I think she didn't have the opportunity to give it to someone she trusted, which made her do the brave thing.

I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. You don't hide evidence down your pants and take it with you to quarantine (even if you have double-bagged it). She would have been stripped of her clothing, given some kind of shower to remove any residue she picked up, then given new clothes. What did she do with the evidence while she was in the shower? Why did she hold on to it for hours before handing it over? This point threw me right out of the story.
