What's Wrong With This Selfie?

Having never taken a selfie, I have to wonder what is the fascination with posting one's own likeness on the cloud? It's fair to ask...

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) I wish the people who take NO selfies would take one and post it every now and then so I can see how my friends look in their old age, and I wish those who take the billions would cut it out. I'm tired of having to think up alternate responses for, "Don't I look cute?"

The Shed Talking a "selfie" is the single most awful pain I could inflict on myself.

Don't have two heads or a face to scare the world but to me....well let's just say you'll never willingly see me in a photograph let alone in a selfie!

Eva Pasco (evapasco) | 73 comments I remember the preparation for those traditional family photos taken by a professional photographer during holidays and commemorative occasions. There was something appealing about their formality preserved for the ages. While I haven't taken a selfie, I do pester family members from time to time to take casual "author" photos of me.

Paula Houseman (paulahouseman) | 75 comments Selfie doesn't just smack of narcissism, it's a synonym for it.
The many faces of soulless self-absorption captured by a, uh, 'smart' phone, and then appropriately sent up to that place where many have their heads (the clouds ... or their arses)!

I checked my thesaurus and damn if you aren't correct, Paula!

Thanks to all for your comments on my blog .

That's true, Lenita, however does that happen to you 120 times per year? Probably not.

I was just surprised by the inordinately high stats. You have to admit, Google reported some amazingly high numbers!

Lenita Sheridan | 1010 comments You're right--it doesn't. I don't take selfies very often.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 327 comments This is a selfie:

Rembrandt, 1642

So is this:

Van Gogh, 1887

The medium's different, but the impulse is the same. I'll let these gentlemen know they're narcissists next time I run across them.

I've seen both of the original paintings, and I must agree that in that medium, they're magnificent.

While I have no idea how you would work out the logistics of telling these old master artists that they're narcissists, it's likely pointless since they undoubtedly already know.

Including paintings, etchings and drawings, Rembrandt produced nearly 100 self-portraits, although the exact number is still argued.

The Van Gogh Gallery reports that he produced over 30 between the years 1886 and 1889.

In addition, the connection between artists and narcissism has been well studied. Google Scholar has over 31,000 articles on such studies.

These studies have also been very widely reported in the media with such articles as:

Did Rembrandt invent the selfie?

And...

Major Artists Are Also Major Narcissists, Says Science

...and many more.

Any such quirk of the human condition is an appropriate topic for satire.

Thanks for commenting on my blog . Much appreciated.
