The winners for June are:

SCI-FI: The Aeronaut's Windlass
The Aeronaut's Windlass (The Cinder Spires, #1) by Jim Butcher

FANTASY: Six of Crows
Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Book discussion may start at ANY point during the month. There will also be 'overall' discussion threads as more members finish the books - anyone can create these!

oh boy If I can find either of these for a decent price I'm in.

I'll try pick up one once I'm back from holidays

So, like, there's this place where you can lay your hands on books. And you get to keep them for a couple of weeks, and there's no charge, dude...

It's called a Library!

Sadly Irish Libraries suck for scifi /fantasy outside of the bigest releases.

My library charges for reservations :(

You can "request" books, if they can't find a copy in their system, most will actually buy a copy.

Well that sucks! Knew there was a good reason for being English!

Maurice | 9 comments So, "The The Aeronaut's Windlass" is already in my 'to read' pile, and I've just put in a reservation on "Six of Crows". At this rate I'll have read both before the month even starts. :-)

The time it would take to get the library to get the book, the month would have passed in most cases. The library where I used to live was great but the one where I am now is very limited.
I've meant to read Jim Butcher for a while so might be my push ow

I dont think the charge here in Ireland though so one advantage over Oxford then :-)

My local library (Northamptonshire) does charge for reservations unless your dyslexic and then its free (one of the only up sides i've ever experienced for being dyslexic).

However, they are terrible at buying new books, even ones that follow on from past series, I'm still waiting for them to get the latest Red Rising series book and asking never speeds this process up. Having said that they do have a good collection of sifi and fantasy so i'm usually ok with older titles.

Aaah! I want to read both but I have a buddy read that month too so I'll probably do Six of Crows. :)

So.. Maurice... Dude like where I live now, there is like no library within like 40 miles...so maybe don't assume I'm a jackass that doesn't know what a library is.

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
I have to rely on the one decent used book sale near where I am which is twice a year and good luck finding either of those books there or the Internet. So if I get lucky and find either of them for a decent price will read them.

message 19: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1464 comments There's a long hold wait at my library too .. older books are easy, but new releases are in high demand. I can hopefully get one of them in time anyway - I placed holds for both.

LittleBookDruid | 89 comments Will have to read a whole trilogy to get to BOTM point. -_-
I am psyched.... Been hearing so many good things about Six of Crows, I have already picked up and am in the middle of Aeranaut, and it is awesome.
Can't wait for the discussions to start. :D

message 22: by Milou (new)

Milou | 101 comments The Aeronaut has been on my tbr for Ever, so will definitely pick it up. And about libraries, mine is kinda decent if you read in dutch, and they do have some english books too cause I live in a student town where a lot of people don't speak dutch. I haven't been there for years though. I used to take books out there at high school, and you pay 20-50 cents per book (which goes on top of the membership price), so I got fed up with them. My brother is dyslexic and he has a membership on a site where you can download audiobooks for free. Needless to say my whole family uses his account :p

message 23: by LittleBookDruid (new)

LittleBookDruid | 89 comments You make me want to have a dyslexic around me. :(
Of course I don't want anyone to have dyslexia, but if one do. Why can't they be one of my friends?

I don't have either of these!

I shall see how I get on. I paused my Harry Potter reading to get through Retribution Falls... So may carry on with that.

I wish I could simultaneously read and concentrate on like 3 books at the same time (I mean literally at the same time) that would blatantly solve all my problems.

Well my goodreads show I am reading around 40 books these days.
But I wish to have that superpowers too. :(
Started Shadow and Bone so I could finish Grisha trilogy before June's BOTM.

message 27: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1689 comments You can read Six of Crows without reading the previous trilogy. It's stands alone. The book group I read it with a few months ago said there's a little more depth if you've read the Grisha trilogy, but it is is not essential.

It's great book, so you all should pick it up if you can.

Somehow I was unable to keep up this month too. Maybe I am too caught up in reading Percy Jackson series. But I still haven't finished any of the three.

Of course, Aeronaut's Windlass was going to be my 3rd Star Lord book, so now i need another for that....

message 32: by Alex (new)

Alex I didn't even bother checking the library, just compared prices at a couple online used book sources and went with the cheaper, should show up in a few days, huzzah for the internet age.
I'd like to shop around at the local stores but where I live everything is 30 minutes away from everything else, and I get one day off a week.

How do you have a queue to borrow an eBook? That seems a silly concept, are they afraid of running out?

message 33: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1464 comments Alex wrote: "How do you have a queue to borrow an eBook? That seems a silly concept, are they afraid of running out? ..."

It has to do with the libraries paying the publisher. They pay for a certain number of copies, and only that many copies can be outstanding. A library user has to return an eBook electronically before another user can check out the eBook. By the way, those copies of eBooks the library buys can be quite expensive because the library's license to lend an eBook copy often expires after being checked out 20 or so times (and has to be purchased by the library all over again)!

An interesting article: https://www.boston.com/news/technolog...

Yeah, I didn't even really check for eBooks on these. Don't get me wrong I do use eBooks and find them convenient, but I prefer print for multiple reasons.

Got both for $24.46 USD which I think's acceptable (with shipping)

Raven I'm also in Canada (near Winnipeg) and absolutely agree. It pisses me off when it's like "oh this book is $10.99" then wait never mind that's American price it's actually $25.00 (may be a little exaggeration, but not much). Video games are the same, anything that's $59.99 stateside is $79.99 here.

My Canadian friends, boy that sucks :(

You're probably aware, but http://www.bookdepository.com does free shipping worldwide. As I'm not in Canada I don't know if the actual prices for the books change, but as its a .co.uk site I assume it just converts it afterwards?

I try to check it semi regularly and stick any good deals on the book deals page.

Six of Crows was ten euro/ 15 Canadian dollars on Book depository.

The trade paper back of Jim Butchers books is 7 euro but not out until July so a bit late

Aeronauts is £8.04 on BD p/back (not available yet) and six of crows is £6.62 on BD for p/back.

Six of crows is £5.59 on Amazon for p/back but not out until June 2nd, kindle is £6.99. Aeronauts is £8.99 for p/back but again not available till July 5th, kindle is £9.99.

I feel your pain, because it the same when converting to euros. Game in the US is as you said 59,99 dollars, but it is also 59,99 euros. But the euro is worth more than the US dollar.

I assume my library has a similar system, but I am not extremely technically literate and never figured it out LOL They do have a partnership with Hoopla however, which allows me a fair selection of audiobooks. However I am limited to 2 checkouts per month (previously 5 per month, a sudden drop this year).

There is some way I can sync this service up to my phone but I can't get it to work LOL 2 per month works fine for me. I put it on while cook/prepare food, clean, shave, etc.

That's great Andrew, except for the drop from 5 to 2 that is. :)

My library system uses Overdrive, which is pretty easy with the Overdrive app on my iPod. Their selection of newer audiobooks isn't too huge though (a bit better with classics) ... but between that, books on CD at the library, and Audible, I manage to pass my long commute.

For newer books (especially newer fantasy/sci-fi), usually Audible is my only bet. But my library system actually happens to have an audiobook on CDs of The Aeronaut's Windlass. Lucky for me!! Now the only question is how long I need to wait in queue for it.
