Annie Arcane (anniearcane) | 629 comments Hiya everyone! *waves like a weirdo* First of all, I have to say that this group is fan-freakin'-tastic!! *nods enthusiastically* Oodles upon oodles of thanks!!! :D

Sooo, I was getting help with my blurb and Virginia McClain sparked an idea in my crazy brain. I'm hoping y'all will wanna play, or else... *sniffles* ...I'll just have to build this sandcastle all by my lonesome...*sniffles*...tee hee. Okay, here's the Blurbette Challenge...

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?

1. Your blurb
2. Your blurbette (a super duper mini blurb, as short as you can possibly get it)

And because I'm gosh awful at explaining stuff, here's mine:

Title: HART BROKEN

Blurb:

Pint-sized and fiercely independent Mickey Hart is faced with a serious problem.

She has just woken up alone in a luxury penthouse. With nothing but a t-shirt. And no idea who it belongs to.

Enter Cale Windermere. Driven. Ambitious. Successful. And so ridiculously handsome that Mickey wonders if he walked straight out of a romance novel.

So, what’s the problem?

He can’t actually walk. Not to mention, he isn’t who he claims and might even be a serial killer.

But then again, everyone has their secrets…

Blurbette:

Fluffy romance with a paraplegic hero and a touch of angst. Read me.

Hugs,
Ann

P.S. - Yes, Blurbette is now an official term *smirks*

Ben Mariner Love this idea!

Blurb:

Jack Winters is in a bit of a pickle. Things started out just fine. He had a decent job and a few friends. Then he met the woman of his dreams. They go out on a date and things go really well. That’s when things go south. The morning after turns out to be a week later and the world went ahead and ended itself while Jack was far away in dreamland. Now he’s awake in a post-apocalyptic world with no family, no job, and worst of all, no girlfriend. Along with his friends and some other random tag-alongs, Jack will journey cross country to find the woman of his dreams against zombies, heavy metal horsemen, pirates, and a power so immense and evil it will put his very soul to the test.

Blurbette:

90's themed post-apocalyptic road trip...with sarcasm.

When Ben and Joss Beckett are brought in to save a failing business, they don't expect it to be a dangerous assignment. However, they find themselves facing vengeful spirits, sexual perversion, and public servants whose probity is in question.
In a shattering climax, Joss is forced to face down a stone cold killer.

Blurbette:

Pub grub, S&M and poltergeist activity

message 4: by Zoltán (new)

Zoltán (witchhunter) | 267 comments (Sorry, but my blurb is long for now. It is in dire need of some blurbettisation...)

Blurb:

Conley had been a lone witch hunter for centuries. Some events, he mostly erased from his memory, fuel his relentless hatred toward the witches that most of the world considers old tales. His mysterious longevity and immunity to witchcraft allowed him to become a prime predator. He doesn't really live. Just hunts.

During one of these hunts, he finds traces of a witch who apparently slipped away from him for a long time. While investigating and pursuing her, the hunt takes a twist unexpected to both. The witch home world is exposed for the first time while the hunter's motives and past start to crack. Is his goal as pure as he believed it for centuries? Who is she? And why is she so different?

After falling down the rabbit hole, Conley's believes and adaptability receive the ultimate test. Both the world and the new concept is totally alien to him.

Red Shadow is the first book of The Witchhunter trilogy and concentrates on the point of view of Conley. How he finds and faces the unexpected challenges. The book follows the story of the hunter starting from his routine single-goal life. Pressure from past, present and future force him to look at things in a new way, while he also meets the first person who can at least partially understand him.

Blurbette:
Jason Bourne style witch-hunter turns Bear Grylls in Wonderland.

Dawn (dawntice) | 17 comments Writing it haven't completed book but, New Beginnings

Abigail moved from her well known environment in Manhattan. She is working on going to school for pre-law and has left the only family she has ever known to begin anew in a new career in a new town where she knows no one. She has also left behind a mentally unstable ex who has stalked and controlled her and abused her with no real help from those who claim to love her. Her best friend has left and moved to Montana and now is just as good a time as any right to start fresh where she knows no one and can make new friends between her neighbors, co-workers, and fellow classmates. She is in no hurry, in fact she is afraid to be in another relationship with a man and therefore has no plans to do so.

The problem is the first day she meets Hayden and he takes her breath away. Come to find out she did the same for him. He offers to show her around, owns the building she is living in and then after finding where she is working (his attorney's office) has manipulated things to where she is assigned to him to help him on a huge project. She is furious, and is feeling those warning bells, she confronts him determined never to be in a position that she just left, only to find him contrite and completely apologetic. He has also been very accommodating to her and has cleared much of his schedule just to get her settled in and get to know her.

Because she is new and already assigned a high profile client things at work are not looking real good as far as cultivating new friendships. School doesn't start for another month so it seems her focus, and his will be on each other.

Second week in she starts getting threatening notes and in her heart of hearts knows exactly who they are from but doesn't know, or doesn't want to admit he found her. Now she must decide what to about not one man but two. And the decisions are not easy and it seems her new beginnings might not be so bright and filled with hope anymore. Could she really have this much bad luck twice?

Blurbette: Girl meets man on first day in new city. They fall for one another, he past is reading its ugly head. Will this really be a new beginning?

I like this idea. I bet can get mine down really short!

Blurb:
A virtual world perverted.
An ancient threat ignored.
A spunky elf pantsless.

Industry giant Tornado Tech Games has just released their latest masterpiece, the massively multi-player online role playing game Annals of Gentalia. Anders, the plucky elf Night Ranger is pumped to explore its most secret depths.

But things are not always how they seem in the virtual world. When the elf accidentally breaks into the hidden code of the game, his play experience is forever altered. Everyone has to adapt to a game world where the once normal monsters are now charged with sexual energy. Anders ends up setting off on an epic journey to save his own ass.

As the world quickly plummets into chaos around him, a vital question lingers. What kind of video game would willingly release a horde of sex crazed monsters into the world? More importantly to Anders, where can an elf get some pants around here!?

*Warning - Contains sexy M/M scenes and vigorous monster banging.

Blurbette:
Butt Stuff Happens.

Marie Silk | 606 comments So here is my blurb:

Mary Davenport is a 22-year-old idealist who worries that the world in the Progressive Era is leaving her behind. She lives isolated in the Pennsylvania countryside with her affluent and secretive family. When her father dies suddenly, Mary becomes pained with grief and increasingly suspicious of those around her.

A humble servant girl has the chance of a lifetime to become a lady's companion. Costly dresses, exquisite rooms, and fine dinners are pleasant distractions from what is really happening in the house.

Virginia | 142 comments Wow. I love that this got turned into a game. But I must say, I went through all of these posts, only read the blurbettes and felt like I wanted to read all of these books. Not true of the longer blurbs... makes me tempted to change my marketing strategies.

Here's my full length blurb:

Mishi and Taka live each day of their lives with the shadow of death lurking behind them. The struggle to hide the elemental powers that mark the two girls as Kisōshi separates them from the other orphans, yet forges a deep bond between them.

When Mishi is dragged from the orphanage at the age of eight, the girls are unsure if or when they will find each other again. While their powers grow with each season-cycle, the girls must come to terms with their true selves--Mishi as a warrior, Taka as a healer--as they forge separate paths which lead to the same horrifying discovery.

The Rōjū council’s dark secret is one that it has spent centuries killing to keep, and Mishi and Taka know too much. The two young women have overcome desperate odds in a society where their very existence is a crime, but now that they know the Rōjū’s secret they find themselves fighting for much more than their own survival.

And here's the blurbette:

Badass chicks with swords and magic kick a lot of ass and stick it to the man! Talking tree and a dragon also included.

(And can I just say that all of the Butt Stuff Happening in CB's comments has substantially brightened my day?)

Da blurb:
The room in which we gathered, a basement chamber tucked beneath Carver Hall, was as hot as a jungle but possessed none of the splendor. The walls were a soft beige, marred in spots by ink and carbon. There were smudges that seemed to have come from dirt and oil people left while leaning against them. Above us florescent lights buzzed and blinked. The carpet under our chairs and feet was various shades of tan with long dark streaks in the places where people commonly walked. There were no windows, not even in the heavy steel door, painted prison gray. It was in this room, with all the appeal of a gas chamber and all the comfort of a sauna, that we gathered for three hours every Wednesday night of that summer semester, six students and one teacher, reading our tales to one another and discussing the art of writing.

Da blurbette:
Writers being snarky.

Her fears are soon realized when an unknown enemy, intent on revenge, grabs hold of hers, Trent’s and Trent’s unpredictable brother Jensen’s lives and plays puppet master.

A dangerous formula, a well kept secret, love and passion will change the course of three people’s lives more than they would ever have dreamed, or feared, possible.

Blurbette.

Melissa Jensen (kdragon) | 468 comments (This synopsis is still a work in progress and liable to change... at any moment!)

One would think that forced retirement would not be so terribly complicated.
Adeline Moress, former government sorceress to the Emperor, might be less than happy about being banished to the small town of Fensworth in the enchanted woodland known as the Gela Wey, but at least she is getting by. Even with a recalcitrant dragon in human form as her charge.
Issachar, the recalcitrant dragon, is even less happy being stuck with Adeline until Adeline deems him mentally and physically healthy enough to set free. Yet even he can't complain considering the nightmare that had been his life before.
Now someone in their peaceful town has been murdered, and the bodies keep coming. The quiet life both Adeline and Issachar had finally achieved is shattered by a past they had hoped to leave behind, as creatures believed to be long gone creep through the shadows, adding to the death toll. Adeline and Issachar must find a way to save the Gela Wey from history repeating itself, with only the vague hope that they'll come out of their investigation alive.
Magic, murder, mystery – Adeline has the distinct impression this isn't the definition of “retired.”

Blurbette:

She didn't move to a magical forest just to babysit a moody dragon and solve a murder, but that's life for you.

Even smaller Blurbette:

Murder by Magic.

Lauren Garcia (laloga) | 10 comments Oooh, this is fun! :D

Here's mine:

Blurb:

There is balance in all things.

Those who live and breathe magic; those who guard the world against it. Those who heal; those who tear asunder. Those who must choose their paths; those who chose long ago.

The One god shaped the world to exist in perfect harmony...until Seren, the second moon appeared, bringing magic and throwing humanity into chaos. Now, mages are captives, guarded by high walls and highly-trained sentinels, men and women who ingest a dangerous substance to gain an immunity to magic. Only then can they protect the world from the magic-users and abide by their oath: Honor. Service. Sacrifice.

Kali, a crippled mage who longs to run from the painful memories of her deceased father, travels to Whitewater City to meet with a powerful healer. When her sentinel escort is decimated by monstrous bandits, she is left in the company of a single sentinel, Stonewall, a man with nothing left but his chosen name and his faith in the gods. Together, they must survive demonic creatures, bloodthirsty nomads, and a strange magic never seen before.

But trouble brews in Whitewater City. Sentinel Commander Talon struggles to keep the mages captive as Eris, a shape-changing mage, prepares for an escape of her own. Meanwhile, Milo, a new sentinel, must decide if the path he's chosen is the right one after tragedy strikes his squad.

Catalyst Moon: Incursion is an epic fantasy with notes of romance that introduces an old world where magic is new...and rebellion is on the horizon.

Blurbette: A crippled mage and her sentinel captor must work together if they are to survive a harrowing journey across the country. Plus, demons.

The Centre of Experimental Robotics has built Josh, its most lifelike artificial yet. He's supposed to serve as the company's mouthpiece and restore the country's faith in robotics. Unfortunately this prototype of the perfect man likes to think for himself.

One of Josh's first tasks is to get Alfred Wilding, the founder's brother, on side. Alfred is famously difficult, robophobic and won't talk to the press. Yet somehow a relationship blossoms between Josh and Alfred - friendship, then more. Can their love survive in a hostile world?

Blurbette:

Misanthrope falls for robot. Mayhem ensues.

Teresa Smokes (smoksytess) | 5 comments Okay, there's actually some awesome blurbs here that I feel I should share mine, the blurb to my upcoming book.

So here it goes. . .

Blurb

I’m a freak, a human who should be locked away or quarantined for life.

Why? Three reasons.

1) I’m a seventeen-year-old girl who orchestrates trouble everywhere she goes.

2) I have a disease that let me know people’s secrets the instant I touch them, dream disasters up and watch the chaos foreseen in my dream as they unfold.

3) I killed my parents.

My name is Ayana Calhoun, Fair Haven’s most popular kid. As the second daughter of Dan and Esther Calhoun, my life was filled with luxury. Alas, with my grandiosity came some freakiness. Technically, when I turned twelve I developed some unfortunate diseases.

Suddenly, I could read into people, know stuffs about objects merely by touching them, and each time I had a dream, whatever I saw always came true – irrespective of the will, good or bad.

I didn’t know what this meant for years.

Until.

I had a dream where I saw a mysterious guy. A person who only fitted one description . . . Death Personified.

Since my dreams always come true, I knew I’d see him sometime soon. However, I didn’t expect it to be in my house, at 10:30 pm with a dagger in his hand.

Blurbette

A YA urban fantasy deeply sited in Norse mythology with a defiant, sarcastic, smart 17-year-old Ayan as the only solution to mankind's survival from an monstrous Sidh.

So that's it!

Melissa Silvey (msilveywrites) | 14 comments Cold

Blurb:

Meeting gorgeous, rich, and urbane Nikolai Barinov outside of his bar, the most exclusive in New York, isn't fate. It's something darker, and much more dangerous. And although he doesn't know if he can trust me, he can't help falling for me. He would have been better off believing his instincts. He's not who he pretends to be, but what he doesn't know is, neither am I.
Piquing his interest will be the easy part. Seducing him is necessary. But discovering who we both really are might make us realize the hardest truth, our futures were never really our own to begin with.

This is a stand alone contemporary romance, with NO CLIFFHANGER, and a bit of intrigue, secrets, and lies.

This book is intended for adults only, 18+, due to sexual situations and adult language.

*****Please don't reveal any spoilers! Let everyone discover the secrets that lie within Nikolai and Arabella's pasts and future for themselves!*****

Blurbette:

Nothing is as it seems, and don't tell anyone what it really is.

Blurb:

Kyrin is the only person in Alinor without magic. Alone on the city streets, he strives to win fame and escape the shadows—and that means robbing the famous Knights of Alinor.
When Kyrin’s heist goes awry, he stumbles across a witch in the middle of her own crime. She steals the Anchor Key, the artifact protecting Alinor from the magically shifting landscape, and flees—but not before offering Kyrin a place by her side.
To reach her, Kyrin must travel across the shifting landscape of his shattered world.
The Knights are on a witch hunt, too. Determined to save the city, they force Kyrin to join their quest to retrieve what the witch stole.

Saving the city means giving up on his dreams.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments I can try but I'm not too good at it. I mean I cut the blurb to a minimum but it's not funny...so let's see.

Blurb on GR and Amazon:

LX (or Alex for us Earthlings) is a Navigator. From the moment of his birth until he became of age, he prepared for his calling. On a routine exploration mission that shouldn't have taken more than a few months, an incident propels his spaceship light-years away from his destination, leaving him stranded on the third planet from a star called Sol.

The laws of survival are strict; he must not fraternize with the natives. However, an encounter with Mellie changes everything. She has speed and strength unknown to Earthlings yet strangely similar to his own species. This new discovery compels him to learn more about her and those who call themselves vampires. For her, he will break rules, his people's rules, until there is no turning back.

Meanwhile, mysterious storms are devastating cities. When they learn of their origin and the humans fail to see the threat, he, and his new friends, might be their only chance, but to save them and the one he loves, he may have to break his primary Oath: the vow never to take a life.

Short blurb:

After crashing on Earth, an alien enlists the help of vampires to save the planet.

Blurbette: (for those familiar with LX)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Okay, from my oldest publication and consequently my longest and most desperately in need of an update blurb for The Eyes of The Sun:

New Orleans certainly has no shortage of vampire legends and after a few months in the French Quarter, Lucy Soriano was sure she had heard them all. But when a date with a handsome stranger takes a deadly turn, she quickly discovers that the truth is more terrifying than fiction. The real monsters are the creations of evolutionary advantage, not vivid imaginations.

But vampires aren't the only ones with evolution on their side. An anomaly in her blood is found to be fatal to vampires and Lucy is swiftly recruited into shadow organization hell bent on eliminating the vampire problem once and for all. Vampirehunting does not come naturally and Lucy's dangerous improvisations are quickly called out by Andre Garnier, a hunter who makes no secret of the fact that he opposes Lucy's recruitment.

Soon it is discovered that The Eyes of The Sun, the oldest and most dangerous collective of vampires, are once again gaining ground and have infiltrated the very organization that is trying to stop them. The hunters have become the hunted and no one is to be trusted. Lucy and Andre are forced to set aside their differences for the sake of survival, but The Eyes of The Sun have an agenda that no one expected.

Original Blurb: Isaac Tohver is the son of two game industry billionaires, and would never think of being in danger. But he thought wrong. And its unpredictable path has caused it to cross paths with Isaac's jet. When Isaac's jet crashes on an archipelago of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, he must survive and reach the mainland with his sister, Rebecca, and his pilot, Zack, if he wants to escape alive in this action-packed disaster thriller.

Leslie Rutledge came to New York, dreaming of bein an actress on Broadway. Instead, she worked as a waitress and she was not a very gone one at that. She mixed up orders and as a crowning touch, dumped onion soup in the lap of a famous Broadway directer. That was the least of her troubles. She took Adam, an actor as her lover. When she became pregnant, Adam told her he didn't want to get married. He'd landed a starring role on Broadway and he had to think of his career. G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments I love the short blurb, Shirley, even better than the longer one. It's short and to the point. It grabs your attention. Good work. :)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments As a matter of fact, I preferred the short versions for most blurbs.

Aside from the really, really, really short blurbs created for laugh. I mean I love them too but let's be realistic, they wouldn't sell the books, while the shorter ones could and would. :)

Blurb:

A man faces death after an attack, but his life is spared when time travelers Ami and Agatha nurse him back to life. When he awakes in their home he's disoriented and can't remember who he is or what happened. Fearing the unknown attacker, he adventures through time as an escape, but doesn't realize the bigger dangers he's soon to face.

Traveling through time provides a new life, allowing him to make new memories in place of the missing ones. Injustices in different eras begin to define his character, and he wavers between wanting to help others and violent impulses. His personal discoveries, the new sensations, and the exploration of time become his life - the Rain Experience.

Blurbette:

A man with no memory decides he's going to time travel, interfere with people in the timeline with brute force, and see how it all plays out.
