Chapter 21 to end of the Martine Stover section (view spoiler)[I am wondering where the Holly and Izzy bitchiness is going to go. And what it's all about. Is it just Izzy thinks Holly is crazy and/or feels inferior or is there more to it?! Do they both have a thing about Hodges?!

AT LAST! He's gone to the doctor's. And now I wish I didn't know. Pancreatic cancer. That's not a good one from what I recall from working on the palliative care world.

Scarpelli is dead! And yet another Z. I'm curious about this. Are they writing Z because they are being "told" to by Brady? And if so, is he framing Dr Z or is he doing it so people know it's him at some point? Many serial killers leave something at the scene, it's like they want the notoriety or want the risk of possibly getting caught. Showboating? OR is there a small part of them left which is pointing the police towards who made them do it?! I wonder if we will find out.

Brady section (view spoiler)[My first thought was "OH NO! I don't want to be in this guys head again"! But it's not quite like that. I remember is from the first book and whilst creepy, I liked having his POV told. But now he's too freaky, creepy and fucked up that I didn't want to go there. I was spared. Phew! This book feels creepier than the first two. I know there is a more supernatural element to it. But it's not that. It's Brady's mask. The fact he appears one thing to the outside world, but inside he's something different. It plays in to my weird "people dressed in costumes" phobia - they may look friendly and cuddly but you don't know what lies beneath and can lull you in to a false sense of security.

I'm pleased Brady doesn't remember who brained him. He just assumes Hodges.

Dr Babineau have Brady experimental drugs. He was to be his guinea pig but it appears the tables have turned. He got what was coming to him that's for sure.

I love how Brady's memory works and how it came back. Have any of you heard of memory palaces? They are used in stage shows and in other situations where people want to learn vasts amount of information and be able to recall it. For example, a list of names or objects or the order of cards etc. Each name/object is placed in a room and then a story is formed linking rooms and objects etc. to store it in your mind. Quite often images are used to help recall. Brady's memory and the pictures that he instantly recalled reminded me of these -- one seemed to lead on to the next - all pivotal events which occurred in his life. Interesting the images which came to mind for him.

So it seems he is able to control things with his mind. Telekinesis for one. He also seems to scarily be able to enter people's minds, see through their eyes and into their thoughts. I think he is able to do this when people enter a trance-like state generally. The nurse was having a seizure, the janitor was engrossed in the mopping staring at the lines on the floor he was making with the mop. I might be wrong about this though - not the ability, but the trance state susceptibility. It makes sense though to me. Some people seem stronger and able to hold him back.

I'm again reminded of Dr Sleep and how the young girl (view spoiler)[was able to build barriers in her mind to build walls/barriers in her mind to stop that woman from entering her head. (hide spoiler)]

On to Blackish section now (view spoiler)[And now it's starting to get tense. I couldn't believe Barbara had one of the Zappitts. I hope the boy who saved her is ok. The old is going to be back together and day.

Dr Babineau is losing it. And there is another guy involved. Dobson?! I think that's the guy. Z-man, Brady is calling him. It would seem that Hodges should know him.

I think we're roughly at the same spot. Though I'm not entirely sure. The sample of the book doesn't list the table of contents. I'm at chapter 26 of some section - Blackish perhaps?

To top it all off, when I went to listen to the audiobook to find out where I was, the position wasn't where I left off. It was about 3 hours earlier. Even the bookmark was wrong! Weird.

I think it's safe to say - Holly has just called Hodges and sent him to see Barbara's friend.

She's not a good detective because she won't look beyond the obvious. Izzy, like many people in Holly's past, think her crazy. Perhaps that's why Holly doesn't trust her. (hide spoiler)]

There certainly seems to be a supernatural element, but (view spoiler)[ is it possible that Brady is able to induce a hypnotic condition through the game consoles? He could connect to them with a G3 connection. He's completely lucid and able to speak. I was almost hypnotised when Dr Babineau was explaining the game to Scarpetti. Watching the fish moving left to right, then a blue flash. Brady was a computer genius and had already invented some sophisticated gadgets that remotely bypassed a car's security system and unlocked the car. I'm thinking the Mercedes is going to come into play again before this is all over.

I had to chuckle with the fish game. It sounds like the fish game IPad has for cats.

Still, he does seem to telepathically connect with objects and people when they are in a semi-unconscious state. (hide spoiler)]

Barbara - (view spoiler)[ I'm so glad that she just sustained a fracture and wasn't killed. But, she's pretty confused. It's great that Holly is able to help her, having been suicidal herself. I can't help but be worried that Hodges isn't done with Barbara yet, and I'm nervous that she's in the same hospital as Brady. Her friend apparently has a Zappitt. (hide spoiler)]

Brady seems to use a mix of hypnoses anf a slight epileptic state to get peoples guards down. Remember back whrn the last twilight film came out a bunch of people were having seizures at the theater during a birthing scene or something. Was same thing a strobe like flashing at that point. There were a lot of incidents though. I wonder is it the end of watch because Hodges is going to die, Brady will die so he doesn't have to be watched or a completely different reason. Although it hasn't been said precisely there was a part which hinted that Brady sonehow is to blame for Hodges cancer altbough I fon't know how or if it is even possible. (hide spoiler)]

Things are intense now where I'm at. Brady is "free". I hope that's not a spoiler. (view spoiler)[ I'm worried about Hodges. He made a comment about promising to do something, and there was foreshadowing that said that he wouldn't do it... can't quite remember what it was he promised to do. So what is going to happen?

What is happening with the repeater? So even though Hodges watched the fishes and only slightly became entranced, has something been implanted so that when the repeater activates, something awful happens?

Brady's influence is so insidious. Nobody is going to believe it's him since it seems like he's killed his body. He's going to be free to wreck havoc wherever he wants, take over someone else's body, and away he goes.

It's kind of amazing that his consciousness will survive the death of his body. Too bad it wasn't lights out completely when the body dies.

I'm still worried about Barbara. I was so sure he was going back to the hospital to complete the job. Instead, he went and killed his body. (hide spoiler)]

Re Hodges illness and our theories on that (I'm still in Badconcert.fom) (view spoiler)[Brady mentions at some point that he has fantasized about shouting Hodges in the gut numerous times. I wonder if Brady's new skillset means that these thoughts about it have manifested something in Hodges stomach. I.e. the cancer. I wonder if once brady is gone, his influence is gone too and Hodges makes a recovery?! Iguess we will have to wait and see. (hide spoiler)]

I feel a bit better with the hypnosis part now. I've got it straight in my head. So now I'm going to try and explain it. (view spoiler)[Starting with the zappit console. The game with the music, the colours and the movement of the fish induces a relaxed state in those who watch it. This is a very natural, non sinister phenomenon. Also known as a common everyday trance. We all enter these states when we read a book, watch a film, drive a car. When in these states we are able to concentrate easily, are able to take on information and learn, and remember things for future use. We are also more open to suggestion. Nothing supernatural there. Hypnosis takes the common everyday trance a step further. Brady has done this with the addition of the numbers and the repetition of the movements and the focus on the pink fish in particular. Then the sinister bit comes as he enters the game and the supernatural part as he enters the person's mind.

As a hypnotist, i can't make anybody do anything they don't want to do. Their subconscious would just reject the idea. So for example, i couldn't make a law abiding citizen go and commit a crime (i wouldn't do this anyway but an example from my theurapeatuc work would be that i can't make someone stop smoking if they don't actually want to give up). If Brady was just to tell them to commit suicide, they wouldn't because it doesn't fit with how they feel. But because brady can get in their mind and see their thoughts he can have a devastating effect. He is exploiting their weaknesses, insecurities and existing issues. By just taking those thoughts a stage further and ramping up their emotions it means that when he does suggest suicide, it doesn't feel a million miles off where they are at, it feels like a natural progression, and therefore they go through with it. If there was some restistance at one level or another, it doesn't matter because brady also has control of their body and can ensure they carry it out. I hope all that makes sense. I just needed to get it out of my head now I've reasoned things. Now I have and open reflection, i think King has done his homework on the subject. Obviously he's added a whole new, scary level to it which we all expect from him.

Unfinished business(view spoiler)[so not only is he killing off those he just injured at the city centre massacre but also wants to get as many of the kids from the concert that escaped when his bomb plot was foiled. He has been working had. Brooks, Freddi and Babineau are working with him. Freddi seems the only one who wasn't under his control. She was also pretty quick to realise that brady has hijacked Babineau and Brooks. Brady is killing them all off now and it would seem that brady has taken full control of babineau. He is indeed loose! This can't be good. (hide spoiler)]

Apart from mention of a woodchuck right at the beginning which King also seems to be obsessed with (they featured in Under the Dome at the beginning). But that's not really a connection to another book just one of his thibgs, like hypnosis and cars.

I can't believe Izzy's reaction to the crime scene at the Babineau house. Library Al has revealed quite a lot more information than I bet Brady wanted. At least Pete is making connections though.

I didn't realize how big a role Freddie played in the whole thing. She was smart enough to figure out what was going on but ignored it. There seems to be a lot of that in the book - Izzie, Freddie, and people who don't take care of their physical & mental health.

Something else I just realized - the women's names tend to end in the ie or y... Izzie, Freddie, Holly. (hide spoiler)]

Head and Skins - (view spoiler)[ Finally Izzy came to her senses. I like that Hodges yelled at her.

That lodge was pretty scuzzy. To think what those "fine upstanding" doctors got up to out there. Night goggles! Imagine.

I kind of figured that Jerome was going to come to the rescue. I was a bit worried that Brady was going to be the victor, or would escape to another host. A very fitting end for him. (hide spoiler)]

After - (view spoiler)[ I cried. But it was "end of watch" and we sort of knew it right from the beginning. Holly has really grown and she's found the strength to carry on, hiring Pete and going to the movies with Jerome. But, I cried. (hide spoiler)]

Author's note- (view spoiler)[ I really liked that he talked about the seriousness of teen suicide, and that the 1-800 number in the book is the actual number to the Suicide Prevention Line in the United States. I hope that this book saves someone's life because of it. And I'm crying again! Stephen King can wring those tears out of me so easily. (hide spoiler)]

Here are my final thoughts on the last couple parts through to end. (view spoiler)[I loved Hodges' musings on the remote control for his TV "The zapper, he thinks, looking at it. That's what everyone calls these things. Quite the inventikn, when you stop to think of it. You can access hundreds of different channels by remote control. Never even have to get up. As if you're inside the television instead of in your chair. Or in both places at the same time. Sort of a miracle, really." Totally sums up the zappit and Brady.

I was thinking and hoping that if Brady died, his mind would be dead too. But no! I couldn't believe he killed off his own body. Well I'm not being as he's the suicide prince but it's so risky. As Kristie said, stuck in the Drs body. I was worried that they'd all stop investigating and brady would be free to carry out his plot unhindered. It would be a tough thing to explain to the police and courts. But they got around it.

I was then concerned at the end with the final showdown that he might try to jump into someone else. Luckily that didn't happen. Or as far as we know anyway ;-)

Another thing which annohed me was that King mentioned when people lie, they look up to the left afterwards. This is a myth. It's often called a tell or a show. Many people have something mainly because they are afraid they'll get caught out, feel guilty about lying or are uncomfortable with the lie. However those with no conscience are going to have no issue with lying and are far less likely to give anything away. Not because they've learned to supress the tell. I vaguely recall that looking up the the left accesses imagined stuff as opposed to real stuff which is why it's confused with lying. However memory is a funny thing. We have the ability to create false memories which i know I've talked about in other buddy/group reads. If someone had created a false memory and were asked about it, they would not look up to the left even though what they are talking about didn't actually happen (some might say a lie). They believe it did and therefore no tell occurs.

Another hypno issue is that Hodges mentions witnessing witnesses being hypnotised for better memory recall in cases. This is not allowed and any information obtained through hypno cannot be used as evidence in a court of law. There is a death row case in the States at present which has been halted due to a witness having hypno performed on her by a police officer. There were other factors involved but it is quite interesting nonetheless. I guess this case shows it did used to be done but not anymore. But Hidges was a cop for many years so perhaps he witnessed it early in his career.

The scene at the hunting lodge was tense. Holly down, Hodges incapacitated. I thought too that Brady might triumph. Especially when Hodges started loking at the zappitt. I have to say i didn't expect Jerome to be the saviour. When the snow plough turned up i thought it might be the gadave guys or the cops. I think it was a fitting end for brady. Ran over by something and then killed himself. Hidges mentions almost feeling sorry for him if he hadn't been a mass murderer and i have to qgree with him. Part of me felt for him.

I was so sad that hodges died. I had hoped that his illness would go when brady died. Hoped there had been a connection. But no. But i think it was a the only ending it could be really. End of Watch after all.

I would love to see more of Holly. I Holly series of detective tales would be quite cool i reckon. I will miss these guys.

Sarah, I enjoyed reading your thoughts about the "tell" when someone is lying. I noticed that the book mentioned it several times and thought that perhaps it was a bit unnecessary. Once would have been sufficient.

You got the impression that she was growing on him and he was starting to like her. I kind of got the feeling that he would have a similar relationship with her to what Bill had in the future, though without the history and depth.

I was also glad that Izzy came around a bit and turned out to not be a completely terrible person.

I hope if there is ever a spin-off with Holly that he doesn't make Brady come back. That would be disappointing.

With regards to suicide stats (view spoiler)[i really find it fascinating how a wave of suicide can occur. A while back there was a a number of teenagers hanging themselves. I think they were all quite local to each other too. Hanging i believe is less common here now than it used to be back in the day. I'm pretty sure overdoses and cutting wrists are at the top in the UK but I'd have to check. I know brady mean ions the suicide methods in "popularity" for the states and gunshot to the head was number one which makes sense given the fact you can carry in the US. But as you can't here, it's much lower down the list.

I think i mentioned the train incident i was in a few weeks back where a person stepped in front of the train i was on. There was another one last week (luckily i wasn't there), also in close proximity to the other one. This time it was on the platform of a busy station during school holidays so you can imagine how horrific it was for everyone on the platforms waiting for their trains. Anyway, the last few times I've caught the trains, there have been stalls set up on a couple platforms ran by The Samaritans which is good.

So i checked the net and i was way off. Apparently hanging/strangulation is the most common method of suicide followed by poisoning/overdose here in the UK.

I couldn't find statistics for Canada, but I would image they are similar to the US which lists gun shot as the most common method.

I'm not surprised that overdoses are common. It seems an easy way to go. Taking some pills versus something more violent. The same with guns. At least it's quick. Some of the others seem like they'd be really difficult to complete. So sad.

Everyone I know used a gun except my great granma she hing herself in tge attic. The few people who tried pills either get sick or call for help before ot was too late. Amd I know entirely too many people qho have tried or succeeded with suicide. No wonder the nimber is advertised all the time. Freaking epidemic around here. But high unemployment anf long winters give us a very high depression rate in this area

That's awful, Travis. Sorry to hear that you know so many people that have attempted suicide. That's the good thing about pills though, people can call for help after changing their minds.

I found a website that lists HOW to do it and the results of what may happen if you fail. Amazing.

What is scary, is I know people who have committed suicide using just about all the methods listed. Unfortunately, we have a very high suicide rate here as well.
