I've still got a few exams that I'll need to study for but I'll see how much reading I can squeeze in. A few pages is better than nothing anyway! :)

message 59: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments Question. (I know, I ALWAYS interrupt with a question.) I've got some shorter works I'd like to read that don't count toward book challenges, but since these are page-count challenges, could we include published novellas, short stories, etc?

I don't mean short magazine articles. I mean things like these two that are on my TBR list (or read again): Ernest Hemingway's classic The Old Man and the Sea and Oliver Sacks's last work (I think), Gratitude

They're both less than 100 pages, but such good pages!

I've tried but don't like it. Seems I can't focus on both at the same time :(. I either miss the story or mess up my knitting- lol

Em (em-reads) I'm in!

What happens with Kindle books? Do I just say "25% of a 200 page book, therefore 50 pages"?

Em, that's right (I use an online percentage calculator).

Happy readathoning!

Tracey Allen at Carpe Librum (carpelibrum) | 859 comments Hang on, so audio books are ok for a read-a-thon, but reading The Old Man and the Sea, doesn't qualify because it's too short? Doesn't seem right, can the rules be revisited at all?

message 84: by B the BookAddict (last edited May 27, 2016 02:21PM) (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I'm in:)

Not that it matters to me cos I like a big fat book but I don't understand the 125 page rule either. I'm sure if I mulled over it a bit later (it only 7am atm) the reason why will become clear. But Brenda, can you help us out?

Guys as long as the audio book equivalent of hardcover is 125 pages plus, audio books are fine for any of our challenges.

Tracey, your book The Old Man and the Sea has 132pages so it does qualify :)

Brenda | 79974 comments Mod
Thanks Jools..I didn't click on Patty's link above for that book as she said it's under 100 pages. But you're right..it's 132..so to Patty as well as Tracey; that book qualifies :)

message 89: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 86 comments Most other groups say that if your audio book or eBook doesn't give a page number then you take the pages off the 'default' Goodreads physical book. You will need to link to the book whose pages you are using rather than the audio or eBook version you've read.

default book? When you search for a title Goodreads puts one book at the top - that is the default book and is the one whose pages you use.

If the default book has no pages then ask us as there are ways we can find out for you.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Brenda wrote: "Guys as long as the audio book equivalent of hardcover is 125 pages plus, audio books are fine for any of our challenges."

I think that's a good rule, 125 pages is not a lot, otherwise you get lots of loose pages here and there from newspapers and study notes etc which can't be "shown" as "read".

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the rules on all of the challenges ask that you "List and Link" the books you read/have read with at least a star rating for those finished.
This makes perfect sense to me personally as I want to show that I did in fact read said book.

After-all it is about books and having fun reading them ;)

That's right too Jools:) Linking the books and rating them also gives others the chance to add them to their TBRs (good or bad!) and that's a plus IMO :)

message 94: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 631 comments So... are the pages being counted only of books that you start and finish over these 3 days? Or are you counting any number of pages read (whether you start earlier or didn't get to finish on the weekend as long as book has 125+ pages)?

message 95: by Melanie (new)

Melanie I'm in too. I really want to be more active here so am aiming for this read-a-thon and the seasonal challenge.

From 12.01 am Friday to 11.59 pm Sunday Tien. Everything read within that time. So if you're up to page 121 on Thursday night, start counting from page 122 - then stop at whatever page number you get to Sunday night :)
