In The Outsiders by S.e Hinton Ponyboy is a 14 year old boy who is a greaser. He and his gang battle the Socs the high class. Pony and Johnny get jumped and they start to drown Pony, Johnny pulls out his switchblade and kills the soc. They run off to an abandoned church and they accidentally burn it down. The symbolism is the book is the categories that these kids are put in the greasers are the kids from the poor neighborhood who usually wear white tees and slick their hair back. The Socs are the rich kids that have everything and always cruise around trying to find some greasers to beat up. The greasers always carry around a switchblade with them and are always ready to protect themselves at the drop of a hat. The Socs and Greasers get into a huge rumble and they use chains, bats, blades, and anything that could seriously hurt the other people. The conflict in the outsiders is When johnny and pony are getting roughed up by the Socs and one of the Soc punks gets a hold of pony and shoves his head under the water and is gonna drown Pony that's when Johnny pulls out his blade and stabs the Soc and kills him. Johnny and Pony are instantly in a panic so they go to Dally Winston who is the biggest troublemaker of the greasers for help to get them out of town. He leads them to this old abandoned church Johnny and Pony hold fort there for a while until they accidentally leave a cigarette lit and the church goes up in flames. They go back home and they get into a huge brawl with the Socs to settle it all, I love this book it had a super good story that keeps you interested through the whole thing. It has very good ideas about how social classes are super crucial. I would recommend this book to kids in junior high because it's a good read and not to difficult. It is a great book everyone should read.
