ABANDONED. Book about an enslaved boy, a lion cub, and a girl.

The book starts with a boy, he wakes up in a boat with other children, and they are taken to an island as slaves. I think he works as a blacksmith. I remember he was sent down into the haunted part of the mine with a group of other boys, where spirits make the mine cave-in. The main character escapes a different way than the rest of the boys and he is thought dead. He goes onto a savannah on the island and the next chapter has a lion cub as the main character, she is with her pride when they start getting hunted. Her mother and the cub run into the woods where the lioness dies and the cub wanders off only to get stuck in a log and rescued by the boy. Later they discover the island is volcanic, and about to erupt because of the angry spirits. I don't know much about the girl, I think her name is Lizzie. It was the second book in the series. I read it in 2014 and I don't know the author.
