Meagan | 4 comments my shelves are organized first by broad categories like YA v Adult and then from there, within those two categories, it's organized by genre and from there I do my own subcategories like: female sff authors, black contemporary lit, POC sff authors etc. but sometimes I just do what "feels" right to me. like my fiction books about Buffy the vampire slayer are with my non-fiction books about the show.

Tara | 71 comments In my library I have some shelves for my favorite authors (such as Agatha Christie and JRR Tolkien) and the rest organized by genre, alphabetical author and then alphabetical title. I also have a bookcase in my living room for cookbooks, and a small shelf in my kitchen for cocktail books.

Hmmm I can't really add to what has been said. You all have much better systems than I do.

A few years ago I took every book off of every shelf and cleaned. There were old books _ published in the 1930s or before - that needed a good airing. I have three large bookshelves in three different rooms. I measured book heights and found I could fit in four more shelves. I went to the local hardware store with my shelf measurements and they cut boards for me to install.

Now my shelves are by book size so I can fit the maximum number of books in. The books are standing two deep on each shelf. How do I find them? I have good visual memory. I close my eyes and see which shelf the book is on. It usually works.

Well, actually there is a fourth shelf that is 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide, but it is filled to the brim with piano sheet music books, so that doesn't count. Oh and the cookbooks on my kitchen hutch don't count either....wait there is another bookshelf in my daughter's bedroom filled with children's books, and those boxes in the corner from my classroom filled with books. Sigh.

Thank goodness for ebooks. I am out of space on my shelves.

Wreade1872 | 939 comments Not really. I have a few different shelves so i try to keep my favourites on my favourite shelf but that's about it.
Size wise they tend to move in waves starting from big to small then going back to big. Often several times on the same shelf.

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) Yes, I do kinda.

In two of my bookcases( 6 shelves) in the bedroom, I keep all my religion books. In the smaller one, (3 shelves) I keep my multi-volume prayer books. I also have a 5 shelf with most of my cozy mysteries. 6 under-bed boxes of cozies as well

LR 2 sets of 6 shelves, I have a lot of non-fiction, self-help, cookbooks, diet books (diabetic, kidney, etc.). I also have a three shelf one by my "reading" chair, which is mostly books I signed up for in challenges.

In my she shed, I have 47 boxes of books. Civil War history, 1001 books, classics.

No, besides that loose organization, it has no order, they are stacked and some double shelved ( the cozies). The ones in the shed are partly organized by topics.

I would rather read then organize books. I also didn't mention all the audio and e-books, that are even more unorganized.
