Japanese for work - so many words, so little time! :)

Kazen

We're coming down to crunch time - a little over a week left in the Olympics!

I've been looking through the spreadsheet and would like to check in with you guys to see how you're doing. We still have some holes to fill - some of them required books. It may be possible to shift things around, so if you don't think you'll be able to finish a book in the next week let us know. I'd especially like to hear from:

Kate - I have you down for Music for Wartime Stories in the Event 1 relay and The Winner's Curse in Event 5, Chariot. You also need a book to go towards Event 2, Page Jumping. You've already finished a book for Event 1 so we might be able to find someone to cover that Music book if you haven't started it yet. Almost any book can go towards Page Jumping, but Chariot needs to have a knife/dagger on the cover. Let us know where you're at.

Karin - I have you down for Angels Burning for Event 1 Relay... from your profile you were 60% done four days ago, so I hope it's nearly complete now! :) You're also down for Plain Truth for Event 5, Chariot (required book) and need something to go towards Page Jumping. Let us know what you've been up to.

Sam - Once you finish To Kill a Mockingbird you'll have your required books done, yea! I know you've been traveling... were you able to finish it on the plane by any chance?

Tori - Golden Son is your last required book, for Chariot. How's it going?

Riah - Finishing Tortilla Flat for Page Jumping will be your last required task. Do you think you'll finish soon?

There are also some tasks that have books that would be harder to switch out - many of you are currently reading them but I'd just like to mention them here so we're all on the same page. :)

Pragya, Caly, and Lory, you all have books in for Distance (Second Chance Summer, Bronze, and A Study in Silks, respectively). Read on!

Margaret, Rose, and Kazen (eep!), you are down for Fight Club Sprints. Read on, and quickly!

Finishing all the required tasks will open up bonus and/or supplemental books for us, so I'd like to wrap up these tasks as soon as possible. If you weren't named in this post keep doing what you're doing, and read like the wind, everyone!

Hi Kazan-

I'm still at 60% on Angels Burning - I just updated that this morning. I should finish up by Friday. I can start Plain Truth next but it's a little lengthy - I don't know if I'll be able to fit in another one over the next week - should I look to swap something out?

message 1505: by Kazen (last edited Jul 13, 2016 07:17PM) (new)

Kazen Karin - thanks for checking in so quickly! Keep going on Angels Burning and let us know when you're done. You can swap Plain Truth out with another (shorter?) book, but it would need to have a open landscape on the cover. Luckily any book at all over 100 pages works for Page Jumping so you could read something short for that.

I'll be able to give a more definite answer about other kinds of swaps once more people check in, so watch this space and read on!

Ah, of course. :)

BTW - I did Omni-sack: D - Welcome 10 new members to the group, and sent it in. I think we're banking this one for future events..? There's still one left if anyone wants to join a buddy read, haha. Like we don't have enough reading planned, right? :D :D

message 1507: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Ray - that's awesome, nice work! There must be a reward or two in there worth banking in case we can use it in the future (no guarantee, though).

Aw. Hit up a thrift store and grab some adult books to put in! Then wait a couple weeks and see if other people have taken some adult books and added others. :) Or maybe the caretakers will edit them out... did the sign say anything about it being just for kids books?

No it doesn't say that, but maybe I'll take a few children's books and give them to my nephew and put a few young adult books in there just in case.

Thanks Kazen! I didn't want to DNF Jagger since I've never DNF-ed a book till date (I'm waiting to see what finally breaks that chain LOL). I'll do visibly broken (since I got it from Netgalley) but I want to do Come (The Fight Club #1) by Becca Jameson by Becca Jameson first. (hero's a MMA fighter but I'm not sure if it'll qualify for coaching; if not it could go towards PJ or Wheel).

Kazen Oh! I forgot to mention - we're good to go with the Page Jumping bonus round, which we got with one of our Omni-sack bonuses. The spreadsheet has been updated with the new rounds.

message 1538: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments The coaching spots...do we need those for points? Do we have to finish those?

message 1539: by Kazen (last edited Jul 14, 2016 05:49AM) (new)

Kazen The coaching spots are not required but supplemental. Reading them gets us nice points, though. :)

To finish the "main" part of the challenge we need to:

- Finish the last two Event One relay books
- Finish Event Two Page Jumping (Heats 1 and 2) with at least one book from every team member
- Finish the last two Event Three Distance books
- Finish the Event Four sprints
- Finish the last four Event Five Chariot books

We have opened up the bonus rounds of PJ early so they can be worked on, too. Once Chariot is done the supplemental books for that open, which are a hefty 15 points each. Look at the spreadsheet for a more through book by book breakdown. :)

Heading home to better internet so let me know what i can read next to help us finish the Olympics.

Lory | 629 comments Completion Post!A Study in Silks

Event 3 round 4. If Caly is done with her book, that is our first event finished!

This book took a little to get into, but about halfway through I was really enthralled.

The next book I would like to read is 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover which has 244 pages for the ebook, which should work for page jumping normal or bonus.

And, if we get all 10 of them, that 15 pts goes up to (an average of) 20 pts each when the 50 bonus pts kick it!!! Definitely the biggest bang for our books, haha. :)

NICE! We should try to get some 501 - 700 page books for this, dontcha think? They get more points and the bonus for finishing Heat 4 is more than for Heat 3!

Heat 4:
➜ 25 points per book 501 pages - 651+ pages
➜ Bonus 60 points upon completion

I think maybe...? From rules:
