Madam, want to talk about author Mary Stewart? discussion
New member introductions and group read planning
I still haven't read Madam Will You Talk Tadiana. So many ppl say it's a favorite. I need to do that soon. :-)
Welcome, Sewingdervish. I thought I had read everything she wrote until I came here and found out about Wind Off the Small Isles and The Prince and the Pilgrim. Now I have two new books to discover and I hope to re-read all the others. It will be lovely to have another new member in on the discussions.
I posted on the buddy reads convo, hopefully someone will hold my hand. I don't even know what a buddy read is, but it sounds great.
Buddy reading has been one of the pleasures of Goodreads for me, and this group has done some really fun ones. We all start the book more or less at the same time, and there are threads in the Buddy Reads section of the discussion threads where we chat about what we're reading, and sometimes post pictures of scenes from where the book is set or other interesting trivia. I'll post more instructions and links to the threads when we get close to the start date.

Welcome! You can look back at the various threads for different books from when we read them together, see our different comments, and add your own even if it is a while since they were last active; we love seeing what each of thinks about the books and the issues they raise! I'm also very fond of My Brother Michael but I find it very difficult to choose a favourite Mary Stewart.
Welcome, sewingdervish, I love your name. As you can probably guess from my avatar, I am a quilter. I am pretty new to Goodreads and buddy reads, too, but I am enjoying this group. Nine Coaches Waiting is my favorite Mary Stewart book, thus far. I still have the Merlin series to go.
Hi everyone! I found this group while doing an internet search for 'The Wind off the Small Isles', the only Mary Stewart I haven't read. I discovered her books in my school library way back in the seventies and have been a fan since. It's not easy to pick a favourite but if I had to choose just one, I'd say it was Nine Coaches Waiting. Also love the Arthurian novels especially the first two. So pleased to come across so many readers who appreciate her work!
Hi Everyone! My name is Lori, and my friends here at GR introduced me to Mary Stewart this year. It was pretty much love at first read for me!! I think her writing is incredible. The Crystal Cave was the first book of hers that I read and now I am snapping up her books right and left!! I guess if I have to have an obsession, collecting books by an amazing author is a good one to have! I look forward to chatting about MS and her wonderful books with all of you!!
Welcome, Lori! We try to do a buddy read of one of Mary Stewart's books every two or three months (we're on our second round of her romantic suspense novels). Next up is The Gabriel Hounds in early May.There are also a lot of older discussion threads where we talk about her various books, and you're welcome to check those out if you're interested.
BTW I see from your profile page that you're also a Georgette Heyer fan. There's a very active GH group that some of us here belong to, that you might also be interested in. Here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
Hey Lori!!! Glad you made it over here. This is a fun group. Some very nice people to read with. And we love MS too!!
Thank you so much for the warm welcome!!! I ordered a copy of The Gabriel Hounds so that I would be ready for the group read in May. Isn't life funny?? A year ago, I had no idea that Mary Stewart and Georgette Heyer were destined to be two of my favorite authors! I love GR!!!
Hi Lori! Welcome to the group! I've been reading MS for years, but GH is also a fairly "new" author for me. :)
I just started reading Georgette Heyer now too bc of this group. I had read one of hers maybe 3 years ago. Could be two. I'm in the group mentioned but haven't kept up with it. Checked it out earlier today and found out the current group read is available on kindle unlimited so I got it and have started it. It's good so far!!

The talismans ring is so cute and funny Tadiana. I just had no idea they were funny. I'm enjoying how Sarah is "playing" with Eustacie after they meet. At least that's how I picture it. I may have discovered a new favorite author. This is my second book by GH. The other was a mystery tho. This one is so different. Nice surprise. I think I like the Regency better
Yes, Sarah is good-naturedly teasing Eustacie. She kids around with Tristram even more. I loved them. And I think GH did a far better job writing Regency and Georgian romances than mysteries, though The Talisman Ring is a bit of both, in a farcical kind of way. :)
LOL, yep, farcical is a good way to describe some of the banter. I can't believe how much I am enjoying it. (view spoiler) And I think that will be a very good thing (regarding spoiler)
Hello everyone.I just joined this group because I picked up This RoughMagic in a thrift store - and it took me right back...My mother - never a noticeable novel reader - had all of Mary Stuart’s books. So when I started reading them as a young teenager, she told me that she had know Mary for a few years - I suppose towards the end of WWII in Durham, England. It was before she had written the novels, but my mother knew that she wanted to write children’s books. She has a story that Mary told her about her whirlwind romance with her husband. They were boating on the river, and Mary accidentally on purpose fell in to see if Fred would jump in to save her. He did.
My mum is 95 now. I think she still has a few of the Mary Stuart books in her room, but I don’t know how much she remembers. So I thought I would share this memory here.
Welcome Jill! I just finished TRM. I loved it! Def. my favorite MS book at this time. What an interesting story about your mum. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to reading some MS books along with you. I am also reading the Merlin Trilogy in another group. Outstanding!!! Really enjoying those.
Hi Jill! Welcome! What a wonderful story! I just finished reading TRM with Debbie and it was fantastic! Glad you're part of the group! Hugs to your mum!!!
All, if you're interested in the buddy read of The Gabriel Hounds this month, please pop over to the Buddy Reads thread and speak up. Here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Just introducing myself... Mary Stewart is one of my favorite authors and I just found this group, so am excited to see discussions about her books. I don't think I could narrow down to one favorite title! I have returned to her books often through the years. However if I had to pick the top three, it would be "This Rough Magic", "Nine Coaches Waiting", and "Madam Will You Talk". I started reading M. Stewart in high school, thankfully our (small) local library stocked many of her books. She had incredible talent both with characterization and descriptive scenery! My daughters love her also : ) We have several of her books in paper and many hardcover 'finds' at library book sales! Regards to everyone, Theresa
Hi Theresa, welcome to our group of MS fans! I love your picks for your favorites (those are the same ones I would choose). :DWe usually do a buddy read of one of her books every 2-3 months. The group is on its second round of buddy reads, so we're taking it a little slower now. Right now we're discussing what the next group read should be, over in the buddy reads thread (there's a link in my comment right above yours, #534). So please head on over and put in a plug for whatever you'd like to read in August or September, if you're interested.
There are also lengthy discussion threads on just about every book MS ever wrote. You can find those under the Buddy Reads heading.

Hello! I've been rereading and loving Mary Stewart for fifty years. My first book when I was twelve is still my favorite. Airs Above The Ground.I also love historical mysteries. Elizabeth Peters and CS Harris are especially good.
I live in the US, retiring soon and going home to the hill country in Texas.
Happy to find this group.
Welcome Virginia! I'm delighted you found our group. We have some great buddy reads and discussions in the threads. We generally do a group read every two or three months of one of Stewart's books. My favorites are Nine Coaches Waiting and Madam Will You Talk, but I have a major soft spot for Airs Above the Ground (because Austria! and Lippizaners!)Go over to the "more buddy reads" thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Either add a comment or click on the box to be part of the discussion of what the next buddy read should be and when. :)
Welcome Virginia. Maybe our first Stewart is always our favorite. Mine was Nine Coaches Waiting, and while I love all her work, it still has a special place in my heart. The hill country of Texas sounds intriguing!
