy Parenti is coming on the 26th @ 7:30 and Shirley Batista will be here as well to talk about the philosophy behind yoga. And the origami artist featured in our display case, Matthew Au will be coming to talk about and demonstrate his work.
