message 52: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Thank you both for hours of great listening. I was not surprised when i heard the announcement. I think the podcast has reached its natural end. Good luck to both of you in the future.

message 53: by JenRaye (new)

JenRaye | 11 comments Oh no. I have been listening since very near the beginning , and my TBR/read list is filled with books recommended by Ann and Michael. While I understand the reasoning behind the decision, both having growing families, huge work responsibilities, exhaustion, etc., i will miss the show...and Ann and Michael immensely. Thank you guys for eight years of expanding my reading and listening horizons.

Thanks, Carol,

I had been thinking about it, but that was as far as I got.

That is one reason I posted as I know you are always on top of things and thought I should help out. It won't be the end all but at least will be a start all in one place. Should finish soon.

I also listen to Overdrive's - Professsional Book Nerds. I get a a lot of great recommendations from them too.

Britany | 818 comments I cannot begin to express my sadness reading through these posts. I'm a newbie to this podcast and it was my very favorite one. I savored the episodes and joined this group and follow the blog religiously. I finally felt like I had found a great group of individuals just like me- I'm hoping for surprise episodes every now and again, and can't wait to see the podcast list Carol. (As I will be looking for some new ones...)

Thank You for introducing me to such a wonderful family Michael and Ann.

message 59: by Allison (new)

Allison boozy bookworm (bookgirl1987) | 8 comments I was rather disappointed to hear the sad news that the podcast is coming to an end. I was just getting started with Books on the Nightstand! (I printed out my Summer Bingo card for this year and am going to try to knock out some categories.) I plan to leisurely enjoy the older episodes and am looking forward to the last few ones in the coming weeks. I loved the commentary and the rapport between Ann and Michael. I'm glad for the time I had with the podcast and I hope the Goodreads group doesn't dissolve because I'm not done exploring it yet! Best wishes to Ann and Michael on their continuing book journeys!

message 60: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments If you like science fiction and fantasy, The Sword and Laser is an excellent podcast. I also enjoy Adventures with Words (the hosts are friends of The Readers), Tea or Books, BBC Books and Authors, That Stack of Books with Nancy Pearl, and I just started listening to So Many Damn Books. Of the Book Riot podcasts, Get Booked is my favorite. The Slate Audio Book Club is also good, but you should read the book before listening to the discussion. Completely unrelated to books, the BBC Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo Film Review Podcast is one of my favorites.
I didn't mention The Readers, but I assume that The Book On The Nightstand Community already knows and loves them.

message 61: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 187 comments Of course I will miss having Ann & Michael in my ears on demand. But I absolutely understand that it's time for them to move on and I'm not as upset as many listeners seem to be.

They built a community of readers here that is not going anywhere. When I think of all the honest-to-god-real-in-person friends I've made as a result of BOTNS and it's offshoots - it's pretty incredible. So I can only say THANK YOU Ann & Michael. You have been important in my life in a way that you probably can't even imagine. And I know I'm certainly not alone in that.

Carol, thank you for the suggestion of "What Should I Read Next." I downloaded a few and have enjoyed them. Will be adding that podcast to my regular feed.

message 64: by Britany (new)

Britany | 818 comments Ditto- I am now obsessed with "What Should I Read Next" :)

Thanks!

message 65: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) I certainly understand the need to move on. But I'm super bummed as this was one of my favorite podcasts!! I will miss a the recommendations and insights into the industry.

message 66: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gaylebn) | 118 comments Argh! Just listened last night and I am crushed. But I can understand Michael and Ann's decision and wish them well. I'm secretly hoping that after a pod-cation, they will miss doing it nearly as much as we miss them, and that they will come back with occasional episodes. In the meantime, I have lots of books to catch up on that they have recommended. Best to Michael and Ann!!

message 67: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Groves | 138 comments Other podcasts to try: I subscribe to NPR's Books podcast, which rounds up book-related features from a variety of NPR programs, including Fresh Air, All Things Considered/Morning Edition, Pop Culture Happy Hour, and occasionally something surprising, such as Alt-Latino, a show about Latin American music. Two podcasts featuring librarian Nancy Pearl include That Stack of Books and KUOW-FM: Nancy Pearl. I also listen to the New York Times Book Review podcast the The Guardian (UK) Books podcast. I know there are many more, but I try not to subscribe to too many because I have a hard time keeping with all the podcasts, book-related and not, that I'm signed up for now! I like BOTNS because it's not overly long. I found that I could keep up with it better than some of the hour-long pods, but that's just me.

Thank you from the bottom of out hearts for your years of commitment, recommendations and weekly discussions. Even though you have not personally met many of your listeners we all consider you close friends. For eight years you have come into our homes to visit on a weekly basis - while we are exercising, gardening, driving, or cleaning - to give us the best gift any friend could give. And that is the gift of reading and book recommendations.
Thanks again and best of luck to both of you. I will miss our weekly visits.

Louise | 279 comments I had the pleasure of going to Booktopia in Mississippi a few years ago - and met so many lovely people there :-) It was great fun and I like the idea of all of us listening to the podcast while shopping, walking the dog or driving etc ,and coming here to discuss the books and various topics :-)

Maybe there could be a quarterly issue? (best books of the year/gift guide, Book Bingo, etc)

message 70: by M.A. (new)

M.A. | 8 comments Thank you to Ann and Michael for all they have given me (and a of us) for the last several years. I learned of the Coursera ModPo class/community through their podcast, and it changed my life. All the best to them and gratitude forever.

Cynthia | 20 comments Carol, thanks for letting us know that you compiled your list. Now, I just have to try to fine it!
I am a member of the Bookworms book club , and I am so excited that I already mailed my book. I think I would like to keep the title secret, but I think it would be classified as literary fiction.
Here's to new authors,
Cynthia

message 74: by Jane (new)

Jane (janewholikestocook) | 2 comments I can still hardly believe it, this is one of my favorite podcasts since it started, and easily my favorite book podcast and book blog. Couldn't you maybe just do occasional posts on the website when you read something good? I hate to think about it going away, although I understand. I wish you both the best. You have steered me to many, many terrific books.

Thank you to all for these wonderful, wonderful thoughts.

To clear up any confusion, this Goodreads group is yours -- it will live on as long as you continue to use it. I will try to pop in from time to time and check up on you all :)

message 79: by Rosana (new)

Rosana I just want to thank Ann & Michael for their terrific podcast. I'm a book lover but also an English student and I enjoyed your voices and recommendations. I started listening to you last so I'll go back to start from the beginning. I wish you the best!

Jackielemon | 1 comments I am really going to miss Ann and Michael. BOTN has been my favorite podcast-great voices, recommendations, and every Wednesday I could count on a new episode. I want to thank you for pushing me to stretch my reading out of my comfort zone.
And Ann thank you for the gift of the short story. I am now loving a genre I never tried before. Michael-I may even try a graphic novel or two.

message 87: by Paula (new)

Paula (pm3456) | 1 comments BOTNS is such an awesome podcast, and I'm definitely going to miss it, but as others have said, I can easily understand that there only 24 hours in a day, and it is so hard to find the time to do all that we want. I am so thankful for the podcast archives, I have been listening to all the podcasts that aired before I knew about it. IVe gotten a bunch of wonderful recommendations and have already started going through them. What a wonderful resource! Also wish i could thank the listener who called in the recommendation of The Leisure Seeker. I will never forget that book.

YES!!! I only started listening maybe at the end of last year, so I basically have 300 episodes to reference.

I did that when I first found the podcast about a year and a half ago. I listened to every single episode. I thought they were just as relevant to me as a reader as if I had listened to them when they first came out-and they reminded me of lots of titles I have in the TBR (and on my shelves and in my e-readers!) that I hadn't gotten to yet. I think Ann and Michael did a bang-up job right from the start.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I had about 35 episodes to catch up on when I started.

message 93: by Jen (new)

Jen (bookandcat) | 31 comments Yes! I've been putting all of the episodes into one giant Google Music playlist for myself :-D Have 108 hours so far and counting, and I'm missing about 90 episodes!

message 94: by Frayedknot (new)

Frayedknot Dolly | 4 comments Yes, I've also gone back to the first podcast to start listening from the beginning. I was only able to listen to the farewell episode because I knew there were more (new to me) podcasts, so in essence the series is NOT over. They've done a great job podcasting, and have incentivized me to get back into reading.

message 95: by Laura (new)

Laura | 90 comments I realized over the weekend that I actually did begin to listen in 2008 -- the year it began -- and since I'm such a "completist" I think I must've gone back to Episode 1 and listened. I will probably still listen to them again . . . but was a little sad to realize that there likely won't be any that are new to me. #getoverit ;-)

message 96: by Deb (new)

Deb | 38 comments Ann and Michael ... Thank you for being part of our lives these past years! You are awesome talented people and your weekly voices are already hugely missed. Best to you and your families! Looking forward to an occasional special podcast and postings from you :)

Maybe in a few years there will be a "Return of BOTNS" podcast!

Simon and Thomas ... As my now #1 podcast You have a lot to live up to!
