Maggie and Cunningham are prepared for a bomb threat but enter a Hazmat environment. Why do you think he put himself at risk by embracing Mary Louise?

I've already forgotten this scene in any depth....

My impression of Cunningham is that he had a lot more depth than showed on the surface.

I found this to be problematic because we know so little about Cunningham to understand why he chose to put himself at risk. I haven't a clue as to why he did this, even after realizing he was now in a Hazmat environment.
