I didn't get the ending...How can that woman be Roy's mother? She is african american and the timeline doesn't fit....Wasn't Roy white? He has 'sandy brown hair' and blue eyes...Also...how did some of the cops have cell phone service and take video...? Ending ruined it for me. Otherwise good pulp.

Roy was obviously hallucinating from extreme blood loss and shock. The writer didn’t mean it literally..... the character was just seeing things. This happens a lot.
Also if you had payed attention, the author repeatedly said that service was spotty, not nonexistent. It depended on the area, whether the cell phone towers had been effected, etc. Not *all* cell phone towers were destroyed.
