Tammie wrote: "We are close on this round...do we have a page jumping strategy lined up once everyone is done with this one?"Yeah, do we just read anything and try to fit it in? Unless it's a novella or short story, I don't really read books less than 200/250 pages.
Riah - sometimes brainless books are just what the doctor ordered, hehehe. Enjoy!Tammie - So when Event One, Heat One is finished it opens up the rest of the Olympics. I'm thinking we can attack things in this order:
- (finish reading Event One, Heat Two books)
- Round Five, Build a Chariot. This event is required for everyone.
The beauty of Page Jumping is that page count is the only requirement. This means we'll be able to read (nearly) anything our heart desires! So I'm thinking that after people finish Round Five they can claim a slot in Page Jumping. We have 32 slots between Heats One and Two so there's lots of room. :) After that we can start chipping away at the sprints and disc throwing, as well as filling in holes when we see them. When all the main events are filled we open bonus rounds, woo-hoo!
That's the main idea... ideas and thoughts always welcome!
Pragya wrote: "Yeah, do we just read anything and try to fit it in? Unless it's a novella or short story, I don't really read books less than 200/250 pages."There are a lot of spots in each heat, and I'm sure our faster readers won't mind reading some shorter books to fill in holes. :)
Phew, I am tired! My partner wanted to shoot his bow today so we went to a pal's house and somehow got pulled into a HUGE family 4th of July celebration. Met like 50 people and stayed for 3x as long as planned. Busy day, but at least I got some reading in while my parter was shooting. :) While I'm waiting for Heat 1 to be finished, I'll have time to catch up on some graphic novels, woo-hoo!
Riah wrote: " Since the animal has to be a full picture the art of..."Aw. Well, I still think The Art of Racing in the Rain is a good book and hope you find time to read it. I <3 Enzo! (he's the dog, haha)
Morning All. @Brianna - Thanks for the welcome!
@Lory Well Knoxville is not the most exciting city I have lived in but it is obvious you would enjoy McKays on Papermill Drive (It is a huge Used Book Store LOL) and of course there is always the Knoxville Zoo to see the Red Pandas. 8-) . But seriously, the Sunsphere is our biggest attraction and pretty cool and there is always the Woman's Basketball Hall of Fame if you are into sports.
So do we have to claim a spot before hand for page jumping and find a book that fits? or can we offer up a book and have it plugged in? Also do you think we will be done with Event One, Heat 1 by the end of the week? I am going on vacation to the beach next week for a few days and will get a lot of reading done, but I want to make sure I take the right book with me. 8-)
Thanks! Have a great day all, I'm off to work.
Caly wrote: "So do we have to claim a spot before hand for page jumping and find a book that fits? or can we offer up a book and have it plugged in?"I'm thinking we can offer up a book and have it plugged in. There are 32 slots in the first two heats of Page Jumping so I think people will be able to read what they like, at least to start.
I'm updating the spreadsheet right now to make the "what to do when" aspect a little easier to understand - I'll post a note where when I finish. :)
"Also do you think we will be done with Event One, Heat 1 by the end of the week?"
I hope so! Go team go! :D
Sam wrote: "Kazen,I will use that book for Event Five :)"
You got it. :) Good luck with Mr. Lear, there! ;)
Tammie - I asked and
is fine for tools, huzzah! I'll put you down for it in the spreadsheet. Good luck with that last Event One book!
Sorry I haven't checked in but I'm finished with my book. My internet connection is really bad though so I do hop I get to post it in the next couple of hours.Sorry!

If I read the rules correct, we have to finish heat 1 and 2 of page jumping and everyone must finish at least one like the last round...so I suppose we should try to id a date we think we should be finished...we all should focus on that when we are choosing our first book...leaving the 'less page' spots to the end in case someone needs to read a second book and doesn't have time. Don't want to make this harder than it needs to be...I plan to start with a longer book. I personally think it's going to be harder than it looks to find those page ranges. :)
Tammie - I agree, the longer books may be harder to come by!As far as the rules go, each person needs to finish one book each in Event One (underway now), Event Two Page Jumping, and Event Five Chariot. After that there's no individual requirements.
But! In order to move on to bonus rounds the main rounds of all five events need to be completed. I have no idea how fast we'll read or how far we'll get, but I know we're going to try for everything! Hehehe.
I just updated the spreadsheet - I've made the Olympic Planning pages a little easier to understand. Go have a look - hopefully it will make things clearer! (And, needless to say, if it only makes things confusing please let me know.)

Hello everyone!
We've been rocking the reading - there's only a few more books to go before we open up the rest of the Olympic events, huzzah!
Which means... planning time!
FIRST - I've updated and revised our planning spreadsheets. Please go have a look. The "O - Master" page lists general information and our current status as both a team and individually. Most importantly, there's a list of what to do, and in what order. Hopefully this will help keep confusion to a minimum. Of course if you have a question please ask it here!
SECOND - This is on the "O - Master" page (see - handy! ;) , but the next event we're aiming for is Five, Building a Chariot. Rose, Kazen (eep!), Annabeth, Tori, and Ray have yet to claim a task. I know that some of
THIRD - Event Two, Page Jumping, is the last required task. Luckily it's very simple - you just need a book with pages! After finishing your Chariot book let us know what you're reading for Page Jumping. We'll save you a slot for the corresponding number of pages.
LAST - It's a little to early to try and figure out strategy past the required events at the moment, as we don't know how quickly we'll read. We'll see what works best as we go. The spreadsheet is the most up-to-date record of how we're doing, so if you're ever confused about what to read next, check the O - Master page. If the list there doesn't answer your question, ask here and the captains will respond as soon as we are able. There will still be update and goal posts as we go on, of course. :)
Phew, that was a lot to read! Again, if you have any questions let us know, but if you're quiet I'll assume you're reading like the wind! ;)

Thanks Kazen for clarifying...almost done with my book...hopefully everyone is almost there so we can start chariot soon!
Tammie wrote: "Thanks Kazen for clarifying...almost done with my book...hopefully everyone is almost there so we can start chariot soon! "Yup, hopefully it won't be too long!
If you finish your book and would like to start another while you wait you can, just realize that it will NOT be eligible for Olympics. We can bank it towards Wheel instead. I know some people may like the break from reading but others ~waves her own hand wildly~ tend to go crazy if they don't have a read in hand. ;) Options, we haz them!

Usually I'd be itching to read, but I'm grateful for the break so I have more time for traveling around and such. Anybody from/been to Singapore? Anything I should see?
Almost done with my heat two book guys! I'm looking at the 12 letter work title challenge but if all else fails, I'll just read Golden son and one of our colors will be Black.Update: I can either read
by Colleen Hoover (12 character challenge [boy was it a challenge to find a 12 character book)
or
[bookcover:Golden Son|18966819] by Pierce Brown
Just let me know =]
Afternoon All! Kazen thank you so much for update spread sheet. That really helped A LOT. I have a plan in place now 8-) and know how things are going to work.
I will definitely finish my Heat 1 book by tomorrow since I have the day off. Cheers
And if can start the Chariot book by this weekend I will take mine to the beach. I bet I can get 2 books done while I am there 8-) so for page jumping I would like to read
In a Dark, Dark Wood , It has 352 pages so I hope that will help as one of the longer ones?
Off to work on the Time book. Take Care all
Kazen wrote: "Rose, Kazen (eep!), Annabeth, Tori, and Ray have yet to claim a task. I know that some of you us were holding off to see what was needed, but I think we're close enough to go ahead and claim what's left."Okay! I'll grab an 'animal' spot in Chariot with The Star Beast. It has some sort of alien dinosaur on the cover.
His name is Lummox -- he has 6 legs, 2 arms, 4 eyes, and will totally intimidate whatever is pulling the other teams' chariots!
I hope enough of him is showing. Check him out!
Pragya wrote: "Anybody from/been to Singapore? Anything I should see? "..."Hi Pragya, I did a stop-over in Singapore and we went and saw the Marina Bay Sands Hotel - there rooftop views are spectacular.
I think the Botanical Gardens are worth a visit too (we ran out of time so never got to see them).
Hope this helps - though I have probably told you the most common things to do :)
I finished my last book for event 1. Moon Music7
512 pages, Event 1 Heat 2.
This one was definitely not one of my favorites.
Guess next step is to wait until the next event opens! I may look at books for event 3 though, just in case :-)
Finished my book for event 1
Money for Nothing by Donald E. Westlake
336 pages
Task: Event 1 Heat 1: Leg 3-5
Pragya wrote: "Kazen wrote: "Anybody from/been to Singapore? Anything I should see?"It's one of those places that I've been thinking about going to because it's so "close", but I haven't been yet. The only thing I can think of is the infinity pool at the same hotel Caly mentioned... but it turns out it's only for people staying there. :(
...so some help I am. :P
Tori wrote: "Almost done with my heat two book guys! I'm looking at the 12 letter work title challenge..."Maybe Someday is perfect! I'll put you down for that in the spreadsheet... just remember not to start it before we finish heat one! ;)

You guys need to stop reading all these awesome looking urban fantasy series... my poor TBR... ;)
That aside, you're set to go once Heat One is over. ~thumbs up~

Yeaaaa, good news all around! We'll set aside your Page Jumping spot once the Chariot book is done... I don't anticipate any problems fitting it in. :)
Be sure to take an extra book or two with you, just in case - you wouldn't want to be caught with nothing to read! ;) I know that's thinking several books ahead now, but we'll be able to fit it in somewhere, Olympics or Wheel.

I sure hope there's a most impressive chariot award now, we're a shoe in with this guy at the reins! Adding his massive form to the spreadsheet now. :)

Thanks for plowing through even though the book wasn't all that great... I hate it when that happens. :/

Huzzah - great work! We're getting close... only four Heat One books left to go. :D
Kazen wrote: "I sure hope there's a most impressive chariot award now, we're a shoe in with this guy at the reins! Hmm... collage? :D
Kazen wrote: "And we haven't even gotten to the decorations yet! Hehe"I know!! I hope we make it that far. :) It would be fun to have a weird eclecticly decorated chariot.
I had a look at a few other teams' spreadsheets -- if we want to eventually do the bonus Title Relay, the other sheets might be a good source of chains. I saw on one team, 4 different people all read Never Never and chained it all together! Smart. And it's a short book.

True! We must remember though - truly international team here, everyone with access to different sets of books... if something like that worked it's great, but I wouldn't count on it.
Does anyone else put far too many holds in at the library when they are planning what they might want to read for challenges? I'm assuming that not just me....Luckily for our points, it pains me to leave library books unread by the due date, so I just committed to some serious reading time.
Rose wrote: "Does anyone else put far too many holds in at the library when they are planning what they might want to read for challenges? I'm assuming that not just me...."Not just you! And one of my e-libraries just shortened their loan periods from 21 to 14 days... eep....
Kazen wrote: "True! We must remember though - truly international team here, everyone with access to different sets of books... if something like that worked it's great, but I wouldn't count on it."True true. However, there's no requirement for everyone to participate in the bonus round!
My library here is terrible. :( It's got 2 branches and one is tiny. And they suspend everyone's card once a year so you have to go in and reverify your info. They did it to me 1 week after I was there to check out things!! Next time I went online to reserve, it wouldn't work. I had to go there to get the card turned back on. Mean! I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they do any e-librarying either. *pout*
The library in my town is awful too - no e-lending, and not even many seats. You're not even allowed to bring laptops or your own books! They have so few seats available they need to be saved for patrons, I guess, but it's always old guys dozing with a newspaper open in front of them. :P Suspending everyone's card once a year is just mean, though. :/I'm lucky that I still have my library card from back home and access to e-lending... I don't know what I would do without it.
Okay, I found a book for the chariot! Using the color tool
is 64% blue so I'll use that. :) A hold book may come through in the meantime that also works but we'll see how the timing is.Annabeth, last choice is yours! You can do a color book or an animal book - check the spreadsheet for details. :)
Tammie, that's excellent! It looks like you may have shelved two editions - go to "My Books" and on the left hand side a little ways down click on "find duplicates". Once you resolve that and make sure your chosen edition is on both your read shelf (with a date) and your Wobble shelf we should be good to go. :)

I see three fingers! :DKazen wrote: "I'm lucky that I still have my library card from back home and access to e-lending... I don't know what I would do without it."
I went about 4 years with a login (from a friend) to Cornell University's library, including all of their science journals. Oh, it was marvelous! And then it stopped working. Alas.

Good point with Ascension, thank you!
Hmm, I'm going to double check your book's arm in the staff room and get back to you. Regardless, the topic looks super interesting!
Annabeth wrote: "Finished Me Before YouPages : 481

Way to go Annabeth! Claim a Chariot book while you're here - you can go with a cover that's 60% plus an Olympic color (red, blue, yellow, black, green, I think) or something with an animal on the cover. The animal has to be mostly showing (not just a face) and able to pull a chariot (no little birdies, hehe)
