There's something a bit like it in the Jane books. Starting from a DNA sample they can regrow bits of people lost to injury or disease.(Jane) ‘That's fine. Now tell me what happened to Rick.’
(Spence) ‘He's a very fortunate young man, he'd taken an intense blast of high-energy radiation. Mercifully it was electromagnetic, so he wasn't radioactive. He was a nest of cancers, the surgeon said his scans looked like a bucket of mushrooms. They had to do a massive regrow and rebuild job from his original DNA. About ninety percent of him is tissue replacements now.’
‘Ouch!’
‘Exactly. Another month and he'd have been history.’
‘So what was Kelso up to?’
‘It wasn't the weather altering business. He was doing something with a big X-ray laser and showing it off to his backers. I'd dearly love to know what.’

Thinking about it an egg, natural or synthetic, seems a good point to start when growing replacements.
Eggshells take up a lot of space, while the component parts of eggs, the whites, the yolks, are really largely proteins, amino acids and fats. This gives us something to think about when hauling genetic matter across space to regrow. What if we don't need to haul either the chickens or the eggs (which are fragile and prone to break). What if all we need is the DNA itself?Which came first? The chicken or the egg?
NEITHER. Growth medium + DNA strands + Saran Wrap came first :-)
Pretty interesting video, it tripped my missus out watching it!
Okay, not space opera, but this is just too awesome science-y to not share on this forum. A bunch of high school students in Japan figured out a way to hatch eggs without the eggshell.
