The Many Worlds of Albie Bright question

After Albie finds his mum, he climbs back in the box and Dylan the cat jumps in beside him. It says Dylan eats the banana and resets the experiment and that's how they get back home. Can someone please explain how eating the banana reset it and how this got them back because I don't understand how eating the banana made a difference? Thanks!
