I guess that's what I get for not reading reviews before buying a book. Anyway, I thought that the beginning was abrupt. It jumps right into the conflict without ever getting to know that main character. I feel very disconnected from him. (hide spoiler)]

I'm 35 years old and I am still very uncomfortable with many of these scenes. And I'm not a prude or anything. Maybe it's just the nature of the sexual acts being a result of slavery and sexual abuse instead of consensual. I'm not sure. I do still think that I don't know that main character so that could have something to do with my inner disgust. I don't know. This is just such a hard read for me. (hide spoiler)]

61% (view spoiler)[Well, the political intrigue in this book is definitely tantalizing. I admit that I enjoy that part of the book. It's the other stuff that I am not too crazy about. So Nicaise is the Regent's pet. I didn't really guess that. Though now I suspect that Laurent was perhaps sexually abused by his uncle when he was a boy. It would make sense. The way that Laurent seems to have a soft spot for Nicaise. (hide spoiler)]

I admit that I do want to know what happens next in the story, though I don't think that the book was good enough for me to warrant reading the next one. I probably won't, but we'll see. I am curious to know what is going on in Laurent's head. And heart. He is a tricky one to decipher. I don't really think that any of the other characters had much growth or promise, unfortunately. Not even Damen, who is the main character. -sigh- I wonder if we will see more of Erasmus and his forbidden lover in the next book. I'd love to hear other thoughts on the book. I am curious is anyone else was as baffled as I am about the book. My feelings are skewed, I think. =P (hide spoiler)]
